THE BEAUTIFUL DOCHIA

It was said that Decebal had a sister named Dochia. She was so young , courageous and beautiful that when the emperor Traian saw her, he fell in love.

He said to her:“I noticed you Dochia, with what bravery you protected the fortress of Sarmisegetuza. Now that I have defeated your brother Decebal, I have conquered Dacia and the war ended, I want you to come with me to Rome. You will live there in riches and magnificence, in my palace with gilded walls adorned with expensive things.”“Thank you, emperor” said Dochia, “I admire your bravery and kindness, but I cannot go to Rome.”“Why?”“Because I am Decebal’s sister and he took his own life so he would not become your prisoner. No matter how beautiful your castle is, I would still only be just a poor maid and besides there are more beautiful Dacian girls than I am. If you want, accompany them with your Roman soldiers so they can make a new people which will have our boldness and your bravery. But I, on the other side, don’t want to leave this place. I want to be buried here in the holy lands of Dacia. “Traian the emperor listened to her words but when he found out that Dochia took a herd of sheeps and she became a shepherd and that she made it up in the mountains far away, he got infuriated. As a strong and powerful leader he wanted to atleast have Decebal’s sister as an ornament in his Arch of Triumph. So he took a few of his faithful soldiers and started tracking Dochia. He went for days and weeks over the hills and valleys and he barely found her on the top of the mount Ceahlau, with her sheep eating on a beautiful field with thick grass and white, red and blue flowers.

“Dochia, said Traian, this time you won’t escape, I will take you with me!”“No, emperor, I would rather die like my brother Decebal than become a servant.”“I want only what is good for you, Dochia, you are going to live in great riches!”“If you only want what is good for me then leave me here in my country, Dacia.”“Stubborn girl! I will take you by force! I’ll kidnap you!” Then he signaled his soldiers to catch her.Scared, she raised her hands to the sky and chanted: “A statue I shall become so I can remain here in my country.”

In a second the beautiful Dochia, with all her sheep, turned into rocks, stucked in the mountain. The emperor Traian was astonished by what he had witnessed. Then, he said sadly: “There is nothing to do about it; the Dacians love their country as much as they love their mountains, their forests or their rivers. All I can do is listen to Dochia’s piece of advice and bring the Romans to Dacia. Then Traian returned to Rome.Nowadays on the mount Ceahlau people can still see a big rock, like a shepherd, surrounded by white and brown sheep. The Romanians named those rocks: “The Old Dochia and her sheep.”
