John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein in Orange Free State. As a child, Tolkien was bitten by a baboon spider in the garden, an event that has influenced later works. Thornton S. Quimby, the doctor who took care of the child after a spider bite, became a model for characters like Gandalf.
