RomeChurch Our Lady of the Angels, built on the ruins of the Diocletian Baths. The construction of  the church was commissioned to Michelangelo. We can note the bronze doors, created by Igor Mitoraj (born 1944) - Polish sculptor who used to live in Italy.

In 2006 Igor Mitoraj created the new bronze doors for the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome. Mitoraj's sculptural style is rooted in the classical tradition with its focus on the well modeled torso. However, Mitoraj introduces a post-modern twist with ostentatiously truncated limbs, emphasizing the damage sustained by most genuine classical sculptures.

Born March 15, 1943 in Romania, Márton Váró studied sculpture at Ion Andreescu Institute of Arts in Cluj, Romania from 1960 to 1966. In 1970, he moved to Debrecen, Hungary, where he completed several sculptures for public places and was awarded the Munkacsy Prize in 1984.

Receiving a Fulbright scholarship in 1988, Márton Váró became affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, studying the relationship between architecture and sculpture. In 1990, he became the Artist in Residence for a public art project in the City of Brea, California.

Márton Váró lives and works in the USA, in California and Florida, spending summers working in Carrara, Italy.

For two years, the sight of Márton Váró at work was almost as familiar to residents of Ave Maria University (Naples, Florida ) as the town’s well-known oratory, on whose façade Mr. Varo’s marble sculpture of The Annunciation now rests.

Oratory at the Ave Maria Campus Florida

The large Annunciation sculpture on the face of the Oratory at the Ave Maria Campus is being worked on by famous sculpture, Márton Váró . The project, took nearly three years and more than $3 million dolars and was the first project by Ave Maria Foundation for the Arts, a group funded by private donations..

The relief depicts the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 120 tons of Carrara marble hand selected from Cava Michelangelo, the same quarry Michelangelo used. It shows an angel giving Mary a message, “Ave Maria.”

Once the project began Marton made several trips back and forth from Italy to Ave Maria carving portions of the relief in both places.

The smaller five pieces were carved in Italy while the larger stones measuring 210 cm x 230 cm were carved at Ave Maria, making the largest blocks almost 7 1/2 feet tall.
