A brit kormány titkos archívumának egyik dokumentumából az derült ki, hogy 1956-ban az angolok azt tervezték, hogy Chaplin megkapja a lovagi címet. Az amerikai kormány azonban nem értett vele egyet, mivel úgy vélte: Chaplin nem lehet az erények példaképe, még kevésbé erkölcsi referencia. A színész-rendezô több mint 40 évig élt az Egyesült Államokban, de hivatalos körökben soha nem örvendett népszerûségnek. Többszöri házasságkötéseit nem nézte jó szem-mel a puritánnak mutatkozó ország. Kommunista-szimpátiával is megvádolták a McCarthyzmus éveiben. Majd 1953-ban adócsalással gyanúsították és meg-vonták tôle a tartózkodási engedélyt.

From one of the secret archives of the British government, it turns out that in 1956, the English were planning to dub Chaplin a knight. However, the American government disagreed, arguing that Chaplin could not be an example of virtues, and even less a moral reference point. The actor / producer lived in the United States for more than fourty years, but was never popular in formal circles. The apparently Puritan country did not appreciate his multiple marriages. He was even accused of sympathizing with Communists during the McCarthyist years. Later, in 1953, he was accused of tax evasion and his residence permit was revoked.

A Lhaszában tartózkodó magyarokat tegnap a nyári palotában fogadta a dalai láma. Sûrû erdôn kellett keresztül hajtanunk, amíg elérkeztünk a díszes épület-csoporthoz, ahol a lámák sorfala között jutottunk be a fiatal istenkirály fogadó-szobájába. A dalai láma rendkívül melegen fogadott bennünket. Vajas sütemé-nyekkel és teával kínált, érdeklôdött az út nehézségeirôl, s válaszolt kérdéseinkre. Kijelentette, hogy Tibet békés felszabadítása óta gyökeres és kedvezô válto-zások történtek a tibeti nép életében. Most lehetôvé vált, hogy Tibet átugorja a kapitalista fejlôdési fokot és egyenesen szocialista társadalommá fejlôdjék. „Addig azonban még sok nehézséget kell legyôzni” – tette hozzá.

We had to cross a thick forest to reach the decorative building complex, where we crossed a row of lamas and entered the young deity’s reception room. The Dalai Lama greeted us very warmly. He offered us pastry and tea, asked us about the difficulties we encountered on our journey, and answered our questions. He stated that since the peaceful liberation of Tibet, the lives of the Tibetan people have changed radically and favorably. It has now become possible for Tibet to skip the Capitalist phase of development and to take a shortcut to Socialism. “Until then, however, there are still many obstacles we must face,” he added.

1956. november 22–december 8. között Melbourne-ben rendezték meg a XVI. Olimpiát. A magyar forradalom leverése miatt a megnyitón, a magyar küldöttség fekete zászlóval vonult fel. Az otthoni események egyébként is beárnyékolták a mieink szereplését, számosan tudásuk alatt szerepeltek, de így is 9 arany-, 10 ezüst- és 7 bronzérmet nyertek. Sok kiváló magyar sportoló a játékok után külföldön maradt.

The 16th Olympics were held in Melbourne from November 22nd to December 8th, 1956. Due to the crushing of the revolution in Hungary, the Hungarian delegation arrived at the opening with a black flag. Even though the events back home overshadowed our athletes’ performances, and a number of them performed worse than expected, they still managed to win 9 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze medals. Several outstanding Hungarian athletes remained abroad after the games.

Melbourne-i Olimpia. 1956-ban Ausztrália lett a házigazda, ám a szigorú állatkarantén-törvény értelmében a lóversenyeket nem rendezhették Auszt-ráliában. Így az olimpiát elôször június 10-én Stockholmban, másodszor november 22-én Melbourne-ben nyitották meg. Ebben az évben fordult elô elôször és utoljára, hogy két ország rendezzen olimpiát.Rengeteg politikai bojkott zavarta meg a versenyeket, a szuezi válság és Magyarország szovjet lerohanása miatt is.

Melbourne Olympics. Australia was the host in 1956, but due to strict animal quarantine laws, horse-races could not be held in Australia. Therefore the opening ceremony was held first in Stockholm on June 10th, then in Melbourne on November 22nd. This was the first and last time that the olympic games were held in two countries.The games were disturbed by a lot of political boycotting due to the Suez Crisis and the overrunning of Hungary by the Soviets.

