DEPARTEMENT DE V^LCEA

Le dpartement de V@lcea est situ dans le Centre-Sud de la Roumanie.La surface total du dpartement reprsente 2,4% du territoire du pays.Presque la moiti en sont couvert de forets et de vgtation forestire. Ledpartement de V@lcea, bord au nord par les Carpates mridionales, conna[ttoutes les formes de relief: depuis les montagnes, dont les sommets dpassent2.200 m, les plateaux et les collines, aux dpressions et valles propices lagriculture.

Le rseau hydrographique y est dense. La rivire de lOlt, qui arrose

le dpartement de V@lcea, runit dans son bassin de nombreux cours deau.Dans le dpartement il y a deux municipes: R@mnicu V@lcea - chef-lieu du dpartement - et Dr`g`]ani, ainsi que six villes: C`lim`ne]ti, Brezoi,Horezu, Ocnele Mari, Ol`ne]ti, Govora.

Le dpartement est attest pour la premire fois dans un documentdat le 8 janvier 1392 par lequel le prince de la Valachie, Mircea cel B`tr@n(1386-1418) confrait au Monastre de Cozia, trouv dans la mme zone, ledroit sur lapiculture dans le dpartement de V@lcea.

Limpressionant rseau touristique du dpartement runit des lieux etdes vestiges historiques et culturels trs prcieux, dont certains sont uniques,comme les monastres de Cozia, Hurezi, Govora, Bistri\a, Dintr-un Lemn,Surpatele, Arnota, Episcopia R@mnicului, la Monastere Fr`sinei avec safascinante histoire(lAthos de la Roumanie).

A cela sajouttement les camps fortifis roumains et les cits gto-daces et daco-roumaines de Buridava ou de la Voie de Trajan, sur la Vallede lOlt, le cit Arutela et la spendide Table de Trajan.

Dans les rserves naturelles des Monts Cozia et des Monts Buila, V@

nturari\a et C`p`\@nii sont protges, comme des espces rares de la flore etde la faune de Roumanie.Le dpartement est gallement intressant au point de vue touristique

par ses muses de spcialit distribues sur tout son territoire.Le plus important est le Muse dpartemental dHistoire de la ville de

THE V^LCEA COUNTY

The V@lcea county is situated in the Central-Southern part of Romania.Its surface is 2,4 per cent of Romania, of which about a half is covered byforests and forestry flora. The V@lcea county, bordered to the North by theMeridional Carpathians has all formations of relief: mountains up to 2,200 mabove sea level, plateaux and hills, valley which are proper for agriculture.The hydrographic network is rich, the Olt River crosses the V@lcea county ona length of 130 Km, gathering in its basin numerous other courses.

The county has two municipalities: R@mnicu V@lcea, the capital cityand Dr`g`]ani; six towns: C`lim`ne]ti, Brezoi, Horezu, Ocnele Mari, Ol`ne]ti, Govora. The V@lcea county is dated from to January, 8th, 1392 and it ismentioned in a document of Mircea cel B`tr@n, Voivode of the Wallachia(1386-1418) by which the bee culture in the V@lcea county is given to the CoziaMonastery. The territory of this county is well-organized administrativelyand inhabited since long time ago as the archaeological discoveries show.

The picturesque regions and the curing waters contributed tothe development of the tourism here. The table waters from C`lim`ne]

ti-C`ciulata, Govora and Ol`ne]ti are miraculous in the cure of a lot ofdiseases. The tourist network of this county consists in cultural, historic andarchitectural monuments, much of them beig unique ones as the monasteriesof Cozia, Horezu, Govora, Bistri\a, Dintr-un Lemn, Surpatele, Arnota,Episcopal Palace of R@mnic, Fr`sinei most faimost monastery (RomaniansAthos). Also there are Geto-Dacian and Dacian Roman camps and fortressesfrom Buridava, or Arutela and Table of Trajan from the Calea lui Traian onthe Olt Valley. In the natural reservations situated in the Cozia, Buila, V@nturari\a and C`p`\@nei Mountains are protected, as monuments of nature,

some species of Romanians flora and fauna.In the V@lcea county there are sixteen museums. The main one is the

History Museum in R@mnicu V@lcea with its 50,000 exhibits which depictsthe history of the Romanian people on this land. The other museums are alsointeresting: Nicolae B`lcescu Memorial in his native village; Art Museum

C`lim`ne]ti - C`ciulata was THE FAVOURITE WATERINGPLACE OF THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON III !

The mineral water springs of the river OLT Valley are mentioned asearly as the reports of the Roman legions. In the modern times, as early as1860, the place has already acquired fame in Europe as its waters, embottledand transported to PARIS, were regularly used by the Emperor Napoleon IIIof France, who compared them to the similar ones, of the thermal spaces inFrance(such as Chapelle, Eaux Bonnes and Chatelguyan).

