 Lesson1 AN INTRODUCTION TO TOURISM

 Tourism is the act of traveling or the purpose of recreation and business, and the provision of services for this act.

 

A more comprehensive definition would be that tourism is a service industry,comprising a number of tangible and intangible components. The tangible elementsinclude:transport system - air, rail, road, water   and hospitality services-accommodation, foods and beverages, tours, souvenirs, and related services such as banking, insurance and safety and security. The intangible elements include:  rest 

and relaxation, culture, adventures and different experiences.

 1.2 Pioneers of tourism Thomas Cook, Freddie Laker and Cesar Manrique.

  Thomas Cook He was the first person to develop mass tourism. He organized excursions and

tours which opened up the world of traveling for pleasure to the middle classes.Many of the things which we now take for granted in modern tourism date back toThomas Cook – things like traveler’s cheques, hotel vouchers, and charteredtransport.

Thomas Cook lived in Leicester in the centre of England in the mid-19 th century.He organized his first tour, a railway excursion from Leicester to Loughborough, in

1841.

Freddie LakerHe was one of the pioneers of modern passenger air travel. He was born in

England in 1922, and from an early age was involved with aircraft. He was anaircraft engineer in the Second World War and also learnt to fly.

Laker’s business ability appeared soon after the war ended. In the Berlin airlift of 1948 he was one of a number of businessmen who bought and chartered planes to

take food and supplies to the people of Berlin when the city was blockaded by theRussian.It was in the 1960s and 1970 that the real growth in charter air travel happened, as

more and more people wanted to go on package holidays. Laker was at the forefrontof this. Freddie Laker helped to make air travel a realistic and fairly cheep possibilityfor many travelers and tourists.

Cesar ManriqueHe was born in Arrecife in 1919 and studied art in Madrid and New York. His

major set-piece visitor attractions, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Rio, and Jardin deCactus are masterpieces of design which are totally in harmony with the landscape.

The hallmarks of any Manrique project are the use of local materials, integrationwith natural, and a completely peaceful atmosphere, all finished with a flourish of hisown brand of surreal art.

Cesar Manrique died in a car accident just outside his Taro de Tahiche home inSeptember 1992.

Air travel troubleOverbookingYou arrive at the airport, pass through security, only to find that your plane is

overbooked. Overbooked means that there are more air tickets sold on a plane thanthere are places available.

CancellationA decision to stop the flight that has already been scheduled. Ex: All flights have

 been cancelled because of bad weather.Unconfirmed flightsIt would seem illogical that once you have booked and paid for your flight, you

have to reconfirm. Certain flights however have to be confirmed either 48 or 72

hours before departure. Check with your travel agent before going.IllnessA surprising number of illnesses, both common diseases such as measles and

chicken pox and more serious ones such as diphtheria or mumps can prevent youflying out. The policies vary from one airline to another so it is better to check withthe airline concerned. They may ask you to produce a medical certificate saying thatyou pose no risk to other passengers or airline staff.

No passportYou are unlikely to be able to travel on an airline if you have forgotten your 

 passport, if it has expired or if you don’t have the right visa. This is because thecompanies can be heavily fined by the immigration department of the country you

are flying to. So do check your documents (particularly the expiry date) before youleave.

Gate closing timeThe closing time varies from one another but the ground staff at the departure gate

can refuse entry if you are too late.

Drunken or disorderly behaviourIt is an offence both to board a plane drunk, and to get drunk on the plane. Theground staff can prevent you from boarding, and the captain has the final decision.Just stick to water.

JokesIn these days of high security flying, a joke about what you have in your baggage

(such a bomb), or saying that you did not pack your own bag, can lead to an arrestand even prosecution. So keep your jokes and good humor to other situations.

  Ticket information- Tickets are available from ticket agents or ports or on the boats (in high season

it is sometimes not possible to buy tickets on board). Tickets prices are regulated bythe government.

The degree of formality of a letter depends on:

- your relationship with the person you are writing to.

The purpose of the letter.- You write formal letters to someone whom you do not know or to whom youare in a subordinate position. The purpose of the letter is usually an impersonal oneor serious one.

- You write informal letters to someone you know well or with whom you are onequal terms. The purpose of writing is, often, personal; it may be light-hearted or itmay be more serious.

- Semi-formal letters fall between these two extremes. They may be to someonemuch older or in a superior position to you but whom you know so well that you canrelax the formality of your writing. They may be to someone whom you do not knowwell but who is the same age and level as you so that an extremely formal letters isinappropriate.
