Then he put two cups near the kettle and sat down. - This time Nikki, he said without looking at her but at the pouring tea, you have to drink some tea. Here! and he pushed the mug toward her. Then he started to warm his hands on his cup turning it slowly between his palms. - Thank you Calum. This is very good, said Nikki while sitting down in front of him. She started to take small sips and went on staring and trying to catch his eye. In the end he gave up. - What ? - We can not be too late Calum you have to promise you let me do the things. - What things? - All the things today, tomorrow we will see. But today you have to promise me Calum. - OK, I promise. - All you have to do is to repeat what I say no matter who comes even if there are people you know. - What people? - People that will tend to your mother. - She is your mother too Nikki. - No she is not. - Let's go home, said Nikki suddenly, pulling at his hand. The boy followed her in complete silence. They got into the house and went into the kitchen feeling no impulse to take a second look at the dead

woman. As if nothing actually happened Calum went about to build the fire and put the kettle for tea.Nikki watched him closely to catch any slight indication of his emotions. She didn't sit and she didn't say anything until he was ready with the kettle settled on the wooden cut-ting board on the table. A pleasant fragrant mist was arising in the cold air from the hot tea.Calum moved around with the same handiness as usual. He didn't mind Nikki at all as she was waiting for him standing in the door frame staring at him all thetime.

Actually, somehow, he seemed pleased and at peace. Then he put two cups near the kettle and sat down.- This time Nikki, he said without looking at her but at the pouring tea, you have to drink some tea. Here! and he pushed the mug toward her. Then he started to warm his hands on his cup turning it

slowly between his palms.- Thank you Calum. This is very good, said Nikki while sitting down in front of him.She started to take small sips and went on staring and trying to catch his eye.In the end he gave up.

- What ?- We can not be too late Calum you have to promise you let me do the things.- What things?- All the things today, tomorrow we will see. But today you have to promise me Calum.- OK, I promise.- All you have to do is to repeat what I say no matter who comes even if there are people you know.- What people?

- People that will tend to your mother.- She is your mother too Nikki.- No she is not. Only on the papers. You know Calum, mother is the one who keeps you at her breast. You have to trust me.- I trust you.- I changed the story with the real one.Calum looked a bit puzzled but than he shook his head as to clear his thoughts.- That is the right thing, I killed her.

 – Listen, just listen to what I say , nobody killer her, it has been just an accident. You know thisvery well. Nothing happened , you think you hit her but that was not the cause of her fall. Shewas very sick.

The boy didn't say a word. He sat there looking deep into his tea. Nikki went on:

 – And she was very shocked by the news I gave her so her heart gave up and she fainted whenshe saw you, when she realized you heard it all so she fell and she hit the table but she wasalready dead by then. It has been too much for her. I am sorry.

Calum sank in his chair and his eyes filled with tears.- Listen to me you did not touch her , I saw it all remember? I was there in the room....with her.....- I .... but his voice broke when he saw Nikki's tense look.- No, you did not, you wanted to, you raised your hand but I saw her eyes in agony when she realizedI was telling the truth and you were there to hear it. She was dying before you raised your hand. I amnot making this up Calum.

The boy did not answer , it looked as if it was very hard for him to remember and to be sure.He was struggling.

 – When we got back home from the shore, remember? Asked Nikki as she reached over the ta-ble to hold his hand for a brief moment, she was so weak she couldn't get up from her chair tocome see you were safe. She was half dead Calum, she couldn't even raise her voice to callfor you, and she was worried sick about you. she was dying while I was talking to her. I guessthis is our only crime, that we wanted to leave...

Nikki let go off his hand which he didn't move at all and straightened in her chair.- So now I am going to call the police.she added abruptly.- OK.- You promised you won't say a word unless I said it before.- I know.- Do you feel tired? Do you feel scared?

- Yes.- No, you are not scared you are just tired and sad. But you are Fair Apple, remember?- I am very sad. If they take me away you come and see me, right Nikki?- Nobody will take you away if you trust me.Nikki picked up the phone.

