 THE POLOVRAGI MONASTERY  The Polovragi Monastery, (district of Gorj) is one of the most importan t religious and artistic monuments which attracts the admiration and the appreciation of the visitors from our country and from abroad. t is located in a pictures!ue setting at the feet of the mountain "Polovra gi #tone$, in the vecinity of the %&T'T& *+ and in the area of Polovragi village. The most recent researches based on two #lavonic inscriptions, establish the  building date of the Pol ovragi Monast ery about --. t is attributed to /ad ul and Patru, 0anciul 1amona2s sons, which are mentioned in a document issued by Prince 3asarab cel T4nar (566758), on 8th 9anuary 58. This document constitues the first documentary attesta tion of the village of Polovragi. The founder of the present church of the Polovragi Monastery is 0anciul P:r:ianu of Milesti, according to the document issued by Prince Matei 3asarab (;<=7 ;-5), on ;th 9uly ;58. >e built the church on the old foundation preserving only the lower part of the inferior walls, which were in a better condition.  ?hen it was finis hed, its founder 0 anciul P:r:ian u dedicated it to the >oly #epulchre. The great voivode @onstantin 3r4ncoveanu (;88765) redeemed it in ;A< and placed it under the jurisdiction of the >ureBi Monastery.  *cces in the monastery is a llowed through a monumenta l gate,carved in oaC in the 8Ds of last century Eth e alley with firtrees lea ds you !uietly to the meeting with God and the peopleDs histor y.The monaster y compleF is in the shape of the fortrees at the center of which is the church$*ssum ption of the irgin$. The church is built in the 3yBantine style on a trefoil plan. ts interior is divided into several sectionsH an ante7nave, a nave and an altar, which are specific of the %rtodoF churches. The painting of the church is particularly importan t both from an iconographic point of view and its technical eFecution. t is liCe of that of the >ureBi Monastery,  being the common worC of the sa me painters , but it has partic ular charac teristics. n the porch, on the east wall one can admire the two iconographic representations, uni!ue in our country, of the monasteries from the Mount *thos, as  well as image s from the two Tes taments and f rom the &ives of t he #aints. The interior painting is preserved in the original form. t is about =- years old and it has a particular artistic value. The colouring on the blue bacCground is harmonious and sober. The iconostasis is a real masterpiece of the old /omanian wood carving. ts rich ornamentation striCes by its finess and brilliancy.

The church is surrounded by the buildings of the Monastery. They date from@onstantin 3r4ncoveanu2s epoch and form a stronghold where there are cells, the worCshop, the refectory and other dependences.

 * real sight for the eyes of pilgrims is both ?est wing due to its arhitectureinspired by "3rancovenesc style$ with arbours and verand adorned with eFtremely beautiful flowers.%n the northern side of the Monastery there is the nfirmary @hurch built in 6<= by *bbot &avrentie. t is in 3yBantine style, and the interior walls arecovered by a delicate painting.

The Polovragi Monastery has a very interesting collection of vestments,epitaphs, icons, crosses, censes, musical manuscripts and religious booCs. >ere we cansee too Prince @onstantin 3r4ncoveanu2s iptych.

Ior its old age,but especially for its present importance in Ceeping the orthodoFfaith of our people,Polovragi Monastery is a privileged place for the researchers ofhistory, culture,peace of mind and religious meditation.
