When Richard Brown sailed out of Long Beach in California, there were no clouds in the sky.Richard was a single man with no relatives and he didnt tell his friends about his days fishingtrip. In the afternoon, the weather changed. There was a lot of wind and rain and some big waves hit hissmall boat. After the storm, his radio and engine did not work. In the boat, Richard had somemineral water, some biscuits, some peanuts and some chocolate. After three days, he had no food

and no water!Richard collected rainwater and caught fish. He used the fish to catch birds. Then he made a firefrom parts of the boat to cook the birds. His television had solar power and he watched a lot of hisfavourite videos! He had twenty videos on his boat. Finally, after four months, a US Navy boat rescued him near the coast of Costa Rica. When wearrived, he was cooking a seagull, said the captain. Richard had lost a lot of weight but he wasokay. Were there any problems? Well, said the captain his boat was a wreck and he didnt haveany money! We collected $800 to fly him home. I think hes very lucky!

    The Tower of Pisa

Everybody knows that in the city of Pisa in Italy, there is a tower that leans. However, very fewpeople know that this town has a great and glorious history.Of course, the tower itself is quite a marvel , too. It is built entirely of white marble. The walls are

4 metres thick at its base. It has eight storeys and is 55 metres high. In the tower of Pisa there is astairway which leads to the top. The people who climb these stairs to the top get a magnificentview of the city of Pisa and of the sea, which is 10 kilometres away.At the top, the tower of Pisa leans over by 5 metres. That is, if you were to stand at the top anddrop a stone to the ground it would hit 5 metres away from the wall at the bottom of the Tower. What makes it lean? Nobody really knows the answer.Of course, it wasnt supposed to lean when it was built. It was supposed to stand straight. It wasintended as a bell tower for the cathedral which is nearby and was begun in 1174 and finished in1350. The foundations of the Tower were laid in sand and this may perhaps explain why it leans.

    1. Why is the Tower of Pisa famous?

    2. How high is the Tower of Pisa?3. What makes the tower lean ?4. Why did they build the bell tower ?

Well, it all started when I decided to buy my girlfriend a sweater for her birthday. Like so manythings, it seemed a good idea at the time! I went straight into town, to one of the big departmentstores, you know, and bought her a lovely red sweater. I thought shed love it, but you never cantell, can you? She took one look at it and said, I just dont see myself in red! and that was that!So I had to take it back to the shop to change it, and this time I got her a blouse, not red, of course,

a rather nice green, actually. I gave it to her that evening, but when she took it out of the bag, sheburst into tears and said, Do you really think Im as large as that? It certainly did look rather bigwhen she held it up I must have got the wrong size. Anyway, I was going to take it back to theshop and change it, but I happened to be talking to the girl next door, and she saw the bag andasked what was in it, and when I told her, she asked to try it on. And she loved it! So I gave it toher. And when my girlfriend saw her wearing the green blouse, she refused to see me ever again. So, thats how I started going out with the girl next door!

    1. What colour was the sweater ?2. What was her opinion about the sweater ?

    3. Who did he give the present to in the end ?4. Why did his girlfriend refuse to see him anymore?

Read the text below and then answer the questions:Meals in Britain

A traditional English breakfast is a very big meal sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushroomsBut nowadays many people just have cereal with milk and sugar, or toast with marmalade, jam orhoney. Marmalade and jam are not the same! Marmalade is made from oranges and jam is madefrom other fruit. The traditional breakfast drink is tea, which many people have with cold milk. Some people have coffee, often instant coffee, which is made with just hot water. Many visitors toBritain find this coffee disgusting! For many people lunch is a quick meal. In cities there are a lot of sandwich bars, where office

workers can choose the kind of bread they want brown, white or a roll and then all sorts ofsalad and meat or fish to go with the sandwich. Pubs often serve good, cheap food, both hot andcold. School children can have a hot meal at school, but many just take a snack from home asandwich, a drink, some fruit and perhaps some crisps.Tea means two things. It is a drink and a meal! Some people have afternoon tea, withsandwiches, cakes and of course a cup of tea. Cream teas are popular. You have scones (a kind ofcake) with cream and jam.The evening meal is the main meal of the day for many people. They usually have it quite early,

between 6.00 and 8.00, and often the whole family eats together.

    1. What is the English traditional breakfast drink ?2. What do visitors think of British coffee ?3. What does a quick meal consist of ?4. What does Tea mean ?

