CETATEA BRĂILEI
Cetatea Brăilei a fost o realitate istorică de l a jumătatea veacului al XVI-
lea p ână l a 18 29.
A evoluat ca t oate celelalte forticații de pe linia Dunării de Jos su b
ochiul atent al turcilor – adaptând-o poate greoi progreselor m ilitare – mai
ales celor a le artileriei – dar și sub presiunea înaintării rusești spre sud-
estul Europei.
A trecut de multe ori în mâinile creștinilor, dar a revenit mereu în
stăpânirea Porții chiar ș i atunci când, în 1812, nimic n u mai sugera un astfel
de deznodământ.
Distrugerea ei a fost h otărâtă de ruși încă din timpul luptelor d in
1828, apoi deznodământul s-a p rodus lăsând astăzi doar ur me – de multe
ori greu de găsit ș i de explicat – dar car e merită efortul nostru de a le
cunoaște și a le v alorica.

THE CITADEL OF BRĂILA
The citadel of Brăila was a historical reality from the rst half ofthe si xteenth century until 1829.
It evo lved, as the other f ortications along the course of t heLower Danube, under t he careful scrutiny of the Turks – adaptingperhaps difficultly to the military development – especially of t heartillery – but also u nder the p ressure o f the Russian advance t owards
South-Eastern Europe.
It was m any times in Christian hands, but it always r eturnedunder the con trol of the Porte even when, in 1812, nothing suggestedsuch a f ate.
Its demolition was decided by the Russians from the veryperiod of the b attle o f 1828, than its f ate w as p roduced leaving today
only trails – often difficult to be d iscovered and explained – but whichdeserve to be known and to be val ued.
