    Many people wish or a betterunderstanding o the organizationthey work or. They know how to dotheir job, but would like a set o ideasand a way o thinking to help themunderstand and improve the waythings are done organizationally. Withsuch understanding they may be more

    success ul, and help to create moreproductive and satis ying workplacesor others. It is or people like this thatour programmes in OrganizationalPsychology and Human ResourceManagement have been designed.

    The programmes are concerned withthe social and psychological processes

    operating in organizations, and how theseprocesses relate to organizational systemsand structures. Both programmes usecurrent and classic theory and research toenable you to understand organizations,and to develop ways o improvingthem. Such improvements come inmany orms, rom selecting, training,

    and motivating people, to maintainingand enhancing their well-being.

    Spreading the costYou are not expected to pay inull as soon as you start your rstmodule, unless you choose to do

    so. Generally, students choose thepay-as-you-go option, spreadingthe cost by paying or each newmodule in turn. But it is up to you.

    AssessmentWith the exception o Organizationalanalysis, Organizational researchand the Dissertation, each module is

    examined by a one-hour unseen writtenpaper. Organizational analysis andOrganizational research are assessed jointly by a single research proposalo between 5,000 and 6,000 words. The Dissertation (MSc students only)is assessed by a 10,000-word scienti creport. Examinations are o eredonce a year in October, in over 190centres worldwide. You can sit themlocally, whenever you are ready.

    Flexible studyYou can study or a ull MSc,Postgraduate Diploma or choose to takea single module or your continuingpro essional development. I you do not

    You have between 2-5 years tocomplete the MSc, and 1-5 years tocomplete the Postgraduate Diploma.

    Time commitmentProvided you complete the MSc withinve years, you can study at your ownpace. For instance, you do not haveto take examinations every year. As arough guide, i you wish to complete inthe minimum study period you shouldbe prepared to study 20 hours perweek during the academic session. Thisruns rom February until November.

    The Virtual LearningEnvironment The dynamic element o the programmeis provided through the Virtual LearningEnvironment. This provides:Virtual seminars. You are placed ina group o about 15 students with ahighly quali ed online con erencingtutor. For each module, over a periodo (usually) ten weeks, you discuss ve

    set topics in this con erencing group.Because these discussions are not in realtime you can ask questions, give youropinions, request clari cation, read thecontributions made by others, etc., atwhatever time o the day or the week suits you. I you are away rom home,even on the other side o the world,it makes no di erence as long as you

    what you are reading. These activitiesconstitute the oundations or youronline discussions and enable you toget a good grasp o the subject.

    The resource packAll o the readings included in yourresource pack are required reading orthe module you are studying. They

    are usually introduced in the subjectguide as part o an activity, with themodule author explaining why thereading is important and guiding youto particular aspects o the reading.You are encouraged to extend yourreading beyond the resource pack andmake use o the University o LondonOnline Library to get access to the verylatest research articles on the subject.

    Online discussionsOnline discussions are a very importantpart o the course, and bene t both youand the other students in your group. The average number o contributionsper student is between three andve per topic, with 10 contributionsbeing the maximum allowed. At rst,you may nd the prospect o joiningin a discussion with people you have

    not met be ore rather daunting, butyou will probably nd that once youhave made one or two contributionsyou eel ar more con dent about joining in. Although you are requiredto participate in the discussion, you willnot be assessed on your contributions,so you can enjoy the opportunity toexplore the subject and share your

    Gaining a prestigious University of London qualication

    As an International Programmesstudent, you register with theUniversity o London or oneo its awards. The academicdirection o your programme including the syllabus,assessment, learning resourcesand, where given, academicsupport is the responsibilityo a particular College, orconsortium o Colleges, o the

    University o London, knownas the Lead College. Birkbeck is the Lead College or theprogrammes in this lea et.

    When you graduate with adegree, diploma or certi caterom the University o Londonyou will be sent two documents a nal diploma (the parchmentyou receive on graduation)and a Diploma Supplement.

    The nal diploma indicatesthat you were registered withthe University o London andawarded a University o Londondegree or diploma, and gives thename o the Lead College whichconducted the examinations. The University o London logoand the Vice-Chancellorssignature are incorporated.

    The Diploma Supplement

    Module outlinesOrganizational analysisAn overview o the di erent levelso analysis within organizationalresearch. Emphasis will be placed onthe di erent paradigms rom whichto analyse organizations, and theroles o theories and acts. Evidence-based and re exive practice will beevaluated, as well as some speci coci on analysing power, gender andethics. The aim o this module is to

    provide a sound basis rom whichto explore, evaluate and critique anyissue within organizational psychologyor human resource management.

    Organizational researchIntroduces the areas o knowledgewhich are necessary to critically evaluateresearch reports and papers, and

    provides the knowledge needed tocarry out a quantitative or qualitativeResearch project. Areas covered willinclude: research design; sampling; bothqualitative and quantitative approachesto data collection; the statistical analysiso quantitative data; the preparationo research reports and the use o di erent paradigms in research.

    Understanding andchanging organizations The module will include lectures,seminars and group work. The aimo group work is to give you theopportunity to develop skills o criticaldiscussion; to evaluate evidencepresented to you; and to presentan argument to others. It is also anopportunity or you to learn about awide range o organizations; to draw

    on di erent experiences o work, andto build up networks with otherswho are interested in similar areas.On this module, we will introduce youto the wide range o approaches toanalysing and changing organizations.Examples o the topics included are:n strategyn organisational developmentn culturen power and politicsn in uencing organisational changen ashion and organisationsn management consultancyn discourse and change.

