The Great Kindness Challenge update As you may remember, Hillview Junior High participated in The Great Kindness Challenge from January 28th-February 2nd. During that week students were challenged to complete 50 acts of Kindness. As a result of our participation and all of the amazing acts of kindness shown, Hillview was awarded the 2019 Great Kindness Seal! Great job, Hillview Warriors! We are proud of you!

The Great Kindness Challenge updateAs you may remember, Hillview Junior High participated in The Great Kindness Challenge fromJanuary 28th-February 2nd. 6th and 7th grade elective selection6th and 7th graders who are eligible for an elective next year were give an elective packet onMarch 28th. The back page of the packet should be marked with a 1, 2, and 3 indicating 1st,2nd, and 3rd elective choice, signed by a parent/guardian and turned in to the CounselingO�ce no later than April 5th. The following electives require an application and some requirea teacher recommendation and/or interview: AVID, Leadership, Channel 21, and Yearbook.. Allapplications are also due to the Counseling O�ce no later than April 5th. Applications can bepicked up in the Counseling O�ce if your child did not get it on March 28th. A copy of the packet is attached to the bottom of this newsletter.

Date change for the 3rd quarter AwardsAssemblyWe have changed the date for the 3rd Quarter Awards Assembly. The new date is Wednesday,April 10th. The schedule is listed below and the list of students receiving awards was sent outin a previous email.

8th grade opportunity to travel to Japan!8th graders have an opportunity to go on an all-expenses paid trip to Pittsburg's sister city inShimonseki, Japan in August, 2019! If selected, they will travel with a group representingPittsburg Uni�ed School District and the City of Pittsburg. Please �nd the �yer withinformation about the trip attached at the bottom of this newsletter. Applications are availablein the main o�ce and due no later than 4 p.m. on May 1st.

Summertime learning opportunitiesThere are several district summertime programs and community summer learning programsthat we'd like to share with you. 1. Your 6th and 7th grade child should have brought home the Summer Math Instituteapplication. These applications were passed out by their math teacher in mid-March. This is agreat program taught by PUSD teachers on the Los Medanos College Campus and is focusedon helping students gain skills in math. Applications are due to the Main O�ce at Hillview byApril 10th, but apps are time and date stamped so the families that turn theirs in �rst will have�rst priority. Please �nd copies of the application attached at the bottom of this newsletter inEnglish and Spanish. 2. Letters were mailed home from the school district about our Summer Learning Programthat will take place at Hillview from June 10-June 28. The letter includes a tear-off section foryou to �ll out to share that you are interested in having your child participate. Make sure toturn in the tear-off section to Ms. Desiree in the Main O�ce at Hillvew before April 12th. 2. Reading Program sponsored by Cal State East Bay for all Grades - note that this is aprogram that charges quite a bit of money, but can de�nitely help your child in grades K-12.See the �yer below for details and registration information. We also have hard copies of this�yer in the Counseling O�ce. 3. DVC College for Kids is a great program that offers many different types of classes. Thisprogram also has a fee (around $70 per course) and takes place on the DVC campus inPleasant Hill. Registration opens on April 9th and classes �ll up quickly. Check it out at this

Games students have been playingStudents at Hillview have been playing some unacceptable games lately. One game is calledthe "Bad Girls Game." Students have been playing this and "play �ghting." The other game is the"Dare Game." This is a game where boys have been challenging each other to go up to girlsand slap them on the butt. Please have conversations with your children about these gamesand let them know that students will be disciplined if we �nd that they have been playing them.

Uniform issues are continuingPlease check your child(ren) before they come to school to make sure they are in properuniform: blue twill pants (not jeans) or skirt, white collared shirt, and id card. Please alsocheck their backpacks to see if they have an extra set of clothes in there. Several studentshave been coming to school and changing at lunch or changing into free dress when they getto school. Please help us out!

Remind is a way to stay connectedRemind is a way for us to send you quick text messages. Most of our teachers use Remind,too, to send homework assignments and other information to parents. Teachers will sharetheir Remind information at Back to School Night. The Counseling Department information isas follows: On your cell phone please go to your text messages and type 81010 in the space where youwould normally put the phone number.
