Maica Domnului se bucură
de o cinstire deosebită in Biser-
dumnezei.
Cinstirea acordată Maicii
Domnului se numește hiper-
dulie sau supravenerare, fiind
distinctă de simpla venerare
adusă sfintilor, sfintelor
moaște si a altor lucruri sau
locuri sfințite.
Cinstirea Maicii Domnului
nu umbreste cu nimic pe cea a
Mântuitorului. Având în vedere
ca ea Îl poartă tainic pe Hristos
în ea, întâlnirea cu Feciora Ma-
ria este o întâlnire și cu Hristos.
De aceea nu este întâmplător că
în iconografie ea apare de cele
mai multe ori împreună cu
Hristos.
Trebuie să fim cu luare
aminte la modul în care sunt
încheiate cântările în toate
slujbele, si anume, cu “Slavă
Tatălui si Fiului si Sfântului
Duh” se introduce o cântare
adresata Sfintei Treimi,

C OMMITMENT VS. CONVENIENCE: THE
DORMITION FAST
On Thursday, August 1, 2019,
had begun the observance of the
relatively brief Dormition Fast
that prepares us for the celebra-
tion of the Great Feast of the Dor-
mition of the Mother of God on
August 15. And, as with every
fast, we once again are presented
with a challenge and a choice. In
this instance, the Dormition Fast
presents us with a choice between
“convenience” and “commitment.”
We can choose convenience be-
cause of the simple fact that to fast
is decidedly inconvenient.

It takes planning, vigilance, discipline, self-
denial, and an overall concerted effort. It is
convenient to allow life to flow on at its usual
summer rhythm, which includes searching for
that comfort level of least resistance. To
break our established patterns of living is al-
ways difficult—something we would only con-
template with reluctance. So, one choice is to
do nothing different during the Dormition
Fast—or perhaps just doing something mini-
mal, as a kind of token recognition of our life
in the Church. Such a choice may not yield in
terms of further growth in our life “in Christ.”
It may, rather, mean a missed opportunity.
Yet, the choice remains to embrace the
Dormition Fast, a choice that is decidedly
“counter-cultural” and one that manifests a
conscious commitment to an Orthodox Chris-
tian “way of life.” Such a commitment signi-
fies that we are looking beyond what is con-
venient toward what is meaningful. However,
such a difficult choice has its “rewards,” and
such a commitment will bear fruit in our fam-
ilies and in our parishes. It is a choice that is
determined to seize a good opportunity as at
least a potential tool that leads to spiritual
growth.
Combining the “convenient” with our
“commitment” within our contemporary social
and cultural life is, to some degree, an option.
We often don’t allow the Church to “get in the
way” of our plans and goals, and that may be
hard to avoid in the circumstances and condi-
tions of our present “way of life.” It is hard to
prevail in the never-ending “battle of the cal-
endars.” The surrounding social and cultural
milieu no longer supports our commitment to
Christ and the Church. In fact, it is usually
quite indifferent and it may even be hostile
toward such a commitment.
Though we may hesitate to admit it, we
find it very challenging not to conform to the
world around us. But it is never impossible to
choose our commitment to our Orthodox
Christian way of life over what is merely con-
venient – or simply desired. That may just be
one of those “daily crosses” that the Lord
spoke of – though it may be a stretch to call
that a “cross.” This also entails choices, and
we have to assess these choices with honesty
as we look at all the factors that make up our
lives. In short, it is very difficult – but pro-
foundly rewarding – to practice our Orthodox
Christian Faith today!
The heart of a sincere Orthodox Christian
desires to choose the hard path of commit-
ment over the easy (and rather boring?) path
of convenience. During the Dormition Fast,
we now have the God-given opportunity to es-
cape the summer doldrums that drain our
spiritual energy. With prayer, almsgiving and
fasting, we can renew our tired bodies and
souls.
We can lift up our “drooping hands” in an
attitude of prayer and thanksgiving. The Dor-
mition of the Theotokos has often been called
“Pascha in the summer.” It celebrates the
victory of life over death—or of death as a
translation into the Kingdom of Heaven. The
Dormition Fast is our spiritually vigilant
preparation leading up to that glorious cele-
bration honoring the Mother of God and con-
template our own entrance into the Kingdom
of God.“Behold, now is the acceptable time; be-
hold; now is the day of salvation!” [2Corin6:2].
I wish our community a blessed month
of August when we celebrate the name of
our Church.
PAGE 2 THE BULLETIN WWW.SAINTMARYMN.ORG
că Însuși Dumnezeu-Tatăl a cinstit-o
cinstit-o Sf. Elisabeta, mama Sfăntului
Ioan Botezatorul, care umplându-se de
Duhul Sfânt a grăit Sfintei Fecioare:
"Binecuvântat este rodul pântecelui tău".
Însăsi Sfânta Fecioara a spus despre
sine: "Iată de acum mă vor ferici toate
neamurile", după cum citim în
Evanghelia după Sfântul Ap. Luca (1,
48), pentru că Dumnezeu Cel Preaînalt i-
Dumnezeului nostru". In timpul
acestor cuvinte cântate, are loc
prefacerea pâinii si a vinului în Trupul
si Sângele Mântuitorului nostru Iisus
Hristos. Iar cele dintâi cuvinte rostite
de preot după imnul "Pe Tine Te
lăudăm..." sunt: "Mai ales pentru
Preasfânta, curata,
preabinecuvântata, mărita, stăpâna
noastră, de Dumnezeu Născătoarea si
pururea Fecioara Maria". Iar la
sfârsitul slujbelor, când se face
încheierea, preotul, după ce Îl
pomenește pe Mântuitorul, zicând:
"Hristos, adevăratul Dumnezeul
nostru", spune îndată: "Pentru
rugăciunile Preacuratei Maicii Sale".
În concluzie, noi suntem cinstitori
ai Maicii Domnului pentru că suntem
îndrumați de Sf. Biserică să fim
cinstitori ai ei si avem bucurie din
cinstirea Maicii Domnului.

THE PASTOR SAYS:
Dragii mei mai este inca vara! Va rugam
sa nu uitati de Sf Biserica in timpul verii!
Vacantele / concediile nu dureaza mai
mult de 2 sau 3 saptamani. Fiti prezenti
rugati cand sunteti plecati. Biserica este
locul unde ne inalnim cu Dumnezeu!
Vacanta placuta!
It’s not for money, it’s not for fame,
It’s not for any personal gain.
It’s just for love of fellowman.
It’s just to lend a helping hand.
It’s just to give a tithe of self.
That something you can’t buy with wealth.
It’s not medals won with pride.
It’s for feeling deep inside.
It’s that reward down in your heart.
It’s that feeling that you’ve been a part
Of helping others far and near
That makes you be a volunteer!
If you make a habit of praying for the salvation of others, God will give you an
abundance of spiritual gifts… Prayer for others is very beneficial to the man
himself who prays; it purifies the heart, strengthens faith and hope in God,
and arouses love for God and our neighbor”.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR YOUR HELP and every member’s assistance is needed.
Please contact us if you can help during the weekend of September 7 & 8.
The Romanian Festival is our most important parish annual fundraiser. It is a Romanian-American cultural
event, intended to promote love and appreciation for our cultural and spiritual heritage.
This collective effort makes us aware that the parish is supported by everyone’s joint efforts. For this reason,
we ask you all to help us show our best! Without everyone’s support this cannot be done. One simple way to
assist us is to send a donation to help defray our costs. This way, the joy of a success will be everyone’s.
Thank you and May God Bless You!
