─ COPULATIVE PREDICATION - Status of the verb to be
- The predicative – syntactic and logico-semantic classifications
─ INTRANSITIVE PREDICATIONS:
- simple intransitive verbs (unaccusatives and unergatives)
- intransitive verbs with indirect or prepositional object;
- complex intransitives (“phrasal verbs”) with adverbial particle and/or preposition;
- relational intransitives (verbs of possession, reciprocal verbs);
- intransitives with adverbials.

Historicist readings of the play. Plot and characters. Similarities in point of theme with A
Midsummer Night’s Dream (fathers and daughters, essence and appearance, manipulation through
illusion). Marginal characters in the play.
William Shakespeare – A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Critical interpretation. Shakespeare’s
fictional geography. Women’s role in a patriarchal society. Similarities with The Tempest. Plot and
characters. Marginal characters in the play.
William Shakespeare – Twelfth Night and As You Like It as high romantic comedies. Similarities
and differences between the two comedies in terms of plot development, types of characters, comic
situation.
John Webster – The Duchess of Malfi. Proto-Gothic and horror. Why is the Duchess considered
Hamlet’s feminine counterpart and the greatest female character of all English Renaissance drama?
Compare Bosola to Hamlet and Malvolio.
George Bernard Shaw – The Devil’s Disciple. Context and social background of the play. Themes,
plot and characters.

The historical context of each novel (rise of bourgeois, industrialization, the Victorian age,
modernism, post-world War I, the development of technology, the decline of the South, the world
of academics etc.). The plot as synthesis among character, action and thought. Narrative techniques
and narrative speed: telling, showing, ellipsis. Types of narrators Point of view. Time and space in
the novel (duration, localization, setting, flash-back, road novels, travel novels etc.) The difference
between story and plot. Characterization. The themes of the aforementioned novels. Types of novel:
traditional, Gothic, Bildungsroman, utopia, campus novels.

The students are to prepare the text analysis of the aforementioned poems, referring to: poetic
genre, theme(s), key words, critical approach chosen for analysis, figures of speech, types of
images, the stylistic dominant of the analyzed poem, elements of prosody (strophic structure, meter,
line, rhythm, rhyming pattern).
