    Chengshan (8rinary ladder 56), Kunlun (8rinary ladder 9#), Huantiao (:allbladder 3#), Yanglingquan (:allbladder 37).

Zusanli is indicated for any disorder of the stomach, esecially disorders arising out of irregulareating or drinking. $any -1$ hysicians consider roer functioning of the /middle/ to be the

key to treating almost any disorder. 2f the body is roerly nourished it can exel any inader andreair any damage that may be done.

-he 5 inuries are; ".) excessie use of the eyes which inures the blood, .) excessie lying down

which inures Qi, 3.) excessie sitting which inures the flesh, 7.) excessie standing which

inures the bones, 5.) excessie walking which inures the sinews.

*inally, Zusanli, because of its ability to clear hlegm and fire, fortify the 0leen, romote

/correct/ flow of @i, and because its diergent channel connects with the eart (which houses

one/s sirit), is indicated in a number of sycho= emotional disorders inoling manic behaiour, such as mania=deression, manic singing, raing, abusie talk, anger, fright, and outrageous

    laughter.

     Shu Points

hu Boints are a grou of oints located on the back, ".5 cun lateral to sinous rocesses of thethoracic and lumbar ertebra on the 8rinary ladder channel. hu oints are where the Qi of

each of the " ?ang *u organs surfaces and gathers. 'ccordingly, each of the hu oints strongly

tonifies its corresonding organ and is indicated for a wide ariety of disharmonies of that organ.elow the hu oints are resented as a grou. %ne additional note, the ack hu oints,

corresond to a similar grou of oints on the front of the body known as / !u/ oints. -here is a

*ront !u oint for each of the ?ang *u organs, but they occur on different channels. hile they

erform similar functions, the ack hu oints are sometimes referred in clinical ractice asthey are more easily accessed, but otherwise there is little difference between the two grous of

oints in terms of treating disharmonies of the ?ang *u organs. 'nother Auality of all these

oints, !u and hu is that they tend to become tender when there is organ disharmony so theycan be Auite useful for diagnostic uroses. *inally, these oints tend to be used in combinations.

*or examle, for conditions in the chest, eart and Lung hu oints may be needled together,

similarly, 0leen and 0tomach hu are often needled together.

    Location

note; all the shu oints are located on the inner 8rinary ladder channel. -he 8 channel runs

down the back in two searate aths. -he inner channel is located at a distance midway between

the midline of the sine, and a line drawn arallel from the innermost border of the 0caula or

".5 cun lateral to the sine. -he outer channel runs in a arallel line at a distance from the sine

leel with the inner border of the 0caula or 3 cun lateral to the sine. 'll the hu oints arelocated on the inner channel. ' cun is the distance between the nd and 3rd knuckles, or the

    Diagnosis

Diagnosis is of crucial imortance in any medical or healing system that works on the body.$etahysical healing systems tend to ay far less attention to the body assuming that remoing

emotional and mental causes will automatically remoe the hysical symtom. hile this is a

legitimate aroach, in the meantime, the body still needs to be looked after. -he following is a

brief oeriew of the diagnostic aroach of -raditional 1hinese $edicine.

-he oint of diagnosing is to

    design a treatment. 'n imroer

    diagnosis will lead to an

imroer treatment and as oftenas not a worsening of the

    conditions.

Gen though the aroach of -1$ seems fairly

    straightforward, the fact is that

    most often one encounters

numerous and oftencontradictory symtoms in the

    same atient.

-here is a lot more to diagnosing

then, than simle obseration of symtoms. %ne must take

account of the relatie strengths of symtoms, whether they are getting stronger or weaker in

relation to other symtoms, the relatie strength of the atient, and other such intangibles.2ntuition is as imortant a diagnostic tool as knowledge and exerience.

-he most common method of diagnosis in -raditional 1hinese $edicine is the so=called F

Brincials. Diagnosing a disharmony consists of asking whether the condition is

    2nternal or Gxternal,

    ot or 1old,

    a Deficiency or an Gxcess,

whether it has a Cin character or a Cang character.

1auses of Disease 'ccording to -raditional 1hinese $edicine.

-here are many factors that can cause disease. 2n 1hinese medicine in fact illness ischaracteried as a /syndrome./ -hat is a collection of symtoms that together make u a attern of

disharmony in the body. !or are these symtoms restricted to the body. 'long with hysical

symtoms, emotional and een mental states are considered in the diagnosing of a syndrome.

1auses of disease generally seaking fall into a number of general categories.

    -here are;

    a) 9 Gxogenous *actors,

     b) 6 Gndogenous (emotional) factors,c) conditions arising from imroer diet,

    d) too much actiity (hyeractiity),e) too little actiity stagnation,f) traumatic inury,

    g) insect, animal or retile bite.

ithin each category there are a number of differentiating categories to look at. *or examle the

    9 Gxogenous factors are;

-hese will Auickly be recognied as conditions that exist in nature. 8nder ordinary circumstances

these are not athological to the human body, but become so when conditions are extreme,

Gxogenous factors are seen as those that enter the body from the exterior and are closely related

    to seasonal changes.

eat and *ire 0yndromes are seen

most often in the summer. Damness

2nternal cause = characteried by longer term onset as the athogen works its way into the

interior of the body. 2n most cases the internal organs are affected and signs and symtoms of

channel and organ disharmony are seen. 0ee below for symtoms of each organ systemdisharmony.

