    THE 2520ISAIAH 7 NUMBERTWO

    SIXTY-FIVE YEARS (742BC)Isaiah 7:810

    THE NORTHERN 2520 (THREE YEARS)2 Kings 17:2022

THE BEGINNING723BCAbout two years later, in the seventh year of

Hoshea, Shalmaneser king of Assyria came upagainst Samaria, and besieged it. And at the end ofthree years they took it: even in the sixth year ofHezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king ofIsrael, Samaria was taken. And the king of Assyria

did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them inHalah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and inthe cities of the Medes: because they obeyed notthe voice of the Lord their God, but transgressedhis covenant, and all that Moses the servant of theLord commanded. 2 Kings 18:912.

The destruction that came upon thenorthern kingdom was directly from Godhimself. The Assyrians were merely theinstruments that he used to carry out his purpose.

Through Isaiah, who began to prophesy before thefall of Samaria, the Lord referred to the Assyrianhosts as the rod of mine anger. The staff in theirhand, he said, is mine indignation. Isaiah 10:5.

THE END1798In 1796 Napoleon invaded Italy, defeated the

papal troops and occupied Ancona and Loreto.Pius sued for peace, which was granted atTolentino on the 19th of February1797; but onthe 28th of December of that year, in a riot created

by some Italian and French revolutionists, GeneralDuphot of the French embassy was killed and anew pretext furnished for invasion. GeneralBerthier marched to Rome, entered it unopposedon the 13th of February 1798, and, proclaiming arepublic, demanded of the pope the renunciation ofhis temporal authority. Upon refusal he was taken

prisoner, and on the 20th of February was escorted

from the Vatican to Siena, and thence to the Certisanear Florence. The French declaration of waragainst Tuscany led to his removal by way ofPrama, Piacceza, Turin and Grenoble to the citadel

ended in A.D. 1798, when the papal governmentwas abolished in Rome, when a Roman republicwas again declared there, and the old foundationsof the capital were made again to resound with thecries, if not the spirit, of freedom; and thevenerable ensign, S.P.Q.R., after the lapse offourteen hundred years, again floated in the winds, and when the pope was made a prisoner and wascarried into captivity in France, where he died atValence, August 29, 1799. Faithfully the prophets continued theirwarnings and their exhortations; fearlessly theyspoke to Manasseh and to his people; but themessages were scorned; backsliding Judah wouldnot heed. As an earnest of what would befall the

people should they continue impenitent, the Lordpermitted their king to be captured by a band ofAssyrian soldiers, who bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon, their temporarycapital. This affliction brought the king to hissenses; he besought the Lord his God, andhumbled himself greatly before the God of hisfathers, and prayed unto Him: and He wasentreated of him, and heard his supplication, and

brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord He was God. 2

THE LAST: UNITED STATES1844The Bible declares that before the coming of

the Lord, Satan will work with all power and

signs and lying wonders, and with alldeceivableness of unrighteousness; and they thatreceived not the love of the truth, that they might

be saved, will be left to receive strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11. Not until this condition shall be reached, andthe union of the church with the world shall befully accomplished throughout Christendom, willthe fall of Babylon be complete. The change is aprogressive one, and the perfect fulfillment ofRevelation 14:8 is yet future. The GreatControversy, 389.

And let it be remembered, it is the boast ofRome that she never changes. The principles ofGregory VII and Innocent III are still the principlesof the Roman Catholic Church. And had she butthe power, she would put them in practice with asmuch vigor now as in past centuries. Protestantslittle know what they are doing when they proposeto accept the aid of Rome in the work of Sundayexaltation. While they are bent upon theaccomplishment of their purpose, Rome is aimingto re-establish her power, to recover her lostsupremacy. Let the principle once be established inthe United States that the church may employ orcontrol the power of the state; that religiousobservances may be enforced by secular laws; inshort, that the authority of church and state is todominate the conscience, and the triumph of Rome

in this country is assured.Gods word has given warning of the

impending danger; let this be unheeded, and theProtestant world will learn what the purposes ofRome really are, only when it is too late to escapethe snare. She is silently growing into power. Herdoctrines are exerting their influence in legislativehalls, in the churches, and in the hearts of men. Sheis piling up her lofty and massive structures in thesecret recesses of which her former persecutions

JAMES WHITE1863 (THE END)I will here copy from another testimony written

June 6, 1863: I was shown that our testimony wasstill needed in the church, and that we should laborto save ourselves trials and cares, and that weshould preserve a devotional frame of mind. It isduty for those in the Office to tax their brainsmore, and my husband tax his less. Much time isspent by him upon various matters which confuseand weary his mind, and unfit him for study, orfor writing, and hinder his light from shining intheReview as it should.

