    Yuri Gagarin started training as a cosmonaut when he was 25. Two years later, in 1961, he

    became the first man to go into space. The name of his spacecraft was Vostok 1. The

    flight lasted 108 minutes. Yuri did not land in the spacecraft. He landed by parachute!

    Sadly, this was the first and the only travelling into space for Yuri. The great Russian hero

    was killed in a plane crash in 1968.
