    8P?

I like movies about smart guys who are wise asses, and think their way out of tangles

with criminals. I like courtroom scenes. I like big old cars. I like “The Lincoln Lawyer”

because it involves all three, and because it matches Matthew McConaughey with a

first-rate supporting cast, while so many thrillers these days are about a lone herosurrounded by special effects. eople have words they actually say in this movie. !fter

“Battle: Los Angeles,” that is a great relief.

Let"s start with the big old car. It"s a Lincoln, and a lawyer named #ick $aller%#c&onaughey' does most of his work out of the back seat. !pparently he drove it

himself until he was socked with a ()I* given how much he drinks in the film, it"s

ama+ing he remembered where he parked it. ow he has a chauffeur %Laurence

Mason' who ferries him around to the Los !ngeles dealers, hookers, bagmen and

low-lifes who are his clientele. #ick"s specialty is getting people off, sometimes in a

    perfectly legal way.

There were decades in the movies when heroes drove new cars, unless it was a period

picture. &ar makers used to pay for product placement. e saw #ustangs, T/s,&hargers. 0ut in recent years, action and thriller heroes have driven mostly classiccars, or oddballs like $ummers. The reason for this is obvious1 #odern cars all look

mostly the same, and none of them look heroic. &an you imagine 2ames 0ond in a&amry3 #y 4ord 4usion gets good mileage, but #ick $aller would 5ust look silly

doing business out of the back seat. The only new cars still popular in movies are big black 6)7s with tinted windows, which usually prowl in packs.

!nyway, $aller is a street-wise defense attorney with connections who knows how to

collect and invest prudent envelopes full of cash. 6o connected is this guy that amotorcycle gang materiali+es more or less when he needs one. /ne day a bondsman

% John Leguizamo' comes to him with a higher-class client than usual. Louis 8oulet

%Ryan Phillippe' is a rich kid from 0everly $ills accused of beating up a woman.

$e"s clean-cut, looks #ick in the eyes, seriously insists he is innocent and wants atrial to prove it.

#ick senses there is something fishy. 6o do I. If 8oulet has unlimited funds and really is innocent, why is he hiring a guy who works out of the back seat of a car3 I"ve seen a

lot of crime movies and read my  Raymond Chandler and 8oss #acdonald. I know,

even if #ick doesn"t, that he"s being used in some way.

Let"s not get into the details. (etails are interchangeable in movies like this. hat you

want is a laconic wise guy in the lead, and #c&onaughey does a nice line in those. 9ou

need a good dame in the picture. Marisa Tomei plays his e:-wife, courtroom

opponent and %still' friend. hen Tomei walks into a movie, it"s like the ;ueen cameinto the room. I want to stand up. I know why Lady aga wants #arisa to play her in

a biopic. It"s not because they look like sisters. It"s because every woman, and manymen, would love to have a smile like #arisa Tomei"s.

e also meet #ick"s opposing attorney % Josh Lucas'* a former client he plea-

bargained into prison %Michael Pena'* a cop %Bryan Cranston' who considers him

a shyster and, most valuable, #ick"s private investigator %William ! Macy'. The .I.

role isn"t very big, but #acy makes it distinctive* he brings it a re all on #ickey $aller>s client list. 4or him, the law is rarely about

guilt or innocence = it>s about negotiation and manipulation. 6ometimes it>s evenabout 5ustice.

! 0everly $ills playboy arrested for attacking a woman he picked up in a bar chooses$aller to defend him, and #ickey has his first high-paying client in years. It is a

defense attorney>s dream, what they call a franchise case. !nd as the evidence stacksup, $aller comes to believe this may be the easiest case of his career.

Then someone close to him is murdered and $aller discovers that his search forinnocence has brought him face-to-face with evil as pure as a flame. To escape
