Steauawas founded on 7 June 1947, at the initiative ofseveral officers of the Romanian Royal House and withfull support from the communist government. The estab-lishment took place following a decree signed by GeneralMihail Lascr, High Commander of theRomanian RoyalArmy. The clubs first name wasASA Bucureti(Asoci-aia Sportiv a Armatei BucuretiArmy Sports Associa-tion). It was formed as asports societywith seven initialsections, including football, coached byColoman Braun-

Bogdan.[1] ASA was renamed CSCA (Clubul SportivCentral al Armatei Central Sports Club of the Army) in1948 and CCA (Casa Central a Armatei Central House

    of the Army) in 1950.[1]

In 1949, CSCA won its first trophy, theRomanian Cup,defeatingCSU Cluj21 in the final. Under the nameofCCA, the club managed to win threeChampionshiptitles in a row in 1951, 1952 and 1953, along withtheir first Championship-Cup Double in 1951. Dur-ing the 1950s, the so-called CCA Golden Team be-came nationally famous.[2] In 1956, thenational teamof Romania, composed exclusively of CCA players, took on Yugoslavia in Belgrade and won 10. Dur-

ing the same year, CCA, coached byIlie Savu, was thefirst Romanian team to enterprise a tournament in Eng-land where they achieved noteworthy results against thelikes ofLuton Town,Arsenal,Sheffield WednesdayandWolverhampton Wanderers.[3]

At the end of 1961CCAchanged its name once again toCSA Steaua Bucureti (Clubul Sportiv al Armatei SteauaArmy Sports Club Steaua). The clubs new name trans-lates The Starand was adopted because of thepresence ofared star, symbol of most East-European Army clubs, ontheir crest. A poor period of almost twodecades followedin which the club claimed only three championships

(196768,197576,197778). Instead, the team wonnine national cup trophies, for which matter they gainedthe nickname of cup specialists.[4] Also during this pe-riod, on 9 April 1974, Steauas current ground,StadionulGhencea, was inaugurated with a friendly matchopposingOFK Beograd.[5]

Subsequently, they were the first Ro-manian team to make it to a European Cup final, whichthey won in front ofBarcelonaonpenalties(20 thanksto goalkeeper Helmuth Duckadam succeeding to saveall four penalties taken by the Spaniards), after a goal-less draw. Steaua therefore became the first Eastern-

ropean football for the rest of the decade, managing onemore European Cup semifinal in198788and one moreEuropeanCupfinalin 1989 (lost40to Milan). This hap-pened next to their four additional national titles (198586, 198687, 198788, 198889) and four national cups(198485,198687,198788,198889). Furthermore,

from June 1986 to September 1989, Steaua ran a record104-match undefeated streak in the championship, set-ting a world record for that time and a European one stillstanding.[6]

TheRomanian Revolutionled the country towards a freeopen market and, subsequently, several players of the1980s team left for other clubs in the West. After ashort pull-back, a quick recovery followed and Steauamanaged a six consecutive championship streak between199293 and 199798 to equalise the 1920sperformanceofChinezul Timioara[7] and also three more cups in199596, 199697 and 199899. At international level,

they also managed to make it to the UEFA ChampionsLeaguegroup stage three years in a row between199495and 199697. In 1998, the football club separatedfromCSA Steauaand changed their name for the finaltimeto FC Steaua Bucureti (Fotbal Club Steaua Foot-ball Club Steaua),[8] being led by Romanian businessmanViorel Punescu. Punescu performed poorly as a presi-dent and soon the club was plunged into debt. [9] GeorgeBecali, another businessman, was offered the position ofvice-president, in hope that he would invest money in theclub. Becali eventually purchased the majority share in2002 and turned the governing company public in Jan-

    uary 2003.[10]

Because of his controversial character, he has been con-tested by the majority of Steaua fans.[11] The team qual-ified for theUEFA Cupgroup stage in the200405sea-son and further on became the first Romanian team tomake it to the European football spring since1993(alsoSteauas performance). The next season, they reachedthe UEFA Cup semi-finals in200506, where they wereeliminated byMiddlesbroughthanks to a last minute goaland thereafter qualified for the followingUEFA Champi-ons Leagueseasons after a ten-year break. In the 200708seasonSteauahavequalifiedagaininthegroupstageof

UEFA Champions League. Nationally, they gained twotitles in200405and200506and theRomanian SuperCupin 2006, the latter being the clubs 50th trophy in its59-year history.[12]

In 2013, Steaua won its 24th national title, also reach-ing theUEFA Champions Leaguegroup stage. They re-peated the same performance next year, in 2014, winningthe 25th championship.