- This is an emergency. We just came in from a walk and we found Mrs.Lovage dead on the floor. No,we did not touch anything.- Why did you say that? asked Calum surprised.- To keep things simpler. You promised to trust me. You are her son you are supposed to be confuseddon't worry about a thing, beside she is already in Heaven and she watches over you to be well andsafe.- How can she be in Heaven when she abandoned you?- She never thought she did, she left me in good hands with her mother.- I need to know.....- You will know it all soon enough but first we have to do things right. The Police agent and 2 other people came over in less then 20 minutesNikki told them Mrs. Lovage felt very ill for the last 4 days or so but she refused to see

a doctor. They said they knew she was very ill.- And who knows , added Nikki when she saw nobody was willing to ask them for further details.

Maybe the shocked caused her to come to such a sudden end.- what shock?Nikki just handed him the thick file with the documents about her birth and life. The man read it all in silence as his face grew darker and darker.- I am sorry about this, said he and put the papers on the table. Did she invite you here?- Yes she did after I called her from London, but it was very hard for her. You see, her mother , mygrand mother told her, convinced her, I was dead when I was only ten months old.- God what a story, said one of the other men and Calum gave him such a hard look that he immedi-ately apologized.

Meantime the coroner declared everything was clear and they took the body to the car.- We will let you know after the autopsy for the funeral.- We are deeply sorry muttered them while taking off.Now the house was empty and peaceful. The tea was cold but they filled again their cups in silence.

 – They.... started Calum after a while as if talking in a dream.- Yes Calum they have seen right away it has been a normal death. I told you she is already inHeaven watching over you. She mistreated you in a way but it was from too much love. I just realizedhow much she loved us both. To make a cake for your dead daughter every year , year after year, for so many years and to have a special locked room for her and all those candles this is a huge love.

- I am very sad Nikki, I need to go out now.- Go Calum, and don't be too sad, I believe she is happy now to see us here together.- I don't know Nikki. I really don't...

After the boy left, Nikki relaxed and went to her room to smoke a cigarette.'' Poor woman, she thought, I had no special feeling for her no matter how hard I tried to recognize alink between us, maybe she was not my mother after all, maybe all these papers following a child canget mixed with somebody else's papers. I don't even want to be Calum's sister because.... but these

papers gave me a right to be here and to ask for Calum's custody if they think he can not fend for him-self. I need to be here with him , sister or not. This is my place. This is where Lizzy and Fair Applelived happily ever after. Now I am worried sick about Calum but I will never tell him to come home un-less he wanted to.I don't want to sound anything like his mother. I want him to feel free as a bird. As a cormorant....''She managed to go to sleep without waiting to hear him coming back.

When she opened her eyes the gray light of the sky couldn't tell her the time.'' Yesterday everything seemed so clear'' she thought realizing she kind of felt at a loss. ''When in dan-ger of murder I managed to stay pretty sharp and now look at it my mind is blurry...''

–I made some breakfast Nikki shouted Calum knocking at her door in the hallway unexpectedlyand giving her quite a start.

 – Fine, just gimme a sec.She could hear him going back to the kitchen in a sprint pace. ''Who knows? Maybe she is

watching from Heaven. I know I would”On the cooking stove the water was boiling for tea.It was nicely warm and it smelled all over of fresh toast and scrambled eggs.

 - I didn't ask you Nikki, maybe you wanted some coffee. We have coffee.

The boy placed a plate with eggs and toast in front of her.

 – No, thank you , tea is good.Nikki followed him with her eyes as he brought butter and jam to the table. He seemed fairly well and

composed. She saw the fresh bread on the counter'' he must have bought it early''For a while they ate in silence and they could hear the thunders in the distance and the crackle of thefire.

 – You will stay here with me now won't you Nikki? Or you still want to go to themain land?

 – I had it all planned for the main land but now everything changed. We haveto wait. For a while.

The silence shrouded them again. The jam was very tasty. ''Who is going to make jam from nowon?'' thought Nikki and she suddenly felt very tired and worried. ''What if I didn't come ? She'd bedead and him all alone here, what gave me the idea he needs a tutor?, I may be completely wrong heseems to know very well how to handle his life...''

 –

Shall I call you Susan from now ?asked Calum giving her a restless look.. – You know what Calum ? Your mother knew it better. Susan is gone, gone

for ever.

 – But you said....

