Faults
Faults are declared as either present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain context and havedisappeared since, or whether they remain present but have not been diagnosed within the current context).
The present orstored status of faults should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is switched onafter the + after ignition feed (without any system components being active).
For a present fault, apply the procedure described in the Interpretation of faults section.
For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and apply the instructions in the Notes section.
If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. Deal with the fault
If the fault is not confirmed, check: the electrical lines which correspond to the fault, the connectors for these lines (for oxidation, bent pins, etc.), the resistance of the component detected as faulty, the condition of the wires (melted or split insulation, wear).
Conformity check
The aim of the conformity check is to check data that does not produce a fault on the diagnostic tool because thedata is inconsistent. Therefore, this stage is used to:
carry out fault finding on faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customercomplaint.
check that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault recurring after repairs.
This section gives the fault finding procedures for statuses and parameters and the conditions for checking them.
If a status is not behaving normally or a parameter is outside the permitted tolerance values, consult thecorresponding fault finding page.
Customer complaints - Fault finding chart
If the test with the diagnostic tool is OK but the customer complaint is still present, the fault should be processed bycustomer complaint.
A synopsis of the general procedure to follow is providedon the following page in the form of a flow chart.

FAULT FINDING PROCEDURE (continued)
Wiring check
Fault finding problemsDisconnecting the connectors and/or manipulating the wiring harness may temporarily remove the cause of a fault.Electrical measurements of voltage, resistance and insulation are generally correct, especially if the fault is notpresent when the analysis is made (stored fault).
Visual inspectionLook for damage under the bonnet and in the passenger compartment.Carefully check the fuses, insulators and wiring harness routing.Look for signs of oxidation.
Tactile inspectionWhile manipulating the wiring harness, use the diagnostic tool to note any change in fault status from stored topresent.Make sure that the connectors are properly locked.Apply light pressure to the connectors.Twist the wiring harness. If there is a change in status, try to locate the source of the fault.
Inspection of each componentDisconnect the connectors and check the appearance of the clips and tabs, as well as the crimping (no crimping onthe insulating section).Make sure that the clips and tabs are properly locked in the sockets.Check that no clips or tabs have been dislodged during connection.Check the clip contact pressure using an appropriate model of tab.
Resistance checkCheck the continuity of entire lines, then section by section.Look for a short circuit to earth, to + 12 V or to another wire.If a fault is detected, repair or replace the wiring harness.

5. FAULT FINDING LOG
You will always be asked for this log: when requesting technical assistance from Techline, for approval requests when replacing parts for which approval is mandatory,
to be attached to monitored parts for which reimbursement is requested. The log is needed for warrantyreimbursement, and enables better analysis of the parts removed.
6. SAFETY ADVICE
Safety rules must be observed during any work on a component to prevent any damage or injury: make sure that the battery is properly charged to avoid damaging the computers with a low load, Use the proper tools.
IMPORTANT
IMPORTANTAny fault on a complex system requires thorough fault finding with the appropriate tools. TheFAULT FINDING LOG, which should be completed during the procedure, enables you to keep
track of the procedure which is carried out. It is an essential document when consulting themanufacturer.
IT IS THEREFORE MANDATORY TO FILL OUT A FAULT FINDING LOG EACH TIME FAULT FINDINGIS CARRIED OUT.

POWER ASSISTED STEERING
Fault finding - System operation
GENERAL OPERATION
On this vehicle, the steering system is power-assisted by an electric motor attached to the steering column.
The driver's action is relayed by a torque sensor, which measures the force applied to the steering, and a steeringcolumn angle sensor. Assistance is given by an electric motor which applies more or less torque to the steeringcolumn, in one direction or the other.
A computer controls this assistance according to several vehicle environment parameters, including the vehiclespeed.
EPAS ALSO OFFERS THE FOLLOWING:
Active recall:This function is made necessary by the design of the front axle of vehicles with electric power assisted steering. It isused to bring the steering wheel back to the straight-ahead position when the vehicle is moving slowly (but notstationary). This function is normal on hydraulic power steering vehicles or vehicles without assistance. This function cannot be deactivated by the diagnostic tool.
This feature is inactive when the steering wheel angle is not available (ET020 Programming steering wheel anglesensor for STATUS 1, STATUS 2 and STATUS 3).
Lock torque limit:This function limits the assistance torque when the steering wheel is held at full lock with considerable effort, whenthe vehicle is stationary or travelling at a speed less than 3 mph (5 km/h). The purpose of this function is to limitoverheating of the electric power assisted steering motor.
Note:
When the computer detects a fault, the level of assistance can be modified depending on how serious the fault is.An incorrect or absent vehicle speed signal results in assistance equal to that provided at 60 mph (100 km/h)without active return. The EPAS sends a Steering wheel anglesignal to the ESP computer.