Deficiency = deficiency refers to not enough @i to ward off athogenic factors. Deficiency

manifests in the body in different ways including deficiency of @i, deficiency of lood,

    Deficiency of Cin or Cang.

0ymtoms are aried but include; emaciation, listlessness, feeble breathing, loss of strength, shortness of breath, sontaneous sweating, night sweats, incontinence, and ain that is

Gxcess = refers to hyeractiity of @i in the body. Gxcess manifests in the body in different

ways including excess @i, excess lood, Gxcess Cin or Cang.

else in order to achiee harmony. 2n the area of diet, the 1hinese hae searated all foods into 5

different categories according to taste. Gach of these categories has a secific effect on the bodyand why 1hinese cooking makes eery effort to balance all fie tastes. -his is known as 5

    Glements theory.

    The !ive tastes are(

0o it is not so much that secific diets are bad for you, it is the oerindulgence of secific kinds

of diets that lead to illness. *or examle, oerindulgence in a hot sicy diet will lead to

symtoms of eat or *ire and excess in the body. ' strictly egetarian diet of raw egetables will

lead to symtoms of 1old and Deficiency. ' diet with too much Dairy in it will lead to symtomsof 1old and Bhlegm.

's well as the kinds of foods that are consumed attention must also be aid to how food is reared and how it is consumed. 2n -aoist hilosohy there is a lot more to food than ust eating

    5. Bungent taste is linked to the Lung organ system.

2t is often the case in 1hinese medicine that aroriate treatment for an illness is a change in

diet. -he line between what is food and what is medicine is Auite blurred, and many items thatare considered food or sice in the west are consumed for their medicinal roerties in the Gast.

'mong these, onions, garlic, umkin seeds, scallions, ginger, leeks, rhubarb, watermelon, mustard seeds, cinnamon, chies, and cloes.

    yeractiity, 0tagnation, -raumatic 2nury, 2nsect, 'nimal or +etile ite,

-hese are all ariations on a similar theme. Bhysical actiity, beyond one/s limit leads to inuriesto muscles and tendons. -hese can be relatiely minor or Auite serious. +elatiely minor inuries

not treated and ersistently aggraated can lead to serious inury oer time.

!ot enough hysical actiity leads to atrohy of muscles and tendons.

-he treatment is either to slow down or seed u. 2n other words figure out what the aroriateamount of hysical exercise is for you and do that.

e in !orth 'merica tend to think being bitten by insects, animals or retiles as little more than

an annoyance. 1ertainly here in 0outhern %ntario where 2 am, there/s nothing too dangerous.

0till there are many arts of the world where this sort of thing is a serious concern and animortant cause of illness that -1$ concerns itself with.

    Gndogenous 1auses

Gndogenous causes of illness are characteried in 1hinese medicine as the 6 Gmotions. -hey

    are;

". 'nger = associated with the Lier system

. Hoy = associated with the eart system

    3. orryJ %erthinking = associated with the 0leenJ0tomach system

    7. :rief = associated with the Lung system

    5. 0orrow = (chronic grief) associated with the Lung system

    9. *ear = chronic condition (hobias) associated with the &idney system

    6. *right = acute condition = associated with the &idney system.

Gmotional resonses hae an effect on the body. -his is nothing new. hen we are fearful or

seerely angry, the stomach tightens, we sweat, the heart ums faster and stronger, we breathe

faster, adrenaline and other chemicals are released into the blood to stimulate some organ

systems and shut others down. hen we are in grief or in oy we dont feel much like eating,

sleeing is difficult, we may hae heart alitations, or we may feel disoriented.

hile modern medicine continues to scratch its head and wonders if emotional resonses can

actually hae any lasting effect on the hysical body, ancient 1hinese hysicians had a usefulworking model of ust how emotions and the body are intricately linked and affect each other.

8sing this system we are able to diagnose internal disharmonies according to external symtomsobsered. -he following are some of the maor symtoms that one may obsere, the organ

system to which they aly and the emotion that is suggested by the symtom.

-his exercise is intended to hel you begin to understand what it is your body is telling you about

your emotional state. 's well it is to hel you understand how your emotional state affects the body. -he links between the body and the emotions are intimate and interactie. Bhysical

symtoms indicate emotional disharmony and emotional exression indicates hysical

disharmonies. 0trange as it may seem, 2 beliee that most of us are not nearly as familiar withour emotions as we might think.

*or examle; :rief is housed in the Lungs. :rief would then be seen as an imortant asect of

'sthma. 'ny treatment of 'sthma, to be effectie from an holistic ersectie would hae to

include reduction or release of :rief. 2n 'cuuncture, the same oint that is chosen to tonify theLungs also hels to release :rief.