I saw that my husbands mind should not becrowded and overtaxed. His mind must have rest, and he be left free to write and attend to matterswhich others cannot do. Those engaged in theOffice can lift from him a great weight of care ifthey would dedicate themselves to God, and feel adeep interest in the work. No selfish feelingsshould exist among those who labor in the Office.

It is the work of God in which they are engaged, and they are accountable to God for the motivesand manner in which this branch of his work is

performed. They are required to discipline theirminds, and to bring their minds to task.Forgetfulness is sin. Many feel that no blameshould be attached to forgetfulness. There is a greatmistake here; and this leads to many blunders, andmuch disorder, and many wrongs. The mind must

be tasked. Things that should be done should notbe forgotten. The mind must be disciplined until it

will remember. My husband has had much care, and he hasdone many things which others ought to havedone, fearing they would, in their heedlessness, make mistakes which would involve losses noteasily remedied. This has been a great perplexityto his mind. Those who labor in the Office shouldlearn. They should study, and practice, andexercise their own brains; for they have this branchof business alone, while my husband has theresponsibility of many departments of the work. If

the workmen make a failure, they should feel thatit rests upon them to repair damages from theirown purses, and not allow the Office to suffer loss

i aceasta i s-a dat deja. n curnd, vom vedea ivom simi care este scopul elementului roman. Toiaceia care vor crede i vor asculta de Cuvntul luiDumnezeu vor strni prin aceasta mustrarea i

    persecuia. Tragedia veacurilor, pag. 581

through their carelessness. They should not ceaseto bear responsibilities, but should try again, avoiding their former mistakes. In this way theywould learn to take that care which the word ofGod ever requires, and then they will do no morethan their duty.

I was shown that my husband should take timeto do those things which his judgment tells him

would preserve his health. He has thought that hemust throw off the burdens and responsibilitieswhich were upon him, and leave the Office, or hismind would become a wreck. I was shown thatwhen the Lord released him from his position, hewould give him just as clear evidence of his releaseas he gave him when he laid the burden of thework upon him. But he has borne too manyburdens, and those laboring with him at theOffice, and his ministering brethren also, have

been too willing that he should bear them. They

have, as a general thing, stood back from bearingburdens and have sympathized with those thatwere murmuring against him, and left my husbandto stand alone while he was bowed down beneathcensure until God has vindicated his own cause. Ifthey had taken their share of the burdens, he wouldhave been relieved.Pamphlets159, 1415.

goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of theMoabites, and Milcom the god of the children ofAmmon, and have not walked in My ways, to dothat which is right in Mine eyes, and to keep Mystatutes and My judgments, as did David. Verse33.

Jeroboam had been further instructed that thekingdom was not to be divided before the close of

Solomons reign. I will not take the wholekingdom out of his hand, the Lord had declared;but I will make him prince all the days of his lifefor David My servants sake, whom I chose,

because he kept My commandments and Mystatutes: but I will take the kingdom out of hisson's hand, and will give it unto thee, even tentribes. Verses 34, 35.

Although Solomon had longed to prepare themind of Rehoboam, his chosen successor, to meetwith wisdom the crisis foretold by the prophet of

God, he had never been able to exert a strongmolding influence for good over the mind of hisson, whose early training had been so grosslyneglected. Rehoboam had received from hismother, an Ammonitess, the stamp ofa vacillatingcharacter. At times he endeavored to serve Godand was granted a measure of prosperity; but hewas not steadfast, and at last he yielded to theinfluences for evil that had surrounded him frominfancy. In the mistakes of Rehoboams life and inhis final apostasy is revealed the fearful result ofSolomons union with idolatrous women.

The tribes had long suffered grievous wrongsunder the oppressive measures of their formerruler. The extravagance of Solomon's reign duringhis apostasy had led him to tax the people heavilyand to require of them much menial service. Before going forward with the coronation of a newruler, the leading men from among the tribesdetermined to ascertain whether or not it was the

purpose of Solomons son to lessen these burdens. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake toRehoboam, saying, Thy father made our yokegrievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat thegrievous servitude of thy father, and his heavyyoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

Desirous of taking counsel with his advisersbefore outlining his policy, Rehoboam answered,Come again unto me after three days. And the

people departed. And King Rehoboam took counsel with the

old men that had stood before Solomon his fatherwhile he yet lived, saying, What counsel give yeme to return answer to this people? And they spake

Chemo, dumnezeul Moabului, i naintea luiMilcom, dumnezeul fiilor lui Amon, i pentru cnu au umblat n cile Mele, ca s pzeasc ce estedrept naintea Mea, i s pzeasc legile i

poruncile Mele, cum a fcut David (1 mprai 11,33).

unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants forever. 2 Chronicles10:37.

