White matter changes occur endemically in routine magnetic

resonance imaging (MRI) scans of elderly persons. MRI appearance

and histopathological correlates of white matter changes are

heterogeneous. Smooth periventricular hyperintensities, including

caps around the ventricular horns, periventricular lining and halos

are likely to be of non-vascular origin. They relate to a disruption of

the ependymal lining with subependymal widening of the

extracellular space and have to be differentiated from subcortical

and deep white matter abnormalities. For the latter a distinction

needs to be made between punctate, early confluent and confluent

types. Although punctate white matter lesions often represent

widened perivascular spaces without substantial ischemic tissue

damage, early confluent and confluent lesions correspond to

incomplete ischemic destruction. Punctate abnormalities on MRI

show a low tendency for progression, while early confluent and

confluent changes progress rapidly. The causative and modifying

pathways involved in the occurrence of sporadic age-related white

matter changes are still incompletely understood, but recent

microarray and genome-wide association approaches increased the

notion of pathways that might be considered as targets for

therapeutic intervention. The majority of differentially regulated

transcripts in white matter lesions encode genes associated with

immune function, cell cycle, proteolysis, and ion transport. Genome-

wide association studies identified six SNPs mapping to a locus on

chromosome 17q25 to be related to white matter lesion load in the

general population. We also report first and preliminary data that

demonstrate apolipoprotein E (ApoE) immunoreactivity in white

matter lesions and support epidemiological findings indicating that

ApoE is another factor possibly related to white matter lesion

occurrence. Further insights come from modern MRI techniques,

such as diffusion tensor and magnetization transfer imaging, as they

provide tools for the characterization of normal-appearing brain

tissue beyond what can be expected from standard MRI scans.

There is a need for additional pre- and postmortem studies in

humans, including these new imaging techniques. THE SPRINGER JOURNAL SELECTOR IS A FREE TOOL FROM EDANZ

Biomaterials is an international journal covering the science and clinical application of biomaterials. A biomaterial is now

defined as a substance that has been engineered to take a form which, alone or as part of a complex system, is used to

direct, by control of interactions with components of living systems, the course of any therapeutic or diagnostic procedure.

It is the aim of the journal to provide a peer-reviewed forum for the publication of original papers and authoritative review

and opinion papers dealing with the most important issues facing the use of biomaterials in clinical practice. The scope of

the journal covers the wide range of physical, biological and chemical sciences that underpin the design of biomaterials

and the clinical disciplines in which they are used. These sciences include polymer synthesis and

characterization, drug and gene vector design, the biology of the host response, immunology and toxicology and self

assembly at the nanoscale. Clinical applications include the therapies of medical technology and regenerative medicine

in all clinical disciplines, and diagnostic systems that reply on innovative contrast and sensing agents. The journal is

relevant to areas such as cancer diagnosis and therapy, implantable devices, drug delivery systems, gene vectors,

bionanotechnology and tissue engineering. http://www.journals.elsevier.com/biomaterials/

Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces IF 4.152 http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/09277765

Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces is an international journal devoted to fundamental and applied research on colloid and

interfacial phenomena in relation to systems of biological origin, having particular relevance to the medical, pharmaceutical,

biotechnological, food and cosmetic fields.

Each Editor of Colloids and Surfaces B has specific fields of expertise. To ensure a smooth and rapid refereeing process,

please submit your article to the Editor related to the topic of your research (you can select the correct editor in the drop down

menu in our online submission system:http://ees.elsevier.com/colsub):

John Brash: •Interactions of biomolecules (proteins, enzymes, peptides, polysaccharides, DNA) at the solid-solution and air-

solution interfaces; •Surface/interfacial interactions of tissue and blood; Biomaterials development and interfacial properties;

•Drug delivery/controlled release

Henk Busscher: •Physico-chemical mechanisms of microbial adhesion, biofilm formation and tissue cell interaction to

surfaces; •Microbial adhesion and biofilm formation; •Role of surface characteristics, surface modification and protein

adsorption on microbial adhesion and biofilm formation; •Physico-chemical mechanisms providing biolubrication to surfaces

Hong Chen: •Surface modification including structured surfaces; •Biocompatible materials; •Anti-fouling materials;

•Bio-detection/bio-imaging materials; •Interactions of biomolecules and cells at interfaces.

Dganit Danino: •Self-assembly and molecular assemblies (proteins, polymers, peptides, surfactants), •Structure of biological

fluids, •Drug delivery vehicles at nano and meso scales, •1D structures - fibrils, ribbons, nanotubes, •Milk proteins

Submissions that: (1) deal solely with biological phenomena and do not describe the physico-chemical or colloid-chemical

background and/or mechanism of the phenomena, and (2) deal solely with colloid/interfacial phenomena and do not have

appropriate biological content or relevance, are outside the scope of the journal and will not be considered for publication.

The journal publishes regular research papers, reviews, short communications and invited perspective articles, called

BioInterface Perspectives. The BioInterface Perspective provide researchers the opportunity to review their own work, as well

as provide insight into the work of others that inspired and influenced the author. Regular articles should have a maximum

total length of 6,000 words. In addition, a (combined) maximum of 8 normal-sized figures and/or tables is allowed (so for

instance 3 tables and 5 figures). For multiple-panel figures each set of two panels equates to one figure. Short

communications should not exceed half of the above. It is required to give on the article cover page a short statistical

summary of the article listing the total number of words and tables/figures.