TheMinistry of National Defensetook Steaua to court in2014, claiming that the Romanian Armywere the rightfulowners of the logo of Steaua Bucharest.[13] TheSupremeCourtfound in the armys favour, and on 3 December

2014 stripped the football club of its badge. [13] Steauawere forced to play their next home game, againstCSM

Studenesc Iai, without it on the stadium scoreboard.[13]

The club unveiled a new badge in January 2015, an eight-sided star containing the letters FCSB,[14] and issued astatement to the effect that they had reached an agree-ment with the Ministry of National Defense that wouldallow them to retain the name Steaua Bucureti and the

    colours.[15]

    2 Crest and colours

ASA Bucureti was founded bythe Royal Army on 7 June1947,[1] at which date the club had no official crest. Dur-ing their first season, 194748, Steaua wore yellow andred striped shirts with blue shorts, to symbolize Roma-nias tricolour flag.[16] Starting with the following seasonand with the Armys change of identity from the RoyalArmy to the Peoples Army, the yellow was gradually

given up, so that the official colours remained, up to thisday, the red and the blue.

As communists assumed total control of the country on30 December 1947,[17] the Royal Army was transformedinto the Peoples Army and ASA automatically with it.Being inspired by theRed Army, the new Ministry ofDefence decided to create a crest for the club, along withthe change of name to CSCA, consisting in an A-labeledred star(symbol of the Red Army) on a blue disc.

Two years later, the change of name to CCA brought withit a new crest consisting of the same red star labeled CCA

surrounded by a crown of laurel. The all-present star mo-tif on the crest finally had its saying over the new nameofSteauaas up 1961. It was opted for a badge which, re-designed, remains up to this day theclubs symbol: the redandblue striped background with a golden star in themid-dle, to symbolize to Romanian tricolour flag. The shapefor the emblem was redesigned in 1974, once the teammoved toStadionul Ghencea.

Following theRomanian Revolution, the Army decidedto break all links to the defunct communist regime, so, in1991,CSA Steaua had a last change of crest with an eaglealso present on theMinistry of Defencecoat of arms and

also on Romanias. As FC Steaua appeared in 1998, theclub added two yellow stars on top of the CSA Steauabadge signifying its 20 titles of champions won, alongwith theFotbal Clubspecification.

2003 was the year of the last change of crest, decided bythe new Board of Administration run byGeorge Becali, which was a return to the old emblem of 19741991, re-designed with the two yellow stars on top.

Steaua has never had a standard playing kit. However, themost widely used throughout time was the combinationof red shirts, blue shorts and red socks. Other variantshave been all-red, all-blue and also shirts in vertical red

and blue stripes during the 1960s and 1970s. Other kitcolours have very rarely been used. Exceptions were the1986 European Cup Finalin which Steaua wore, for the

After a second renovation, in 2006, which included re-furbishing the turf, Ghencea[27] was able to hostUEFAChampions Leagueevents, being a third category arenaaccording to theUEFA classification system.[28] Lately, there have been talks for increasing the capacity to either45,000 or 60,000.[29]

andRapid Bucureti, with 9%.[31] The largest concentra-

tion of fans are inBucharest, notably in areas adjacent tothe arena, covering the whole southern half of Bucharest,a city geographically divided by theDmbovia River.[32]

Also, the club has an important fan base inside the coun-try, where several towns are renowned for counting vastmajorities of Steaua supporters, and outside the borders, among Romanian emigrants.

The SteauaUltrasmovement began in 1995, when thebases of Armata Ultra (AU), the first Ultras groupfrom Bucharest (and second in Romania afterPolitehnicaTimioara'sCommando Viola Ultra Curva Sud),[33] wereset. The group quickly reached an impressive number

of members, but, in 2001, they dissolved due to inter-nal problems. Currently Steauas supporters are dividedinto several groups, some of them being located at thePeluza Nord(North End) (Titan Boys, Nucleo, Insur-genii 1998, Skins 1996, Combat, Armata 47 Vest), whilesome other ones taking their place at the Peluza Sud(South End) (Vacarm, Glas, E.R.A., Hunters, Outlaws,Shadows, Roosters, T.K., Tinerii Sudisti). Several im-portant groups such as Stil Ostil, Ultras, Banda Ultra' andSouth Boys retired from attending Steauas matches dueto the clubs constant abuses towards them and, mainly,to the current ownership of Steaua.[34]

More recently, as of 2006, the supporters have formedtheir own official association, called AISS(Asociaia In-dependent a Suporterilor StelitiSteaua Supporters In-dependent Association). AISS was formed as a legalentitywith its stated goals ofprotecting the interests and imageof Steaua supporters, as well asidentifying and promotingthe clubs perennial values.[35]

A heavy debated topic about the fans is the one re-lated toracism. Stemmed from their rivalry withRapidBucureti, whose fans are often envisioned as Romaniethnics,[36] the issue degenerated on certain situations inseveral incidents between factions of supporters of Steaua

and Rapid.[37] Also, theUEFA Champions League 200506 qualifying match againstShelbourne,resultedinaone-matchday pitch suspension for Steaua during the same

European season, after racial chants were heard from thecrowd.[38]

Lately, crowd turbulence has been one of the clubs mainproblems. During the last three seasons, 11Liga Imatch-day suspensions and one in theUEFA Cuphave been dic-

tated against the Ghencea-based club out of reasons suchas crowd trouble, racial chants or torch lighting.