Dissatisfied, Rehoboam turned to the youngermen with whom he had associated during his youthand early manhood, and inquired of them, Whatcounsel give ye that we may answer this people,

who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yokewhich thy father did put upon us lighter? 1 Kings12:9. The young men suggested that he deal sternlywith the subjects of his kingdom and make plain tothem that from the very beginning he would brookno interference with his personal wishes.

Flattered by the prospect of exercisingsupreme authority, Rehoboam determined todisregard the counsel of the older men of hisrealm, and to make the younger men his advisers. Thus it came to pass that on the day appointed,

when Jeroboam and all the people came toRehoboam for a statement concerning the policyhe intended to pursue, Rehoboam answered the

people roughly, . . . saying, My father made youryoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my fatheralso chastised you with whips, but I will chastiseyou with scorpions. Verses 1214.

Had Rehoboam and his inexperiencedcounselors understood the divine will concerningIsrael, they would have listened to the request ofthe people for decided reforms in theadministration of the government. But in the hourof opportunity that came to them during themeeting in Shechem, they failed to reason fromcause to effect, and thus forever weakened theirinfluence over a large number of the people. Theirexpressed determination to perpetuate and add tothe oppression introduced during Solomons reignwas in direct conflict with Gods plan for Israel, and gave the people ample occasion to doubt thesincerity of their motives. In this unwise and

unfeeling attempt to exercise power, the king andhis chosen counselors revealed the pride ofposition and authority.

The Lord did not allow Rehoboam to carry outthe policy he had outlined. Among the tribes weremany thousands who had become thoroughlyaroused over the oppressive measures ofSolomons reign, and these now felt that they couldnot do otherwise than rebel against the house ofDavid. When all Israel saw that the kinghearkened not unto them, the people answered the

king, saying, What portion have we in David?neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: toyour tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house,

poporul acesta, dac-i vei primi bine, i dac le veivorbi cu bunvoin, i vor sluji pe vecie. (2Cronici 10, 3-7).

Nemulumit, Roboam s-a ndreptat ctre brbaimai tineri, cu care fusese mpreun n tineree i n

primii ani ai maturitii lui, i i-a ntrebat: Ce msftuii s rspund poporului acestuia care-mivorbete astfel: Uureaz jugul pe care l-a pus

tatl tu peste noi? (1 mprai 12, 9).

David. So Israel departed unto their tents. Verse16.

The breach created by the rash speech ofRehoboam proved irreparable. Thenceforth thetwelve tribes of Israel were divided, the tribes ofJudah and Benjamin composing the lower orsouthern kingdom of Judah, under the rulership ofRehoboam; while the ten northern tribes formed

and maintained a separate government, known asthe kingdom of Israel, with Jeroboam as their ruler. Thus was fulfilled the prediction of the prophetconcerning the rending of the kingdom. Thecause was from the Lord. Verse 15.Prophetsand Kings, 8791.

AARONTHE FIRST HIGH PRIEST (ONLYAFEW DAYS)

Exodus 32:1In the absence of Moses, the judicial authority

had been delegated to Aaron, and a vast crowdgathered about his tent, with the demand, Makeus gods, which shall go before us; for as for thisMoses, the man that brought us up out of the landof Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. Thecloud, they said, that had heretofore led them, nowrested permanently upon the mount; it would nolonger direct their travels. They must have animage in its place; and if, as had been suggested, they should decide to return to Egypt, they would

find favor with the Egyptians by bearing thisimage before them and acknowledging it as theirgod.

Such a crisis demanded a man of firmness, decision, and unflinching courage; one who heldthe honor of God above popular favor, personalsafety, or life itself. But the present leader ofIsrael was not of this character. Aaron feeblyremonstrated with the people, but his wavering andtimidity at the critical moment only rendered themthe more determined. The tumult increased. A

blind, unreasoning frenzy seemed to takepossession of the multitude. There were some whoremained true to their covenant with God, but thegreater part of the people joined in the apostasy. Afew who ventured to denounce the proposed imagemaking as idolatry, were set upon and roughlytreated, and in the confusion and excitement theyfinally lost their lives.

Aaron feared for his own safety; and insteadof nobly standing up for the honor of God, heyielded to the demands of the multitude. His

first act was to direct that the golden earrings becollected from all the people and brought to him, hoping that pride would lead them to refuse such a

made proclamation, Tomorrow is a feast to theLord. The announcement was heralded bytrumpeters from company to company throughoutthe camp. And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peaceofferings; and the people sat down to eat and todrink and rose up to play. Under the pretense ofholding a feast to the Lord, they gave themselvesup to gluttony and licentious reveling.

