Andrei Molotiu Thanks! I won't be doing that too often (isn't there a tool in Photoshop I can use),

but there's another piece I need to finish. And keep in mind, these are 7" x 8 1/2". Tiny.

Peter Joseph Schwartz @Warren, if you haven't already you must read the letter in Dangerous

Liaisons where Laclos has Valmont write to Cécile de Volanges on the back of a saucy lady (I forget

who) with whom he's just done the dirty (and will, in a moment, again). It's really a masterpiece of

sustained double entendre. One of the most memorable scenes in the film (for me at least), but

many times better in the novel.

Mephistopheles, so although I haven't read Milton I sort of have?

figure who is used as a character in a novel or other narrative work, you can enter the world of

fiction.

Andrei Molotiu OK, here's an example. I know Harry Mathews. Harry Mathews was best friends

with Georges Perec. The lead character in "A Man Asleep" is based by Perec on himself. A figure

like that in "A Man Asleep" appears in "Life A User's Manual." From there you can connect it to

any of the other figures borrowed by Perec from other books.


Andrei Molotiu Dude, I was being silly. I was referring to "real-world people are fiction too," which

sounds like "there is nothing outside the text." Maybe I should have said "philosophical mumbo-

jumbo"?


Peter Joseph Schwartz Sounds like common sense to me.


Andrei Molotiu OK, how are real-world people fiction? My point is, there are a number of ways

you can make this seem true, using literary theory, but from an empirical standpoint (at least) the

distinction is clear.

how you would make the case that real people are fiction too, especially since you said it seems

like common sense to you.


Peter Joseph Schwartz Real people are fiction in the way they present themselves to other people

and to themselves. If you want theory for that you needn't go much further than Erving Goffman,

though as theory goes that's basically common sense.
