The first woe was to continue from the rise ofMohammedanism until the end of the five months. Then the first woe was to end, and the second to

begin. And when the sixth angel sounded, it wascommanded to take off the restraints which had

been imposed on the nation, by which they wererestricted to the work of tormenting men, and theircommission was enlarged so as to permit them toslay the third part of men. This command camefrom the four horns of the golden altar.

The Four Angels. These were the fourprincipal sultans of which the Ottoman empire wascomposed, located in the country watered by thegreat river Euphrates. These sultans were situatedat Aleppo, Iconium, Damascus, and Bagdad.Previously they had been restrained; but God

commanded, and they were loosed. In the year 1449, John Palaeologus, the Greek

emperor, died, but left no children to inherit histhrone, and Constantine, his brother, succeeded toit.1 But he would not venture to ascend the thronewithout the consent of Amurath, the Turkishsultan. He therefore sent ambassadors to ask hisconsent, and obtained it before he presumed to callhimself sovereign.

Let this historical fact be carefully examined inconnection with the prediction given above. Thiswas not a violent assault made on the Greeks, bywhich their empire was overthrown and theirindependence taken away, but simply a voluntarysurrender of that independence into the hands ofthe Turks. The authority and supremacy of theTurkish power was acknowledged whenConstantine virtually said, I cannot reign unlessyou permit.

The four angels were loosed for an hour, a day,a month, and a year,a to slay the third part of men.

This period, during which Ottoman supremacy wasto exist, amounts to three hundred ninety-one yearsand fifteen days. Thus: A prophetic year is three

    PENTECOSTLevi ticus 23:1521

The Passover was followed by the seven daysfeast of unleavened bread. The first and theseventh day were days of holy convocation, whenno servile work was to be performed. On thesecond day of the feast, the first fruits of the yearsharvest were presented before God. Barley was theearliest grain in Palestine, and at the opening of thefeast it was beginning to ripen. A sheaf of thisgrain was waved by the priest before the altar of

God, as an acknowledgment that all was His. Notuntil this ceremony had been performed was theharvest to be gathered.

Fifty days from the offering of first fruits, camethe Pentecost, called also the feast of harvest andthe feast of weeks. As an expression of gratitudefor the grain prepared as food, two loaves bakedwith leaven were presented before God. ThePentecost occupied but one day, which wasdevoted to religious service. Andye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaimliberty throughout all the land unto all theinhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you;and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.Leviticus 25:9, 10.Patriarchs and Prophets, 533.

PENTECOSTANDTHE JUBILEEBut the time had now come. The Spirit had

been waiting for the crucifixion, resurrection, andascension of Christ. For ten days the disciplesoffered their petitions for the outpouring of theSpirit, and Christ in heaven added His intercession. This was the occasion of His ascension andinauguration, a jubilee in heaven. He hadascended on high, leading captivity captive, andHe now claimed the gift of the Spirit, that Hemight pour it out upon His disciples. Signs of theTimes, December 1, 1898.

FIFTY-TWO DAYSNehemiah 2:11; 6:15On the third night after his arrival Nehemiah

rose at midnight and with a few trustedcompanions went out to view for himself thedesolation of Jerusalem. Mounted on his mule, he

passed from one part of the city to another, surveying the broken-down walls and gates of thecity of his fathers. Painful reflections filled themind of the Jewish patriot as with sorrow-strickenheart he gazed upon the ruined defenses of his

beloved Jerusalem. Memories of Israel's pastgreatness stood out in sharp contrast with theevidences of her humiliation.

In secrecy and silence Nehemiah completed hiscircuit of the walls. The rulers knew not whither Iwent, he declares, or what I did; neither had I asyet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to thenobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the

work. The remainder of the night he spent inprayer; for he knew that the morning would callfor earnest effort to arouse and unite his dispiritedand divided countrymen.