How often, in our own day, is the love ofpleasure disguised by a form of godliness! A

religion that permits men, while observing the ritesof worship, to devote themselves to selfish orsensual gratification, is as pleasing to themultitudes now as in the days of Israel. And thereare still pliant Aarons, who, while holding

positions of authority in the church, will yield tothe desires of the unconsecrated, and thusencourage them in sin.

Only a few days had passed since theHebrews had made a solemn covenant with Godto obey His voice. judgment; and the knowledge he had gained duringyears of faithful service fitted him to rule withdiscretion. But Jeroboam failed to make God histrust.

Jeroboams greatest fear was that at somefuture time the hearts of his subjects might be wonover by the ruler occupying the throne of David. He reasoned that if the ten tribes should be

permitted to visit often the ancient seat of theJewish monarchy, where the services of the templewere still conducted as in the years of Solomonsreign, many might feel inclined to renew theirallegiance to the government centering atJerusalem. Taking counsel with His advisers,Jeroboam determined by one bold stroke to lessen,so far as possible, the probability of a revolt fromhis rule. He would bring this about by creatingwithin the borders of his newly formed kingdomtwo centers of worship, one at Bethel and the other

at Dan. In these places the ten tribes should beinvited to assemble, instead of at Jerusalem, toworship God.

In arranging this transfer, Jeroboam thought toappeal to the imagination of the Israelites bysetting before them some visible representation tosymbolize the presence of the invisible God.Accordingly he caused to be made two calves ofgold, and these were placed within shrines at theappointed centers of worship. In this effort torepresent the Deity, Jeroboam violated the plaincommand of Jehovah: Thou shalt not make untothee any graven image. . . . Thou shalt not bowdown thyself to them, nor serve them. Exodus20:4, 5.

So strong was Jeroboams desire to keep theten tribes away from Jerusalem that he lost sight ofthe fundamental weakness of his plan. He failed totake into consideration the great peril to which hewas exposing the Israelites by setting before themthe idolatrous symbol of the deity with which their

ancestors had been so familiar during the centuriesof Egyptian bondage. Jeroboams recentresidence in Egypt should have taught him thefolly of placing before the people such heathenrepresentations. But his set purpose of inducing thenorthern tribes to discontinue their annual visits tothe Holy City led him to adopt the most imprudentof measures. It is too much for you to go up toJerusalem, he urged; behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 1Kings 12:28. Thus they were invited to bow down

before the golden images and adopt strange formsof worship. The king tried to persuade the Levites, some

prezena Dumnezeului celui nevzut.

veacuri n robia egiptean. Locuirea recent a luiIeroboam n Egipt ar fi trebuit s-l nvee ct denebunesc era s aeze naintea poporului asemeneareprezentri pgne. SAULTHE FIRST KING1 Samuel 13:114

After Saul had been anointed king of Israel,Samuel the prophet gave him minute directions asto what course he should pursue. He prophesiedthat the Lord would work a change in his heart to

prepare him for the solemn responsibilities of hisnew office. He declared to the king, Thou shaltmeet a company of prophets coming down fromthe high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a

pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shallprophesy; and the Spirit of the Lord will comeupon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, andshalt be turned into another man. . . . And thoushalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold,I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt-offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings. Seven days shalt thou tarry, till Icome to thee, and show thee what thou shalt do.

As Saul journeyed on his way, the change of whichthe prophet had spoken was wrought in him, andGod gave him another heart; and all that Samuelhad said came to pass. The heart of Saul wasturned to the Lord, his mind was enlarged, and hehad the blessing of spiritual understanding. He feltthat the strength of Israel was the Lord God, evenJehovah, and in him he could have courage, fortitude, and resolution to govern wisely. It nowdepended upon Saul to work out the salvation thatGod had wrought within him.

It was not until the second year of his reign thatthe presence of Saul was required at Gilgal. At thattime the Philistines were encamped against theIsraelites. Saul and his followers could see the vasthost that were arrayed against them, and theIsraelites were appalled at the sight of the mightyforces they would have to encounter in battle. Theywere not prepared to meet the enemy, for they wereundisciplined and poorly armed. Signs of theTimes, May 11, 1888.

before Him, and that His blessing might attendtheir efforts to conquer the enemy. But Saul hadgrown restless; and the people, instead of trustingin God for help, were looking to the king whomthey had chosen, to lead and direct them.

