    In Bucharest and Budapest tram had different beginnings and

    different stages of evolution.

    The first tram services in the world were started by the OystermouthRailway in Wales, using specially designed carriages on an existingtramline built for horse-drawn freight dandies. Fare-paying passengers werecarried on a line between Oystermouth, umbles and !wansea "oc#s from18!.

    The tram was wor#ed by steam from 18!!, and the first electric tramappeared in 188.

    The first $Romanian !ociety of Trams% was born in &'(& and the firsttrams pulled by horses appear on the streets of )ucharest.

    The route was between )ariera ogo*oaiei and +alea cre ti. n that period in )ucharest were only around '// streets and a few of

    them paved. The first railway line was opened in &'01 between )ucharest and

    2iurgiu.

    n )ucharest under socialist times the development of tram lines increasedand new types of trams were introduced. The reason is that compared with)udapest in )ucharest the first metro line was opened in &8(8.

    company which managed the whole transport system in )ucharest. ;fter the construction of the underground the tram trac#s decreased in the

    Tram networ# in )ucharest measures &@& #m, there are 7@ lines and itcarry around &&/ passengers a year, less than the metro system,around &(/ million passengers.

    )eside 7@ tram lines, there are currently three converted light

    rail lines >so called metrou uorwhich translates as light metro?.Iight rail use upgraded trams and also run on separate designatedcorridors for faster travel times.

    The light rail service is expected to be expanded by upgradingexisting tram lines to light rail status.