The locality we are going to present is situated in V@lcea County, yet

another Romanian land where the blessed green of nature sceneries that are asight for the sore eyes of travellers.In 1855 young doctor Carol Davila visited the localities of C`lim`ne]

ti, C`ciulata and Cozia, and was amazed at the breath-taking view, andespecially at the richness of mineral sources spurting everywhere. ThisFrenchman, having a lasting love affair with Romania and being the founder,together with doctor N. Kretzulescu, of the Romanian medical school, began,together with a team of experts, to study the curative waters of the water. Hewas the one who warmly recommended them to Napoleon III who had some

kidney disorder. Thus, the Emperor became a keen user of the miraculouswaters bottled at C`ciulata and sent to him by coach. In good justice, thesestrongly sulfurous, bicarbonate springs, also containing chlorine, calciumand magnesium, aroused the interest of Europeans, garnering several goldenmedals at the international exhibitions of Vienna (1873) and Brussels (1893).Beginning with the Romans who had discovered, in the first century of this

millennium, their healing powers, numerous pained people drank from orbathed in these sources in order to ease their suffering. To this day they havepreserved intact all their fantastic qualities. Thus they are used to balancethe stomachs secretion and stimulate the contraction of the gall bladder,they have good results in gastritis, ulcers, liver and gall bladder maladies.Moreover, they can lower the cholesterol level, assure an optimum amountof calcium in the blood, help drain the kidneys, often favoring the dissolutionor elimination of stones, and they allay chronic rheumatismal pains, and stiffjoints. They also have beneficial effects in peripheral neurological disordersand post-trauma sequelae, as well as in gynecological and cardiovasculardiseases. Worth mentioning is also the fact that some C`lim`ne]ti-C`ciulata

springs have outstanding anti-allergic qualities, the mineral water being usedin the form of injections. With its 14 ordinary and thermal sources, the resortcan be put down in a European book of records, as few spas may boast somany mineral sources gathered in such a small area. The treatment basefeatures a tiny mineral rivulet. Daily, upwards of 400000 liters of mineralwater are used for external cure! The present-day name puts together thedenominations of two localities. C`lim`ne]ti is separated from C`ciulata bya 3 km highway corridor. This is actually a promenade along the right bankof the Olt where the old bath pavilion of C`lim`ne]ti was first established.

The place is at an altitude of 280 m. Here the river escapes the Cozia-C@ineni straits, after having washed the craggy sides of the Lotru Mountainsand the F`g`ra] Massif. In this excellent nest against winds, surrounded bysuperb woods that keep the air clean and ozonized, the resort is open all yearlong, and summers here, as everywhere else in the region, are a spectacleof colours. There are three big treatment hotels at C`ciulata: Cozia, Oltuland C`ciulata, each with its treatment facilities, outdoor swimming pool,electrical therapy installation. There is a magic triangle of spas, togetherwith the neighbouring Ol`ne]ti and Govora resorts. It is not only the mineral

sources that can be seen almost everywhere, while new ones keep on poppingup, but especially the landscape that does wonders to ones bill of heath. Itcures you of insomnia, stress, anxiety.

Near the three treatment hotels, at C`ciulata there stands the Coziamonastery. Those who cherish stories of mediaeval knights will be interestedto learn that the man who had the abode erected, Prince Mircea the Old(1386-

1418) of Wallachia can be seen in an impressive fresco on the church narthex.The white monastery cells hang above the Olt river, delighting present-dayvisitors just like they once flabbergasted so many a romantic poet. Thena village museum at Bujoreni, with exquisite households, typical of theregion, could be another well-deserved stop before romping into the beechand common oak forests surrounding the resort, graced also by so many wildflowers and shiny butterflies.

Der Kreis hat zwei Munizipen: R@mnicu V@lcea, Kreishauptstadt und Dr`g`]ani sowie sechs Stdte: C`lim`ne]ti, Brezoi, Horezu, Ocnele Mari, Ol`ne]ti, Govora.Die erste schriftliche Besttigung stammt vom 8 Januar 1392, in einem Freibrief ausder Zeit Mircea des Alten, Frst der Walachei (1386-1418) in dem gezeigt wird, dassdem Cozia-Kloster die Bienenzucht dieses Kreises geschenkt wird. Das V@lceaGebiet kennt schon aus den ltesten Zeiten sesshafte Niederlassungen, so wie es diearchologischen Funde besttigen und die alte rmische Niederlassungen erwhnen.

Das touristische Potential des Kreises besteht aus wertvolllen historischen undkulturellen Kunstwerken: die Klster Cozia, Hurezi, Govora, Bistri\a, Arnota, Dintr-un Lemn, Surpatele, Episcopia R@mnicului, Fr`sinei. Dazu kommen die getisch-dakischen und dakisch-rmischen Kastren und Festungen von Buridava oder Calea luiTraian auf dem Olt-Tal, Arutela und Masa lui Traian. In den Naturschutzgebieten desCoziei, Buila, V@nturari\a und C`p`\@nii-Gebirge gibt seltene Pflanzen und Tierarten

Rumniens.Der Kreis hat 16 Musees. Im Geschichtsmuseum der Kreisresedenz sind fast

50000 Exponate ausgestellt, die ber das Bestehen des rumnischen Volkes aus denltesten Zeiten bis in unseren Tagen spreches.