Yet the Lord still cared for them and did notgive them up to the disasters that would have comeupon them if the frail arm of flesh had become

their only support. He brought them into closeplaces, that they might be convicted of the folly ofdepending on man, and that they might turn to Himas their only help. The time for the proving ofSaul had come. He was now to show whether ornot he would depend on God and patiently waitaccording to His command, thus revealing himselfas one whom God could trust in trying places asthe ruler of His people, or whether he would bevacillating and unworthy of the sacredresponsibility that had devolved upon him. Wouldthe king whom Israel had chosen, listen to theRuler of all kings? Would he turn the attention ofhis fainthearted soldiers to the One in whom iseverlasting strength and deliverance?

With growing impatience he awaited the arrivalof Samuel and attributed the confusion and distressand desertion of his army to the absence of the

prophet. The appointed time came, but the man of

God did not immediately appear. Gods providencehad detained His servant. But Sauls restless, impulsive spirit would no longer be restrained.Feeling that something must be done to calm thefears of the people, he determined to summon anassembly for religious service, and by sacrificeentreat the divine aid. God had directed that onlythose consecrated to the office should presentsacrifices before Him. But Saul commanded,Bring hither a burnt offering; and, equipped as hewas with armor and weapons of war, he

approached the altar and offered sacrifice beforeGod.And it came to pass, that as soon as he had

Va ndrumael gndul rzboinicilor si descurajai spre Acela lacare este eliberarea i puterea venic?

Vznd c trebuie fcut ceva, i

made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold,Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, thathe might salute him. Samuel saw at once that Saulhad gone contrary to the express directions thathad been given him. The Lord had spoken by His

prophet that at this time He would reveal whatIsrael must do in this crisis. If Saul had fulfilled theconditions upon which divine help was promised,

the Lord would have wrought a marvelousdeliverance for Israel, with the few who were loyalto the king. But Saul was so well satisfied withhimself and his work that he went out to meet the

prophet as one who should be commended ratherthan disapproved.

Samuels countenance was full of anxiety andtrouble; but to his inquiry, What hast thou done?Saul offered excuses for his presumptuous act.He said: I saw that the people were scattered fromme, and that thou camest not within the days

appointed, and that the Philistines gatheredthemselves together at Michmash; therefore said I,The Philistines will come down now upon me toGilgal, and I have not made supplication unto theLord: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burntoffering.

And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast donefoolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment ofthe Lord thy God, which He commanded thee: fornow would the Lord have established thy kingdomupon Israel forever. But now thy kingdom shall notcontinue: the Lord hath sought Him a man afterHis own heart, and the Lord hath commanded himto be captain over His people. . . . And Samuelarose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah ofBenjamin.

Either Israel must cease to be the people ofGod, or the principle upon which the monarchywas founded must be maintained, and the nationmust be governed by a divine power. If Israelwould be wholly the Lords, if the will of the

human and earthly were held in subjection tothe will of God, He would continue to be the Rulerof Israel. So long as the king and the people wouldconduct themselves as subordinate to God, so longHe could be their defense. But in Israel nomonarchy could prosper that did not in all thingsacknowledge the supreme authority of God.

If Saul had shown a regard for the requirementsof God in this time of trial, God could have workedHis will through him. His failure now proved himunfit to be the vicegerent of God to His people. He

would mislead Israel. His will, rather than the willof God, would be the controlling power. If Saulhad been faithful, his kingdom would have been

Samuel, i Saul i-a ieit nainte s-i ureze de bine.

i eu nu m-am rugat Domnului! Atunci amndrznit i am adus arderea de tot.

Atta timp ct mpratul i

PETERMATTHEW 26:3335It was the united testimony of Second Advent

lecturers and papers, when standing on theoriginal faith, that the publication of the chart wasa fulfillment of Habakkuk 2:2, 3. If the chart was asubject of prophecy (and those who deny it leavethe original faith), then it follows that B.C. 457was the year from which to date the 2300 days. Itwas necessary that 1843 should be the first

published time in order that the vision shouldtarry, or that there should be a tarrying time, inwhich the virgin band was to slumber and sleep onthe great subject of time, just before they were to

be aroused by the Midnight Cry. Second AdventReview and Sabbath Herald, Volume I, Number 2,James White.

In infinite wisdom, God chose the foundationstone, and laid it Himself. He called it a surefoundation. The entire world may lay upon it their

burdens and griefs; it can endure them all. With

perfect safety they may build upon it. Christ is atried stone. Those who trust in Him, He neverdisappoints. He has borne every test. He hasendured the pressure of Adams guilt, and the guiltof his posterity, and has come off more thanconqueror of the powers of evil. He has borne the