Nehemiah bore a royal commission requiringthe inhabitants to co-operate with him inrebuilding the walls of the city, but he did notdepend upon the exercise of authority. He soughtrather to gain the confidence and sympathy of the

people, knowing that a union of hearts as well asof hands was essential in the great work before

him. When on the morrow he called the peopletogether he presented such arguments as werecalculated to arouse their dormant energies and

n a treia noapte dup sosire, Neemia s-a sculatla miezul nopii i, mpreun cu civa tovari dencredere, a ieit s vad personal ruinele cetiiIerusalimului.

The mighty angel who instructed John was noless a personage than Jesus Christ. Setting Hisright foot on the sea, and His left upon the dryland, shows the part which He is acting in theclosing scenes of the great controversy with Satan. This position denotes His supreme power andauthority over the whole earth. The controversyhad waxed stronger and more determined from age

to age, and will continue to do so, to theconcluding scenes when the masterly working ofthe powers of darkness shall reach their height.Satan, united with evil men, will deceive the wholeworld and the churches who receive not the love ofthe truth. But the mighty angel demands attention. He cries with a loud voice. He is to show the

power and authority of His voice to those whohave united with Satan to oppose the truth.

After these seven thunders uttered their voices,

the injunction comes to John as to Daniel in regardto the little book: Seal up those things which theseven thunders uttered. These relate to futureeventswhich will be disclosed in their order.Daniel shall stand in his lot at the end of the days.John sees the little book unsealed. Then Daniels

prophecies have their proper place in the first, second, and third angels messages to be given tothe world. The unsealing of the little book was themessage in relation to time.

The books of Daniel and the Revelation areone. One is a prophecy, the other a revelation; onea book sealed, the other a book opened. John heardthe mysteries which the thunders uttered, but hewas commanded not to write them.

The special light given to John which wasexpressed in the seven thunders was a delineationof events which would transpire under the firstand second angels messages. It was not best forthe people to know these things, for their faithmust necessarily be tested. In the order of God

most wonderful and advanced truths would beproclaimed. The first and second angels' messageswere to be proclaimed, but no further light was to

be revealed before these messages had done theirspecific work. This is represented by the angelstanding with one foot on the sea, proclaimingwith a most solemn oath that time should be nolonger. The Seventh-day Adventists BibleCommentary, volume 7, 971.

    MANIFESTATION OF GODS GLORY1840THROUGH 1844

The angel who unites in the proclamation ofthe third angels message is to lighten the wholeearth with his glory. A work of world-wide extentand unwonted power is here foretold. The adventmovement of 184044 was a gloriousmanifestation of the power of God; the firstangels message was carried to every missionarystation in the world, and in some countries therewas the greatest religious interest which has been

witnessed in any land since the Reformation of thesixteenth century; but these are to be exceeded bythe mighty movement under the last warning of thethird angel.

The work will be similar to that of the day ofPentecost. As the former rain was given, in theoutpouring of the Holy Spirit at the opening of thegospel, to cause the upspringing of the preciousseed, so the latter rain will be given at its close, for the ripening of the harvest. Then shall weknow, if we follow on to know the Lord; his goingforth is prepared as the morning; and he shall comeunto us as the rain, as the latter and former rainunto the earth. (Hosea 6:3.) Be glad then, yechildren of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God;for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain. (Joel 2:23.) Inthe last days, saith God, I will pour out of mySpirit upon all flesh. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord

shall be saved. (Acts 2:17, 21.)The great work ofthe gospel is not to close with less manifestationof the power of God than marked its opening .The prophecies which were fulfilled in theoutpouring of the former rain at the opening of thegospel, are again to be fulfilled in the latter rain atits close. Here are the times of refreshing towhich the apostle Peter looked forward when hesaid, Repent ye therefore, and be converted, thatyour sins may be blotted out, when the times ofrefreshing shall come from the presence of the

Lord; and he shall send Jesus. (Acts 3:1920.) The Great Controversy, 611.

A TARRYING TIMEHabakkuk 2:3; Isaiah 30:18; Daniel 12:12

Blessed are the eyes which saw the thingsthat were seen in 1843 and 1844.

The message was given. And there should beno delay in repeating the message, for the signs ofthe times are fulfilling; the closing work must be

done. A great work will be done in a short time. Amessage will soon be given by Gods appointmentthat will swell into a loud cry. Then Daniel willstand in his lot, to give his testimony.Manuscript

The parable of the ten virgins of Matthew 25also illustrates the experience of the Adventistpeople. The Great Controversy, 393.