In 2009, UEFA ordered Steaua to play two home gamesof the Europa Leaguebehind closed doorsdue to theirfans displaying racist banners in a second qualifyinground match against Hungarianside jpest.[39] Three fur-ther incidents occurred in the 201415 season, with theclub fined and ordered to play further games in an emptystadium after displays of racist banners in games againstDynamo Kyiv, Ludogorets Razgrad and Strmsgodset.[40]

The second most important rivalry is the one withRapidBucureti. Several matches in the last years betweenSteaua and Rapid have also ended in serious clashes be-tween fans.[37] Rivalry has become even fiercer since

Steaua outpassed Rapid in an all-Romanian quarter fi-nal of theUEFA Cup 200506season. The local sportsnewspapers said that the 2 teams were linked up in thisquarter final bythe line of the number 41 tram which linkstheGhencea Stadiumto theValentin Stnescu Stadium.

Milder and historical rivalries are also with non-Bucharest teams such as Universitatea Craiova,Politehnica Timioara, Petrolul Ploieti, CFR Cluj,UniversitateaCluj andarecentonewithAstraGiurgiu.[45]

    7 Ownership

Steaua has always been known as the club of theRomanian Army, who founded it in 1947 as asports so-ciety.[1] The Army continues to own the society, calledCSA Steaua Bucuretiat the moment.

The football department however, in order to complywithUEFArules, separated and turned private in 1998,owned and financed by a non-profit organization calledAFC Steaua Bucureti, chaired by businessman ViorelPunescu.[46]

In January 2003, the club turned public, under the leader-

ship of investor and current politician George Becali, whohad already purchased 51% of the societys shares andlater on acquired the rest to become owner of the club.At present Becali has no official link to the club, as hegradually renounced his shares. However, the facts thatthe current shareholders, that include several nephews ofhis,[47] are people loyal to him and that he is still in chargeof Steaua are obvious.[48] An unofficial explanation forthis situation is represented by the heavy amount of un-paid taxes added up by the former governing company,AFC Steaua Bucureti, whose payment towards the taxauthority was avoided this way by transferring its assetsto the new-formed company, with the old association go-ing on liquidation bankruptcy.[49]

George Becaliis currently a highly controversial person, whose involvement in the life of the club and the teamhas often been described as authoritarian and dictatorialby both the media and the fans.[50]

    8 Steaua in popular culture

As Steaua is currently the most popular football team inRomania,[31] a good number of musicians or TV and film

directors have inspired themselves from ideas linked tothe Ghencea-based club. Popular reference, however, ap-peared only after theRomanian Revolution, as before,

mass-media programmes were mostly being controlledby the former communist regime. The 2002 Romanianfilm Furiadepicts scenes in which Steaua andDinamogangs of supporters are fighting on the streets after a di-rect match between the two sides.[51] Prima TVcom-edy showMondeniioften airs sketches parodying Steaua

ownerGeorge Becali, the players and other representa-tives around the club.[52] Pro TVseriesLa blocaired anepisode in which characters Nelu and Costel are displayedas representing Steaua in a parking lot match against twoother neighbours representing Dinamo.

Several other examples from music can be attributed asSteaua-related. Apart from club anthems played through-out time byMarcel Pavel,Bere Gratis,Gaz pe Foc, an al-bumwasreleasedin2006asacompilationby Mircea Vin-til,Chicanos,Bogdan Dimaand several other artists.[53]

Deliktand Ultrasare two formerhip hopbands whosemembers ranked the defunct Armata Ultra' brigade and

would always show up displaying fan materials. Also,Voltaj, in their song 'MSD2', make reference to the fansin the linePoi s fii cine sau poi fi stelist(You can be adog[54] or you can be a Steaua fan).[55]

One of the most famous pop-culture references about theclub is the association with Scooter's song Maria, firstsung spontaneously in 2003 by the fans in Peluza Nord af-ter the team would score. Ever since, it has been adoptedas an unofficial club anthem and is being played at thestadium at every match, sung together by the support-ers. Nonetheless, the song is beginning to lose popularity, mainly because it has become too commercial and many

fans do not feel bonded with it any more.[56]