-he following then is a list of symtoms, which are, in 1hinese medicine indicators of

disharmony in the fie main organ systems, which according to the 5 elements theory suggests

    also an underlying emotional comonent.

    0leenJorry.

-he 0leens main function is to -ransform water, food and air into @i and -ransort that @i

    throughout the body.

!eedless to say, this is an imortant function. 2f the body is roerly nourished, the 0leen cando its ob and good health is the result.

2f the 0leen does not receie the roer raw materials it has to work that much harder to extract

the @i and transort it. 's this function is critical to the organism as a whole, the key to any

treatment for any kind of illness is to feed the body well. 2n seere illness this may inoleherbal or harmaceutical medication.

-he emotion of the 0leen is orry or %erthinking. -he balance of Cin and Cang is always the

goal.2t is recommended that one eat in eaceful surroundings without distractions. 0ome recommend

that one not een talk to others while eating and certainly watching -E, reading, doing

homework, or catching a bite on the run are not healthy things to do.

%f course, this becomes a icious cycle. -he more we worry, the more deficient the 0leen

becomes which in turn causes us to worry still more.

!ourishing the body is absolutely rimary in the recoery from any illness.

2f the 0leen system is nourished roerly, the better it can nourish all the other systems and their

related emotions.2n the est, erhas it is a stretch to gras that simle changes to ones diet can hae far reaching

emotional and hysical conseAuences, but in the Gast it is a fundamental rincial. Cou may takenote of the fact that eole who mainly /think/ for a liing often hae stomach roblems.

-he following hysical symtoms suggest a 0leen dysfunction of some kind. Gmotionally, they

    suggest orryJ%erthinking.

*atigueJtirednessJlistlessness;Buffy eyelids and uffiness under the eyes

Bainful, numb or tingling extremities, esecially the feet.

    8lcersJhyeracidityJchronic heartburnJindigestion.

    0tomach aches

2t is often the case that these symtoms come and go related directly to our diet and our

roensity for worry. %ften we dont ay much attention until something becomes chronic and

starts to affect our lies. 2f a symtom is not too much of an inconenience we either ignore it or coer it u and go on with what we were doing.

0ince *atigue is a maor symtom of 0leen dysfunction, if you hae 1hronic *atigue 0yndrome

it might be a good idea to look at your roensity to worry or oer=think things, as well as your

diet, not only what you eat but how you eat.

    -he Lungs.

Disharmony in the Lungs takes forms; a) acute such as the resonse to sudden loss of a

family member, and b) chronic = characteried as /sorrow/ which may be held in the body for

    months or years.

-he Lungs are associated with the emotion of :rief. 0ymtoms indicating a Lung system

0weating, esecially sontaneous sweating in the absence of a cold or flu, indicates a Lungdeficiency, or erhas a clearing of grief along with other athogenic factors. 0ontaneous

sweating is a common symtom of cleansing.

    -he LierJ'nger

-he Lier is resonsible for the free flow of @i in the body. 2t stores blood and is resonsible for

maintaining blood leels and efficiency. -he emotion attached to the Lier is 'nger.

0ince the Liers resonsibility is to moe @i in the body, a Lier disharmony will hae an effecton all the other organ systems

    and their related emotions.

hile the basis for the 5Glements theory is recisely that

    all organ systems, their

functions, and related emotionsis in fact, that they are

    interconnected and affect each

other, -he Lier/s effect is articularly ronounced.

    -his is consistent with the

    obseration that 'nger is a

articularly strong, een rimalemotion. 'nger is often seen in

healthy thing to do. -he exression of 'nger, at least temorarily has the effect of romoting @i

flow and clearing stagnant blockages in the body. 0uressing 'nger causes @i to stagnate in the

Lier and therefore affects @i flow in the body as a whole.%f course, we must emhasie that the exression of 'nger in articular situations is only a

temorary measure. 2t is what the ody does when all other measures fail.

    0ymtoms of Lier dysfunction include;

Bain or distention in the hyochondriac region, at the sides of the body around the diahragm is acommon sign of Lier disharmony.

'cute, stabbing ains anywhere in the body

2n 1hinese $edicine, any kind of ain is considered to be 0tagnation of @i and or lood. -his

means that the treatment rincial for any kind ain is usually Nmoe @i lood. *rom a -1$ ersectie then, if you hae *ibromyalgia or some other such condition characteried by

/mystery/ ain, it would be a good idea to look at your 'nger.

    -he eartJHoy

-he heart houses the $ind in 1hinese $edicine. -he brain is considered an extraordinary *u

organ, that is an Nemty sac, which is a characteristic of *u organs. -he rain is seen as a lace to store and rocess raw data.

2t is in the eart that a ersons essence and ersonality is ket.-his is why, in 1hinese $edicine, many mental roblems are seen as disharmonies of the

    eart.

Bhysical manifestations of weak Cuan @i are birth defects, roblems with birth, weak

0trong healthy babies are said to hae strong Cuan @i.

hether one has strong or weak Cuan @i will affect one throughout life. eak Cuan @i, or
