odată că intr'adevâr. bătrânul acela trâ-eşte de-prisos.

Intră in casă sâ-.şi aprindă ţigara... Muma lui se întorsese (lela biserică şi povestea cum îşi întâlni pe drum fata plângând fiindcă stăpânul ei o dase a-fară... Şi o certa mereu... Niţă se apro­pie de ele surâzător şi le împacă • ..Nici a.ş<4 n'ar mai fi lăsat-o el de acum îna­inte să tie s lugă "... Spuse acestea cu a las apăsat şi c i oarecare mândrie- —-ştia. el de ce ! — făcând ca toţi trei să privească nedumeriţi la a iâta imnătăte. după. ce. cu o seară mai înainte fusese asa de necă.iil pentrucă liind sfârşitul săptămâni i primise prea puţini bani pentru lucrul Iui.. Dar se mulţumiră să tacă vrând să vadă ce o să mai fie...

Mâncarâ în tăceie . în una din li­r e l e tăceri solemne, premergătoare vre­unei fapte mari... Cuvintele lui Niţă cât şi bună-voia ce a iăta erau atât de ne­înţelese şi neobişnuite încâi nimeni n'a. vea curajul să mai spue ceva. de fricii să nu-i supere... Numai câteodată, îl priveau iscoditori pe sub gene şi bucu­ria iudă murită din sufletele lor ii în­demnau pur'că să-1 îmbrăţişeze şi să-1 s.arute.. Iar el îşi vedea de mâncat , ab­sent, senili şi transfigurat de apropiata fericire.. .

Se sculă de la masă l'ăc.'indmşi cruce ca de-ebicei şi eşi în pragul uşii. ui­ta ndu-se câtva t imp gânditor spre oraş la turlele bisericilor şi acoperisele ca­selor pe care bălaia soarelui le făcea incandescente. . Apoi se iuţise sub co­pac, s ingurul pe care il aveau nu ştiu nici ei de-eâiid, crescut ca din senin subţire, cu crengi puţine şi rare ce dă­deau .i umbră neîndestulătoare.. .

Niţă ar fi vrut să adoarmă numaide­cât pentrucă timpul să treacă mai re­pede.. Dar nu putu... Se pomenea me­reu cu ( chii deschişi fără să privească la n i m i c . Numai prin inimă îi trecea câte un fior ca .atunci când trebuie să săvârşeşti ceva pe care nu l'ai mai fă­cut niciodată... ş i cu toatecă nu vroi de loc să se mai gândească itvi'lo, t ( tuş ceva lăuntric , din adâncul fiinţei lui, îi ţinea trează în nervi fapta... O "ini­ţia umblândti-i prin tot corpul, ne l in i ş . tindu-1. — aşa că ni.a somnul nu se mai putea prinde de el. Chiar şi iarba pe care se culcase parc'ar fi avut prin­tre firele ei ceva necurat, câ-1 făcea să se întoarcă mereu, când pe-o parte când pe a l ta . .

Ca împins de un resort. Niţă sări in picioare... ..Cum de nu se gândise mai demult la asta ? !... li drept că nu crezu­se în aşa ceva niciodată... Dar acum nu strică. . Mama lui ştia aşa de bine să dea în c.aiţi! Auzise el că la toţi câţi le ehi'-jse, li se întâmplase întocmai..." 4 maica-sa nedumerită ii întinse bucu­roasă cărţi le . . \ i ţ â în faţa ei asculta toate câte i le spunea fără să | oală înţelege ceva... EI .aştepta ca fiecare vorbă ros­tită să-i aducă şi pe această cale încre­dinţarea prea bine — ştiuţi- i lui reu­şite . . Dar nu venea... \uzi de-odată cu­vântul ..moaite"... Turcii, prin expansiunea putcrei lor în nordul Dunărei, pe deoparte ca s t se fo­losească de avHUtagiile acestui fluviu în acţiunea lor de pătrundere cât mai adânc în centrul Europei, iar pe de alta pentru ca să poată ţine în tleaproape suprave­ghere de Domnii din Principatele româ­ne, au ocupat principalele schele româ­neşti pe care întârindu-le şi adăogân-du-le şi teritoriul din prejur le-au trans­format în aşa numitele raele -).

Aceste cetăţi străjuiau Principatele ro­mâne delà Orşova până la Hotin.

Comandant al cetaţei era un Paşă. aju­tat de un agă de ieniceri şi un Nazir. administrator general al гаеІеіЗ)

In trecutul nostru istoric politica in­terna, s ituaţia Domnilor precum şi si­guranţa locuiturilor era. în strânsă legă­tură cu gradul de prietenie dintre Domn şi conducătorii acestor cetăţi. *)

„Trei..." ..Cu bine...". Şi înviorat, uşor, iuţi paşii... Mai avea

încă de mers si ar fi vrut să a jungă cu câtva înainte de a se întuneca...

M merse... Slobod, fără să se mai gândească la nimic aşa cum este cine­va care se grăbeşte ca să scape pe al­tul de la o nenorocire. — grăbindu-se cu atât mai mult cu cât acel ce trebuia să fie scăpat era chiar el...

