It had snowed a lot that night: not heavy snow, but a light, soft snow on top of the hardened grass and soil. The river was still flowing slowly (1) on but by the banks there were traces of ice, pushing out into the river's current. Up river (2), there were small groups of people walking across the crackling, frosted grass. The pond was an arena of movement and colour: dogs chased about on the grass as children slid across the ice and skaters cut their smooth, curving (3) lines across the white glass of the frozen pond. The excited cries of the children mixed with the barking of the dogs and the sounds of those standing watching. Indeed, surrounded by these sounds, some of those on the bank scarcely heard a new sound, a noise which cut through the happy voices of the skaters. At first (4) it was a crack, almost like a shot from a gun, then a slow breaking sound, then a long, fierce crack again. Below the feet of one of the skaters the ice had broken; had split and sent out lightning flashes of cracks across the pond. The activity on the ice changed completely as everyone rushed, slipping and sliding, to reach the bank. Where the ice had broken, a man (5) was already in the water, grabbing at the breaking ice around him. The skater who was nearest moved closer to try and take the man's hand but slipped and fell as the ice cracks spread and the surface gave way beneath him. By now a few people had turned back to try and help the two men in the freezing water. (Carson McCullers, Winter Day)
