Nafiunea şi literatura engleză prezintă în Oamenii şi Operele sale nu numai culmi neîntrecute dar şi originalităţi fără seamăn.

Un exemplu impresionant este şi acest Robert Louis Steuenson, poate pufin cunoscut la noi, care merită, chiar dacă interesul nostru nu'l exige, să fie mai mult decât luat în seamă.

Din „viafa" lui frumos romanţată de autorul reputat ale viefei lui Goethe, redăm cât spafiul ne-o îngădue, dorind s'o vedem integral tra­dusă împreună cu scrierile lui principale.

P R I M I I P A Ş I I N L U M E

Cu un sac de călătorie în spate, s im­plu, prea s implu îmbrăcat, pornise prin Franţa. In apropiere de un sat, un jan­darm îl opri şi-1 duse la comisariat . Cu greu isbuti să-i convingă pe poliţişti că este un călător de plăcere, şi nu un spion german (era prin 1875) . Fanny ple­case de acolo într'o localitate până. unde trebuia să meargă călare, drum care era să-1 coste viaţa Ia câţi .va paşi de aceia pentru «are părăsise „ lumea veche'' şi străbătuse jumătate pământul . Primirea ce i se făcu îl compensa de toate neca­zurile şi oboselile şi în acel r.ră.şeV Montterey, Stevenson pentru o trăi, şi nu a t â t pentru el cât pentru noua sa familie, începu să scrie şi să-şi ofere scrisul la toate publicaţiunile americane. Parveni să câştige patru dolari pe săp­t ă m â n ă din care nu mânca decât ju­mătate, adică odată pe zi !

îl fermecară. Dar o mică răceală, muti­ca excesivă şi sărcia. îl Irántira la pat. Tuberculoza se declară alarmantă. F a n n y fu îngerul salvator şi tot ea. scrise în numeie lui la Edimbourg în Scoţia ob­ţinând împăcarea lui cu părinţii. Scă­pând de primejdia boalei şi din ghiarele mizeriei, luară împreună drumul An­gliei unde erau aşteptaţi .şi unde fură primiţi părinteşte.

I N L U P T Ă C U B O A L A

Climatul AnyHei şi atmosfera de care fugise, îi făceau rău. Medicii îl trimiserâ Ia Davos în Elveţia unde în adevăr reuşi să învingă pentru mal multă vreme a-meninţarea ofticei. Acolo st imulat de soţia sa, întrevâ/.u şi hotărî construirea unui far în l i teratura patriei lui, care avea să lumineze generaţii . începu să scrie adevărata literatură care impre­sionează profund si astăzi sute de mii de cititori. Marele lui succes , ,Insula Bogăţiei" fu comparată ou Odissea ! Scrise şi versuri foarte frumoase.

Reîntors în Anglia boala reapăru, sân­gele îl podidea uner.ri în doze mari. tu­şea îl împiedica să lucreze, şi se visa undeva departe, pe altă lume. Cruntă boală, teribilă luptă împotriva, ravagii­lor ei. Tatăl său, cucerit de consacrarea generală şi de opera fiului său, îi alese o reşedinjă (ideală pentru Scoţia Totuşi cum venia iarna, nu rezista nici acolo. Dar scrise în acel loc . .Straniul caz al doctorului Jakyll şi al d-lui Hyde", s im­bolul celor două părţi opuse ale spiritu­lui u m a n în genere, care făcu mult zgo­mot ani în şir. In primele şease luni se vândură 40000 exemplare

Jules Verne şi Rider Haggard erau depăşiţi. Stilul, ideile, concepţia o r i g i ­nală ,planul larg. erau ale lui şl totul impresiona profund. Boala lui însă nu-1 lăsa în pace. F a n n y suferea de nostal­gia Californiei şi astfel într'o bună zi vândură tot ce era al lor în Anglia si Scoţia, lăsară mormântul tatălui lui înflorit şi cu m a m a . soţia, şi copiii ei. părăsiră pentru totdeauna pământul na­tal.

Pr imirea ce i se făcu Ia New -Yi rk fu neaşteptată' Un prieten mobilizase in port toată lumea publicistică. Ziarele mari îi făcură oferte princiare, rugân-tlu-1 să primească zeci de mii de dolari pe colaborări săptămânale regulate. Fu o r a ră satisfacţie pentru mediocritatea de care acuza Anglia.