    Selection and assessment This module is designed to cover thekey issues involved in selecting andassessing people at work. Variousselection methods are described,and the criteria used or evaluatingthem are discussed. The nature andcauses o good job per ormance, andissues relating to the process o jobselection, are considered. A discussiono the validity o various job selection

    methods is ollowed by an examinationo the psychological processes involvedin selection. Finally, the airness o selection systems is considered.

    Life career development This begins by examining the concepto career rom a variety o perspectives.It considers the process o occupational

    choice and occupational socialisationand di erent types o career path.Various ways o representing peoplescareers and ways o intervening in careerdevelopment are discussed. Studentsare helped to understand their ownli e-career development and considerways in which they can help themselvesand others make role transitions.

    Career counsellingand coachingStudents are helped to develop anunderstanding o the theoretical basiso career counselling. This is achievedby exploring ideas rom the mainapproaches to counselling generally,and drawing out the implicationsand applications particularly relevantto career counselling. The modulethen considers session management,

    assessment and the use o in ormationand communication technologyin career counselling. Ethical andpro essional issues are also addressed.

    Work and well-being The aim o this module is to developan understanding o the nature andextent o relationships between

    work and well-being. Areas coveredinclude the determinants o well-being; relationships between work andwell-being; work and well-being in thecontext o everyday li e; unemployment;the role o individual di erences;stress; and the use o organizationaland individual interventions aimedat in uencing well-being.

    Motivation andperformance at workExamines contemporary work motivation theories within a coherentramework and the causes o highper ormance. Areas to be covered willinclude: content, need, process, andcognitive theories o work motivation;the identi cation and measurement o per ormance criteria; explanations orhigh per ormance; and the relationship

    between per ormance and a variety o organizational variables including pay,leadership, groups, job design, work systems, technical change, involvementand commitment, attribution andsel -efcacy, and goal setting.

    Training and development The meaning o training and

    development is explored. Several modelso e ective training are introduced, andways o identi ying training needs areexamined. Theoretical approaches tolearning are discussed. Various trainingmethods are covered in relation toboth theoretical aspects o learningand the nature o the material to belearnt. Finally, the ways in which trainingcan be evaluated are considered.

    New technology at workNew orms o computer-based technologypresent both opportunities and challengesor organizations. How can this technologybe designed to acilitate e ective use?What new ways o working are implicatedby advanced technologies? This modulecovers a range o psychological andorganizational issues pertaining to theuse o new technology at work, romdesigning and evaluating the human-

    machine inter ace to analysing themanagement o technological change.

    Dissertation The Dissertation takes the orm o anempirical study, quantitative or qualitative,conducted by the student on someaspect o Organizational Psychologyand Human Resource Management.

    Employment relations This module provides an overview o current developments in employeerelations. It considers the in uence o employers, employees, trade unions andthe state in shaping the employmentrelationship. Areas covered include theissues o management strategy andstrategic choice; exibility in employmentand managing diversity; the re orm o

    International humanresource management This module addresses the issues raised

    by international and comparativeHuman Resource Management (HRM). Itexplores the impact o national culture,the debates in the comparative HRMliterature and examples o di erencesin the way HRM is conducted aroundthe world. It also examines howinternational organisations deal withthe extra complexity that operating

    internationally brings to HRM.

    Practices in humanresource management This module is concerned withthe practice o human resourcemanagement in organisations. Itconsiders issues relating to the linksbetween HRM strategy, policy andpractice, highlighting potential modelso best practice and barriers to success ulimplementation, where appropriate.

    It discusses HRM policy and practiceconcerning recruitment and selection,organisational exit, per ormancemanagement, careers, training anddevelopment, job design and reward.It examines employee relations andequal opportunities in the contexto their relationship with HRM.

    Leadership and humanresource management

    This module discusses di erentapproaches to managing and leadingpeople at work. In particular two maintopics are covered: First, Human ResourceManagement, which ocuses on theoryand practice o the management o employment or people in organizations.Second, Leadership, which ocuseslargely on the management o so t

    actors at work rom the perspectiveo leader and ollowers and theprocesses evolving between them.

    Continuing Professional

    Development (CPD)Many pro essionals need to updatetheir knowledge by ocusing on aparticular subject. As a result, ourmodules are also available on a stand-alone basis or the purposes o CPD(with the exception o Organizationalanalysis, Organizational research andthe Dissertation). You can register

    or a maximum o three modules,which can be studied simultaneously.On success ul completion o eachmodule you will receive a University o London certi cate. The ee or studyingan individual module is 1,090.

    When I embarked on the course I wasnt surewhere my li e would be taking me over the nextew years so chose to take the course via thedistance learning route. I chose Birkbeck becauseit seemed to have the highest reputation andcredibility in my pro ession (HR and people

    development) in the UK. Although an experiencedtraining manager with several quali cations andpractical certi cates under my belt, I really eltthe need to deepen my knowledge o my eldand increase my con dence and credibility. I alsoelt that having an MSc was becoming moreimportant i I wanted to go urther in my career.

    The tutors and quality o materials on theprogramme are truly excellent and up-to-date.

    From discussions with riends and colleagues theygo ar deeper and challenge much more thanmany other Masters programmes out there.

    This course has de nitely increased andimproved my critical and strategic thinking, andgiven me much more con dence in my work. Ithas brought me up to date in the key areas o organizational psychology and opened doors inmy career path which I previously did not see.
