Classification and destination of merchant
vessels
Until the 20th Century, ships generally, were all-purpose cargo vessels, with very
little specialization. All cargoes were carried in general purpose holds, or on deck. Modern commercial vessels are
designed and built to carry specific cargo types.
A cargo ship is a sort of ship or vessel that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. Cargo ships are usually specially designed for the task, often being equipped with cranes and other mechanisms to load and unload, and come in all sizes.
A reefer ship is a type of ship typically used to transport perishable commodities which require temperature-controlled transportation, mostly fruits, meat, fish, vegetables, dairy products and other foodstuffs.
Semi-submerging heavy lift ship capable of lifting another ship out of the water and transporting it to its destination.
Heavy lift ship equipped with a crane specialized in lifting heavy loads.
Container ships are cargo ships that carry all of their load in truck-size intermodal containers,
in a technique called containerization.
The acronym ROPAX (roll on/roll off passenger)
describes a RORO vessel built for freight vehicle transport
along with passenger accommodation.
Car-carrier – is a type of RO-RO ship designed to carry automobiles on multiple decks.
The ConRo vessel is a hybrid between a RORO and a container
ship. This type of vessel has a below-decks area used for vehicle storage while stacking containers
on the top decks.
BACO (Barge Container Ship) - vessels that carry both conventional shipping containers, and barges that are loaded through doors in the bow.
SEABEE ship load barges by a 2,000-ton-capacity submersible stern elevator.
Lighter aboard ship (LASH) – a ship that carries unpowered barges (lighters) ,which are loaded using a large gantry crane.
A bulk carrier, bulk freighter, or bulker is a merchant ship specially designed to transport unpackaged bulk cargo, such as grains, coal, ore, cereals, cement in its cargo holds

A cruise ship or cruise liner is a passenger ship used for pleasure voyages, where the voyage itself and the ship's amenities are part of the experience, as well as the different destinations along the way. Transportation is not the prime purpose, as cruise ships operate mostly on routes that return passengers to their originating port, so the ports of call are usually in a specified region of a continent.
An ocean liner is a ship designed to transport people from one seaport to another along regular long-distance maritime routes according to a schedule. Liners may also carry cargo or mail, and may sometimes be used for other purposes
A ferry (or ferryboat) is a boat or ship used to carry (or ferry) primarily passengers, and sometimes vehicles and cargo as well, across a body of water. Most ferries operate on regular, frequent, return services.
A livestock carrier, as the name suggests, is a large ship used in the live export of sheep, cattle and goats. They are specially built new or converted from container ships.
