    Romania

The name Romania has linguistic ties with the words Roman and Rome. Indeed, the

Romans did occupy the territory that is now Romania. Even the Romanian language has its

origins in the West, sharing Latin origins with other Romance languages such as Spanish or

French. Romanians trace their heritage to a pre-Roman people, the Dacians, who occupied theirterritory and whose settlements are still being uncovered by archeologists.

Romania is 33% mountains (lovely Carpathians), 33% hills, 33% plain lands.

    Facts about Romania:

Winters are damp with snow and fog, and in the summer you should definitely bring yourumbrella to Romania because the summers have quite some rainy days.

Romanian is the official language, but visitors will also hear Hungarian and German spokenwhile traveling through Romania due to the historic mix of ethnicities that occupied, and stilloccupy, Romania.

Romania is bordered by Bulgaria, Ukraine, Hungary, Moldova, and Serbia and Montenegro.

    Tales/Reality

Prince Vlad ruled Walachia and Transylvania, both part of Romania today. Twice he lost and

reclaimed his throne, once by fighting his own brother, Radu. Although the Vatican once praised

him for defending Christianity, it disapproved of his methods, which soon became infamous. Not many of you heard of Prince Vlad but you may have heard about one of his nicknames: Vlad

the Impaler (Vlad Tepes in Romanian) or DRACULA .

What earned him the Vlad the Impaler nickname was his favorite method of torture, wich was

impaling people and leave them to writhe in agony, often for days. As a warning to others, the

bodies would remain on rods as vultures and blackbirds nibbled the rotting flesh.

During one battle, Dracula retreated into nearby mountains, impaling people as he went. The

Turkish advance was halted because the sultan could not bear the stench from the decaying

    corpses.

Another time, Dracula was reported to have eaten a meal on a table set up outside amidst

hundreds of impaled victims. On occasion he was also reported to have eaten bread dipped inblood.

    Emigration

As you all know, mass emigration from Romania is nothing new. People emigrate from Romania

because of poorness, as in most of the cases in all countries.

But what people dont see is that Romania has lots of potential in every domain. We also have

people who emigrate from Romania to expand their knowledge about certain domains or share

their accomplishmentwith others in other countries who are more interested or just develop the

    idea or project further more.

Top students who excel in one domain are usually pursued by contractors from outside ourcountry to work for them after they finish their studies.

Dispite what everyone thinks about the hapless people in Romania, people here have expensive

cars , use them to go to work , and afford to go on expensive trips on holidays with a salary of

    less than 400 / month .

We havent won any beauty contests such as Miss World or Miss Universe but tourists that come

to Romania usually are amazed by the beauty of the Romanian women.

    For example:

In the 62th edition of the Miss World edition which was held last year on 12 august Romania

    did not even participate.

In the 61th edition the girl who represented Romania only scored 161 points from the Pre-

judging, and those were the only points she gotbecause she didnt continue .

The closest we got to the first spot was in 2006 , when we got in the 1strunner-up for the Miss

World . Ioana Boitor is the name of the model.