Gamel Abden Nasszer, Egyiptom új elnöke nemzetivé nyilvánítja (államosítja) az angol-francia tulajdonú Szuezi-csatornát, mely létfontosságú vízi út a Földközi- és Vörös-tenger között. Nagy-Britannia erôsen ellenzi ezt. Nasszer akkor dönt így, miután NB és az USA visszautasította, hogy pénzzel támo-gassa a nílusi asszuáni gát megépítését (ez felével növelte volna Egyiptom megmûvelhetô területeit + áramot is termelhetett volna). Késôbb a gátat szovjet segítséggel építik meg.

Gamel Abden Nasser, Egypt’s new president nationalised the English and French-owned Suez Canal, a vital shipping route between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Great Britain strongly opposed the decision. Nasser took the step after GB and the USA refused to give financial support for the construction of the Assuan Dam (which would have doubled Egypt’s irrigable land and would have produced electricity). The dam was built afterwards with Soviet help.

Legelsô bajnoki címünk a Melbourne-i olimpia nyolcadik napján született, ekkor az Urányi János, Fábián László kajakkettôs nagy küzdelemben gyôzött a 10 ezer méteres versenyben. December elsején Papp László feltette a koronát amatôr teljesítményére, s harmadik olimpiáján harmadik elsôségét érte el, megvédve az ökölvívó nagyváltósúly aranyát.

Our first title was won on the eighth day of the Melbourne Olympics, when the two paddler team of János Urányi and László Fábián won a tight race on 10 thousand meters. On the 1st of December, László Papp topped off his amateur performance with the third gold medal on his third olympic games, thus defending his title for light middleweight.

Here we can see the three-time olympic champion László Papp places the cowboy belt he brought from Melbourne around his son’s waist.

Teljesül a budai háziasszonyok kívánsága: szerda délután, július 20.-án meg-nyílt a Batthyány téri újjáépített vásárcsarnok, amely a háború alatt megrongá-lódott, s amelynek falai között az utóbbi években autójavító mûhely mûködött. A csarnok, melynek újjáépítése és berendezése mintegy hárommilió forintba került, egyike a fôváros legkorszerûbb vásárcsarnokjainak.

The wish of Buda housewives has come true: on Wednesday afternoon on July 20th, the rebuilt market hall on Batthyány Square was opened to the public. It was damaged during the war, and served as an automobile repair shop in recent years. The hall, the rebuilding and furnishing of which cost three million forints, is one of our most modern market halls.

The creators “ran in” single and two-person lounger convertible water bicycles on the Balaton.This new sport equipment will definitely be a success in the summer months, as the National Council of Trade Unions holiday resorts will be already stocked in July.

Tegnap délután bûnös személyek aljas támadást intéztek az IL-2 budapest-szombathelyi utasszállító repülôgép személyzete és utasai ellen. Kényszer alkalmazásával átvették a repülôgép vezetését és eltérve a menetiránytól Nyugat-Németországba vitték a gépet.

Yesterday afternoon, criminal persons launched a vile attack against the passengers and crew of the IL-2 Budapest-Szombathely passenger plane. They hijacked the plane and rerouted it, taking it to West Germany.

The pictures were taken on July 21, 1956, when the passengers and pilot of the hijacked plane arrived home.

Gide, Guehenno, Malraux and Chamson often had discussions here, but surrealist artists and thinkers such as Simone de Beauvoir and Jean Paul Sartre, as well as young writers like Ernest Hemingway also visited the place. Albert Camus and Pablo Picasso were also frequent guests. This is where Paul Eluard introduced Dora Maar to Picasso. Az egykori útikönyv író Warren Bayley („Doc”) tulajdonában volt egy kicsi de nyereséges kaliforniai motelhálózat, Hacienda néven. 1955-ben Bayley három üzlettársával megkezde a Hacienda Hotel és kaszinó építését a Las Vegas Boulevard-on. 1956 közepére építette meg Bayley a Hacienda hotel részlegét. A Hacienda kaszinója végül 1957 elején nyílt meg.

Warren “Doc” Bayley, former travel writer, owned a small but profitable chain of motels under the name “Hacienda” in California. In 1955 Bayley and three parnters started building the Hacienda Hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Boulevard. Bayley completed the hotel section of the Hacienda in mid-1956. The Hacienda’s casino finally opened in early 1957.