I am often referred to the parable of the tenvirgins, five of whom were wise, and five foolish. This parable has been and will be fulfilled to thevery letter, for it has a special application to thistime, and, like the third angels message, has beenfulfilled and will continue to be present truth tillthe close of time. Review and Herald, August 19,1890.

HAND COVERINGAND REMOVEDI have seen that the 1843 chart was directed by

the hand of the Lord, and that it should not bealtered; that the figures were as He wanted them;that His hand was over and hid a mistake in someof the figures, so that none could see it, until Hishand was removed.Early Writings, 7475.

I saw the people of God joyful in expectation, looking for their Lord. But God designed to prove

them. His hand covered a mistake in thereckoning of the prophetic periods. Those whowere looking for their Lord did not discover thismistake, and the most learned men who opposedthe time also failed to see it. God designed thatHis people should meet with a disappointment. The time passed, and those who had looked with

joyful expectation for their Saviour were sad anddisheartened, while those who had not loved theappearing of Jesus, but embraced the messagethrough fear, were pleased that He did not come at

the time of expectation. Their profession had notaffected the heart and purified the life. Thepassing of the time was well calculated to reveal

such hearts. They were the first to turn andridicule the sorrowful, disappointed ones whoreally loved the appearing of their Saviour. I sawthe wisdom of God in proving His people andgiving them a searching test to discover those whowould shrink and turn back in the hour of trial.

Jesus and all the heavenly host looked withsympathy and love upon those who had with sweet

expectation longed to see Him whom their soulsloved. Angels were hovering around them, tosustain them in the hour of their trial. Those whohad neglected to receive the heavenly messagewere left in darkness, and Gods anger was kindledagainst them, because they would not receive thelight which He had sent them from heaven. Thosefaithful, disappointed ones, who could notunderstand why their Lord did not come, were notleft in darkness. Again they were led to their Biblesto search the prophetic periods. The hand of the

Lord was removed from the figures, and themistake was explained. They saw that theprophetic periods reached to 1844, and that thesame evidence which they had presented toshow that the prophetic periods closed in 1843,proved that they would terminate in 1844. Lightfrom the Word of God shone upon their position, and they discovered a tarrying timeThough it[the vision] tarry, wait for it. In their love forChrists immediate coming, they had overlookedthe tarrying of the vision, which was calculatedto manifest the true waiting ones. Again they hada point of time. Yet I saw that many of them couldnot rise above their severe disappointment to

possess that degree of zeal and energy which hadmarked their faith in 1843.

Satan and his angels triumphed over them, andthose who would not receive the messagecongratulated themselves upon their farseeing

judgment and wisdom in not receiving thedelusion, as they called it. They did not realize that

they were rejecting the counsel of God againstthemselves, and were working in union with Satanand his angels to perplex Gods people, who wereliving out the heaven-sent message.

The believers in this message were oppressedin the churches. For a time, those who would notreceive the message were restrained by fear fromacting out the sentiments of their hearts; but thepassing of the time revealed their true feelings. They wished to silence the testimony which thewaiting ones felt compelled to bear, that the

prophetic periods extended to 1844. Withclearness the believers explained theirmistake andgave the reasons why they expected their Lord in

viaa.

perioadele profetice. Mna Domnului a fostndeprtat de pe cifrele ascunse i greeala afost explicat. Ei au vzut c perioadele profeticeajungeau pn n 1844 i c aceeai dovad pecare o aduseser pentru a arta c perioadeleprofetice se ncheiau n 1843 dovedea c acestease vor termina n 1844. Aveau din nou un puncttemporal fixat. Cu toate acestea, am vzut c mulidintre ei nu puteau trece peste grava lordezamgire i erau incapabili de a avea acel nivelal zelului i energiei care le marcase credina n1843.

Yet the angerof the churches was kindled; they weredetermined not to listen to evidence, and to shutthe testimony out of the churches, so the otherscould not hear it.
