noastre.
Ea a dezvoltat, atât decorul

THE COLLECTION OF INDOOR FABRICS.
TOWELS. CARPETS
Indoor textiles are thinner or thicker pieces of woven, made from yarn of plant origin
(flax, hemp, cotton), or animal origin (wool, silk), found in every household for domestic use.
Towels, tablecloths, pillow cases, little window curtains and others – as thin fabrics, wall
rugs, counterpanes, coverlets, blankets, carpets – as thick fabrics. They were originally
produced having simple ornaments and colours. From the simple stripes painting style,
ancient work technique, kept for beautifying textiles of daily use, it got to many compositions
produced by weaving patterns ( by hand yarn separating and combining) and stitches, in
which the old motifs were reunited with motifs inspired by plant and animal world, in a
wonderful and colourful harmony.
The Museum collection of towels covers almost the entire geographical area of our
country. It must be mentioned that most of them date since the 20th century, but there are also
around 150 year old towels, donated by Mrs. Ileana Stoianovici and Dr. PS Damaschin
Coravu, Bishop of Slobozia and Călăraşi.
At the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, cultivation of textile
plants (flax, hemp, cotton) and sheep and silkworms farming, have become occupations of
national importance, supported by the Government, for their potential of harnessing in our
country. We are talking about the climate, quality of the soil, sowing season, the seed amount
per hectare, the caring during vegetation, the used fertilizers, and the harvesting type of the
textile plants. In the same time, growing silkworms becomes an increasingly prosperous
business starting a mass production in Romania. At the end of 20th century, our country starts
producing chemical fibres (artificial and synthetic), which through the technical variety and
yarn colour obtained from them, become very attractive for the popular craftswomen. Many
craft cooperatives are set up and produce fabrics, including towels, using traditional patterns.
All this is also reflected upon the towels manufactured in these periods of time. In the period
of economical conditions of this time, the household textile industry continues to stand.
Traditional fabrics and hand embroidery are not so popular towards the end of the 20th
century, therefore museums and other specialized institutions make efforts to rescue and
revive this weaving tradition. The traditional towel, besides its genuine and innovative folk
creation, has always accompanied Romanians in all customs related to the cycle of life (birth,
wedding and funeral) and agrarian rites. Its ornamental using (applying) or accessory function
makes it essential and basic in every household.
Since ancient times, carpets have always been present in areas where houses weren't
pasted up or whitewashed on the inside. They were used on walls, beds and floors to keep the
house warm. At first they had simple decorations and colours, but later, compositions
emerged in an unexpected diversity. Our collection includes items from different areas:
Oltenia, Muntenia, Moldavia, Maramureş and Banat. They were woven on vertical and
horizontal looms, using cotton or wool yarn (at warp), and wool dyed with natural or chemical
pigments (at weft).
The defining feature of the carpet is its unity of composition. Like any artistic
composition, it has a core of interest surrounded by the other elements. The most beautiful
piece of this collection is a carpet which has two frames, with large motifs on the wide border
and a central field riche regarding the chosen ornaments (geometric, vegetal, zoomorphic,
anthropomorphic or tree of life). Tree of Life, as a complex motif in Romanian folk art,
includes also the bird, symbolizing the human soul after death. The bird flying towards the
sky represents the passage of the soul into the eternal world. Some come with influences from
areas where they were woven, but some have also got Balkan influences.
The carpet from Oltenia imposes itself by its herbal motifs and curved tissue. Usually,
the field and the frame of this carpet are covered with bouquets and branches with leaves and
flowers placed horizontally, in dense rows. The carpet from Muntenia develops in a special
way a geometrical design, having as main motif a concentric rhomb (diamond shape) with
serrated edges, crenellated or stepped, processed in different versions.
The carpet from Moldavia has a specific shape (longer instead of wider), with denser
fabric and with a large variety of motifs. It developed both geometrical decoration and herbal
decoration, styling old symbolic motifs of the tree of life and the flower vase. Among its
ornamental motifs the most frequent are the bird and tree of life. The carpet from Maramureş
is smaller. Rougher and more rustic, the fabric and the material doesn’t have the finesse or the
sumptuousness seen with the carpets from Oltenia or Moldavia, but has the perfect balance
between rudimentary technique and the force of artistic composition.
The carpet from Banat has a strong Balkan, Oriental and Turkish influence of motifs
and compositional forms. Geometric and herbal motifs are predominant. The only figure
motif is the butterfly.
Regardless of the ethnographic region of the weaving workshop, the Romanian carpet
was and will remain a warmth comfort for eyes and feet.