Leo Valentin, a 37 éves francia madárember – aki azzal kísérletezett, hogy emberi erôvel mûködô repülô szerkezetet konstruáljon – Liverpool felett 3000 méteres magasságból lezuhant. Leo Valentin, the 37-year-old bird man (who was trying to construct a human-powered flying machine) fell from a height of 3000 meters above Liverpool. Valentin jumped out of the aircraft with wooden wings, but hit the side of the plane. This destroyed his left wing, and the bird man fell to his death.

1956-ban Picasso új, nagyméretû, 90 négyzetméteres pannó megalkotására készül. A pannó az UNESCO jövôre felavatandó párizsi székházát díszíti majd, valamint ugyanebben az évben Henri-Georges Clouzot megrendezi a „Picasso rejtélye” címû dokumentumfilmet, amely 1956-ban a Cannes-i filmfesztiválon a zsûri különdíját is elnyerte. A francia kormány 1984-ben nemzeti kinccsé nyilvánította ezt a filmet.

In 1956, Picasso is preparing for creation of a large, 90 square meter grand panneau. The grand panneau will decorate the Paris seat of UNESCO, which is to be opened next year. In the same year, Henri-Georges Clouzot produces the documentary “The Mystery of Picasso”, which won the special award of the jury at the Cannes film festival in 1956. The French government declared the movie a national treasure.

(Kenyér, szerelem, és...) címû filmje premierjén is részt vesz, valamint tipikus turistaként felmászik az Eiffel toronyra és több butikot, üzletet is meglátogat – köztük a Cartiert is. Sophia travels by train from Brussels to Paris and stays for a few days in “The Light City”. She takes part in the premier of her movie “Pane, amore e...” (Bread, love and...), and also acts like a typical tourist and climbs the Eiffel Tower and visits several boutiques and shops, among others, the Cartier. This is where the picture was taken, when she ecstatically admires the Cartier “star pearl”. Though she didn’t buy anything in the shop, the jeweller gave her a bronze Eiffel Tower as a present.

Joszip Broz-Tito jugoszláv köztársasági elnök feleségével szombaton éjfélkor hivatalos látogatásra Franciaországba utazott. Tito elnök hatnapos francia- országi látogatása idején René Coly köztársasági elnök vendége lesz.

Tito elnök elutazása elôtt nyilatkozatot adott ki a Tanjug és az AFP hírszolgálati iroda kérésére. Kijelentette: „Hiszem, hogy Franciaország képviselôivel folytatandó tárgyalásaink sikeresek és hasznosak lesznek annál is inkább, mert franciaországi látogatásunk olyan idôben történik, amikor szerte a világon úrrá vált az a vélemény, hogy kizárólag közvetlen érintkezések és eszmecserék útján küszöbölhetôk ki a nézeteltérések és ily módon látogatásunk hozzájárul a kölcsönös jobb megértéshez is.”


Yugoslavian President Josip Broz Tito and his wife travelled to France on an official visit at midnight, Saturday. During President Tito’s six day visit to France, he will be the guest of President René Coly.

Prior to his departure, President Tito made an announcement at the request of Tanjug and the AFP news agency. He declared: “I believe that our talks with representatives of France will be successful and useful. All the more so because our visit to France is at a time when the idea is spreading worldwide that misunderstandings can only be avoided by direct contact and exchange of views. In this way, our visit promotes mutual understanding.”

A jelenleg Hollandiában élô magyar származású Ata Kando (Görög Etelka) 1956-ban, a levert forradalom után, menekülôk ezreit fényképezte az osztrák- magyar határ szabad oldalán. Még abban az évben megjelentette azt a fotó-albumot, melyben a menekülôk fényképei szerepelnek, s a teljes bevételt (fél millió holland forintot) a hontalanok megsegítésére ajánlotta fel.

Ata Kando (1913)From the Refugees series

A native of Hungary, Ata Kando (Etelka Görög) has lived for many years in the Netherlands. In 1956, after the defeat of the Hungarian revolution, she photographed thousands of refugees as they arrived in Austria. That same year, she published a photographic album containing her photographs of the refugees, donating all proceeds (half a million Dutch guilders) to the homeless refugees.