STEERING WHEEL ANGLE DRIFT COMPENSATION
NOTES None.
This parameter shows the correction of the angle value, implemented automatically by the EPAS computer. Whendriving, if the steering wheel angle in the straight-ahead driving position is not 0, this parameter varies (offset fromthe steering wheel angle value).
If the value of the parameter is different to 0 d ( 10 d), check the value of parameterPR121 Steering wheelangle, with the wheels set straight-ahead, ifPR121 > 10 d program the steering wheel angle using commandVP004 Steering wheel angle sensor programming (see Configuration and programming, section C).IfPR121 < 10 dand the vehicle is fitted with ESP, place the vehicle on a geometry test bench (front axle testbench). Position the vehicle wheels in the straight line driving position (steering centre point).
Program the steering wheel angle using command VP004 Steering wheel angle sensor programming (seeConfiguration and programming).

SETPOINT FOR CURRENT ABSORBED BY THE MOTOR
NOTES None.
ParameterPR013 indicates the electrical power (strength) setpoint sent by the EPAS computer to the steeringmotor as a function of the torque applied to the steering wheel.ParameterPR012 indicates the electrical power actually consumed by the EPAS motor.
These two parameters are positive when the steering wheel is turned to the right and negative when turned to theleft.
The value of parameterPR013 Motor power setpoint should be almost equal to the value of parameterPR012Power absorbed by the motor. If the parameters do not correspond with the values shown in the Conformity check, or if they are not equal, refer

LEVEL OF ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
NOTES None.
In normal operation, this parameter shows the steering assistance value which depends on the level of motorprotection. When the user holds the steering at full lock for more than 0.5 seconds, assistance drops to 52 %.
This parameter can fall below 100 % when the EPAS system is heated during repeated manoeuvres; this storesfault DF001 Motor thermal protection if the heating lasts longer than 1 minute.
Note:The level of assistance can be degraded according to system faults (see Fault summary table).

STEERING WHEEL ANGLE
NOTES None.
This parameter shows the steering wheel position in relation to the programmed zero (performed by commandVP004 Steering wheel angle sensor programming). This parameter is positive to the right and negative to the left.
If the angle remains at 3696, either: the steering wheel angle programming has not been carried out (ET020 Steering wheel angle programming
is STATUS 1 orSTATUS 2), or the steering wheel is outside the range 120 d (ET020 Steering wheel angle programming is STATUS 3),
when the APC is switched on, therefore the angle is valid; the angle is STATUS 4 only if the steering wheel is
within the range 120 d. As the sensor's coverage is not complete, it needs to come within this zone to detectits position.
Thus, when the APC is switched on, if the steering wheel is not within the range 120 d then the angle is invalid(ET020 Steering wheel angle programming is STATUS 3). Simply rotating the steering wheel so that it is in the 120 d range will allow a valid angle to be found (ET020 Steering wheel angle programming is STATUS 4),when the EPAS is operating correctly, the sensor is faulty DF038 Angle sensor.
If the angle remains at 3696, with action on the steering wheel and status ET020 Steering wheel angleprogramming is STATUS 4, contact the Techline.
If the parameter does not correspond to the values shown in the Conformity check, place the vehicle on ageometry test bench (front axle bench). Position the vehicle wheels in the straight line driving position (steeringcentre point).Program the steering wheel angle using command VP004 Steering wheel angle sensor programming (seeConfiguration and programming).