 – It's just a bunch of papers, you saw it. What if somebody made an error, what if they gave me a wrong file? You can not keep somebody alive withsome stamps. She didn't recognized me , remember? Not even after I toldher. There was no reaction from the boy as if he didn't hear any of she said.- Do you want to know for sure Calum? do you want me to take a test?

 – Why? what difference does it make?

 –  As I have said to make sure.

 – Nothing is for sure Nikki, not even death. I don't want you to take a test.He didn't give her time to make an answer for he pushed his chair away and started to clean the tableShe could tell he was suddenly upset. It's pretty hard to walk with steady pace on the thin line between the worlds.

-Do you want me to do the dishes Nikki?

 – No, I can manage, but there is no rush is it? And she felt rather taken aback

 – I need to go now said the boy getting his coat from the peg.

 – Listen, I want you to be ok, shall I cook something for the rest of the day?

 – I am ok, I'll bring some cheese and some eggs from the farm, I promised tohelp there , we can cook when I come.

 – I almost forgot, do we need to notify anyone?

 – No it's already posted.

 – Posted?

 – You know when an islander dies they put a big announcement at the post

office, everybody finds out. – What about relatives?

 – You are not afraid to be here alone are you Nikki? She suddenly smiled getting near the sink.

 – What shall I do if the little men come?

 – They never leave the forest answered Calum not noticing her smile.''Here I am washing dishes and getting ready to cook in the poor woman's house.

It feels like she never existed. Calum is right why would we care about the main land when in truthnothing is for sure and nothing exists and the little men managed long ago to turn everything intodust.”When she opened the refrigerator she was surprised to see a lot of fresh vegetables. Bell peppers andegg plants, tomatoes and zucchini, onion and cabbage. No meat no cold cuts.

After she finished in the kitchen she started to explore the house. She had never been upstairs. She took a quick look of the hallway and the 3 rooms and the smallbathroom without stepping inside. It didn't feel right for Calum since he was the master of the housenow. She may ask for permission later.

When she retired to her room she left the door ajar so she could hear any movement. She read a bit and she feel asleep. When she got up it was already dark and no trace of Calum.''He is free at last he can do what ever he likes, maybe he went by himself to visit the forbidden main-land, let him be.'' but when she went to the kitchen she thought she heard noises upstairs.

''I am not going to call him, not like her'' so she waited for a while then she turned on the coldwater in the empty sink and decided to fill the kettle.

Soon she recognized the thump of his steps on the stair. – Shall we make some tea Calum? She asked and she felt embarrassed for no reason.

 – I have tasted the dish you made Nikki, I have never tasted something so good. Did the littlemen helped you? And Calum gave her one of those smiles that melted her heart. He was able to smile with his whole body, with his hands and his eyes and even with his ears.

 – But I had no meat.

 – I don't like meat, I didn't want to eat it but she.... she said it was good for my health.

 – Do you have to work tomorrow again?

 – Why?

 – I thought maybe we take a walk on the other side of the island.

 – There are some scary stories Nikki, about the places there...

 – I thought there would be....Calum was right she managed to make a very good egg-plant stew. As for the meat as long as she

was concerned there was no need for meat again in that house. They were eating and drinking tea and talking at the same time not paying any attention but only to thestory and to the scariest parts only to make fun of them. After they cleaned the kitchen they said goodnight.

- - - - - - -

 – I can eat this eggplant stew every day and I won't get bored.

 – It is easy to make, the same way you do cabbage stew and zucchinisew

- You never watch Tv calum do you read books do you listen to music? Have you seenany movies?

–I think I am ready now to believe in fairies, the little men told me it would besafer if you bury some of your treasure.

 – I want my room back

 – I don't usualy eat= breakfast but I can keep you company if you want.

“I love Paris – it has such an awesome charm. On weekends off, I’ve taken off to the city and doneseveral visits to the Louvre. I’ve seen the classics, that everyone goes to see, but it was a picturethat wasn’t famous, that didn’t have a name that I liked the most. I can’t even describe it to you.

That’s the great thing about art. You can get something from it. It doesn’t need a reputation, afamous painter or a big crowd standing around it. I think I appreciate art, because I am not very goodat it. It’s a bit of zone out for me, and art is different in each place you go. I like the fact that is asvaried as life.”
