PRIVATE/PUBLIC GOODS

Club goods (also artificially scarce goods) are a type ofgoodineconomics, sometimes classified as asubtype ofpublic goodsthat areexcludablebutnon-rivalrous, at least until reaching a pointwherecongestionoccurs. These goods are often provided by anatural monopoly. Club goodshaveartificial scarcity. Club theory is the area of economics which studies these goods. Examples of club

goods include privategolf courses,cinemas,cable television, access tocopyrightedworks, and the servicesprovided by social or religiousclubsto their members. TheEUis also treated as a club good.

Common goods are defined ineconomicsasgoodswhich arerivalrousandnon-excludable. Thus, they

constitute one of the four main types of the most common typology of goods based on the criteria:

whether the consumption of a good by one person precludes its consumption by another person(rivalrousness)

whether it is possible to exclude a person from consumption of the goods (excludability)Wild fishare an example of common goods. They arenon-excludable, as it is impossible to prevent peoplefrom catching fish. They are, however,rivalous, as the same fish cannot be caught more than once.

Ineconomics, a public good is agoodthat is bothnon-excludableandnon-rivalrousin that individualscannot be effectively excluded from use and where use by one individual does not reduce availability toothers. Examples of public goods includefresh air,knowledge,lighthouses, national defense, flood controlsystems andstreet lighting. Public goods that are available everywhere are sometimes referred to asglobalpublic goods. Afireworks displayis a public good because it is non-excludable (impossible to preventpeople from using it) and non-rivalrous (one individual's use does not reduce availability to others).

A private good is defined ineconomicsas "an item that yields positive benefits to people" thatisexcludable, i.e. its owners can exerciseprivate property rights, preventing those who have not paid for itfrom using the good or consuming its benefits; andrivalrous, i.e. consumption by one necessarily preventsthat of another. A private good, as an economic resource isscarce, which can cause competition for it. Themarket demand curve for a private good is a horizontal summation of individual demand curves.Thesecheesesare private goods. They arerivalous, as the same piece of cheese can only be consumedonce. They are alsoexcludable, as it is well possible to prevent someone from consuming the cheese -simply by denying to sell it to them.