Trecu o stradă, apoi alta. Amândouă destul de lungi... De prin curţi, îl lătra vre-un câine alarmat de trecerea lui fu­goasă sau îi venea înmiresmare de pomi înfloriţi... Într'o curte, observă un domn întiiiănuşat aruncând asupra stra­turilor cu flori din faţa casei Împroş­cări abundente din furtunul umflat ca pneumaticul unei biciclete... Printc'o fe­reastră deschisă, un pian Tn altă parte un copil ţipa plângând... Mai în­colo, un vânzător ambulant de înghe­ţată îşi împingea căruc ioml strigându-si prelung marfa... Niţă îşi încetini mersul... Vă'.u că mai avea încă timp : să nu fie nici mai de­vreme nici mai târziu, aşa după cum hotărîse in planul ce-1 făurise t imp de-aproape o lună de zile şi care trebuia executat cu sfinţenie delà început până la sfârşit...

cii în urma luptei delà Mărtineşti au reuşit să ocupe şi Ţara Homânească. ni s'a păstrat un plan al cetăţii Brăila făcut in 1790. după informaţiun.ile adu­nate de spionii ce se aflau în serviciul austriac.

Planul acesta reprezintă cetatea, lirâi-lei aşa cum se găsea. între anii 1788 1789. t impul uiarei ofensive Huso-Aius-tria.că. şi se păstrează în ..Kriegsarchiv" secţia geografică, din Viena. prezentan-du-se în modul următor : (Fig. 1).

Pivotul cetăţei — Castelul — este în­conjurat cu un zid de formă pătrata cu o s ingură poartă.

Ea colţurile zidului se aflau pa l in bastioane rotunde având câte trei tur­nuri mari.

Năvala gândului se opri... Fii mică se opri si Niţă în loc, la deschizătura unei străzi pe lângă care era să treacă a-proape fără să ştie. fuiat de g â n d . . II opri ceva asemănător curentului rece pe care-1 simţi în dreptul unui gang... El simţi curentul, scurt. în inimă... Ajun­sese.... Privirile i se îndreptară protegui­tor spre casa în care stătea bătrânul răutăcios şi cu bani mulţi... Dar i se păru că acolo vede oprite trăsuri... câ­teva.. JŞi oameni care, se 'mişcau pe-acolo... I se păru...

Niţă se apropie de trăsuri... Intr'ade-vâr trăsurile stăteau ciliar la poarta casei... Iar prin curte şi pe stradă oa­meni...

Un val de mânie făcu să-i svâcnea-scă tâmplele şi sâ i se încleşteze fălcile... ,Ce căutau aici toţi ăştia, astăzi, unde numai el avea dreptul să fie '.'... De ce-i uzurpase acest drept?

Două femei bătrâne văzându-l atât de încruntat se apropiară sfioase de el s pu­nând iui : „Vii prea, târziu băiete... Au dat. tot ce-au avut de dat"... Dar Niţă nu pricepu nimic si le privi lung. Atunci una din ele, l ă m u r i : „Ce spui tu.',, poate el nici nu ştie că nici a muri t uri bătrân alaltâeri şi azi i a u îngropat'. . .

Strada cu lume. cu trăsuri si cu casa cu tot, se învârtiră în jurul lui Niţă... Se propti de gard... Când îi mai trecu, văzu eşind din casă câţiva domni în haine negre... Auzi că acea sunt rudele mortului. — moştenitorii.. . Vorbea, ci­neva la spatele lui... „Au avut. ce lua... Bătrânul era plin de bani . . din ni mulţi."...Că lui Niţă îi veni să-i strige să tacă odată . . Dar nu putu descleşta nici gura..

Un domn în haine negre, cu capul gol, văzându-l 'ii o atât de jalnică pri­vire îl chemă în casă. El nici nu se urni. Femeea de lângă el îl îndemnă : ,,Ci dude dacă 'ti spune... Uite vezi tot ai noroc... a mai rămas ceva şi pentru tine..."

Domnul cel milos, veni chiar el să-i dea în mână lui Niţă o pereche de ghe'e care mai eram încă bune de purtat...

Niţă se smulse furios de lângă, cârd, îngăimă ceva. ile nimeni înţeles şi apoi. fu văzut cum se depărta. încovoiat, cu braţele spânzurând şi aproape înmloti-eindu-se ca un om beat,..

Spaţiul acesta servea numai lor de apărare şi în el se aflau: Iii 1, Magazia cu pulbere : la No. 2sii,l gaziile cu provizii ; la Xo. 3 cazan ienicerilor .şi la No. 5, moscheii. Toti se mai aflau şi trei fântâni.

După această întăritură, la o dist tă nu tocmai mare, se afla o a dom cută dintr'un şanţ şi cu parapet i iarăşi, de formă pătrată cu o poartă ce avea o punte ce se ridici, І0 .şi patru bastioane t ci unghiulare j turnuri

Acestor două infanti l i i cu zid-mănătoare castrelor romane—lei o a treia făcută din şanţ şi pa rapel l jinit cu gard de miele si pari, lat pentaşronală având două porţi: p Xo. 7. numită poarta principală, ii cu punte ce se ridica, a doua Ni poarta [ie care se aducea apă si] se ieşea spre a. se merge la Gbl Xo. 10.

întări tură aceasta deşi mai rudil tară era foarte bine apărată avanii bastioane, trei de formă triunghiul şi două rotunde, unul prevăzut şanţ pentru mine. fiecare din acesta •âte zece tunuri. Tot apărarea mai avea o redută mare, cu sapti nuri si una mică, cu două tunuri poarta principală ; pe laturea despti V'.. o redută cu cinci tunuri, iar ţi de N. E.. una cu două tunuri pi» şi un şanţ pentru mine No. 17,

In spatele acestei întărituri nu se nici o locuinţă locul fiind lăsat I pentru exerciţii, ca şi cel din faţa ei altfel.

Locul pe care au fost aceste trei tărituri, până astăzi poartă mímelt. Cefăţuia şi e în jiartea d* N.E, ai şului Brăila. "~