I was asked toreturn to my car. When we arrived back at the car, I was horrified. The doors were damaged;one of the windows was smashed and the aerial was broken. I asked my mother how it hadhappened. She said that she had been eating a sandwich, when a young elephant had poked itstrunk through the open window, but she didnt remember anything after that. Richard Kemp got quite a shock last week when he went to buy a bicycle. Richard, who is 14 yearsold, needed 90 to buy the bicycle. For twelve months he saved all his pocket money tohave enough for the bike of his dreams. He worked on Saturdays, too, helping in his Dadsnewsagents.Last Saturday, he finally had the money he needed and so he went to the Olympic sports

shop. He found the model he wanted, but when he went to pay the 90, his pockets wereempty he didnt have a penny. Richard spent four hours looking everywhere for the money. He looked in the streets; he searched his bedroom, and he even went to the Police Station toask if anyone had found it.Finally, it was Richards dad who discovered the 90 in the washing machine! Just beforehe had gone out to the sports shop, Richard had changed his trousers and put on a new pair of

jeans. But, of course, he had left the money in his other trousers and they went into thewashing machine. Yesterday Richard bought his bike at last. He told us that in the future heis going to put his money in the bank, not in the washing machine!

    1. What did Richard do in order to save money for a bicycle?2. How much did the bicycle cost ?3. Where did he look for the money? ?4. Who discovered the money in the end ?

I was born with a handicap. When I say this, people usually just start laughing, not because theyenjoy being cruel, but simply because they dont take me seriously. So what is my handicap? I was

born with red hair. I hate it!Before you start yawning and saying, So what? I don't like my funny nose, or whatever, let meexplain. When people see someone with red hair, they immediately start making silly remarks like,

Hey, Carrot-top! And they go on making them, over and over again. I cant stand it. It wouldntbe so bad if the jokes were funny. But they never are!I dont mind going out when its cold and wet, but I hate going out when its hot. In fact I dreadthe summer. Other people go brown, and within days theyre showing me their Mediterranean tans. But Im either a bright pink colour and covered in freckles, or Im hiding inside, in the shade. Its sad, but when youre young like me, all you want is to be accepted, to be normal! Kelly wants to study history of art, but her local high school doesntteach it. So shes taking it on the Internet.Kentucky is one of two states in America at the moment that offer virtual high school classesto all their school students the other is Florida. This is just the beginning. Virtual schools

and universities are starting up all over the world. Some education experts think that in 20years time, therell be no more real classrooms only virtual ones.So how does virtual school work? When Kelly gets home from regular school, she logs on tothe Internet on the family computer. On the home page of her course web site she reads anymessages from her teacher and other students. On the Whats new page the teacherexplains what the next piece of work is and where to find out about the subject on theInternet. Each student has a virtual coursebook. Kelly does her work here and only she andher teacher can look at it. She uses e-mail to talk to other students on the course (no morethan 25) and her teacher. There is a text page where the teacher puts video clips, pieces oftext to read and pictures to look at. Any extra materials, such as books, are sent through the

Since then, the marathon

has been the longest race in running competitions.Todays marathon distance was first used at the 1908 Olympic Games in London. It represents thedistance from Windsor to the White City Stadium in West London which is exactly 42 km 195 m.Until 1984 only men ran the marathon at the Olympics as people said the distance was too long forwomen. black briefcases and planted them in airport waiting rooms. When the guards had a look at thebriefcase under X-ray they got even more suspicious. They saw an arrangement of batteries andcylinders that might well have been a bomb. The police came and carried the briefcase out to an unused runway where it could explode withoutdoing much damage. Then a demolition squad arrived and examined the briefcase. They didn't likethe combination lock. It could be a detonator. So they decided to stand back and blow the briefcaseopen. There was a small explosion. The case opened and all the things flew out. A tape recorder. An electric razor. A bottle of aftershave. And the pages of an unfinished manuscript, blowing inthe wind. The writer didn't blame anyone. He was even grateful to the guards for putting all the pages of hismanuscript back in order, though somewhat damaged.

Ever since people realised the Earth was just a tiny part of the universe, they have wonderedabout the existence of other intelligent life forms. Early on, many people thought thatintelligent life might be found on Mars and Venus, our two nearest planets. Now that we havesent unmanned spacecraft to these planets, we know that no intelligent life exists there. The Earths distance from the Sun makes it the only planet in our own solar system which is

capable of sustaining life. If we were nearer the Sun, there would be a thick layer of cloudaround us; this would trap heat, causing the temperature to rise. Within a short time, the Earthwould turn into a desert, completely unsuitable for life. If we were further away from the Sun,there would not be enough heat to prevent water from freezing. The polar ice caps wouldexpand, and the sea level would fall. Before long, the Earth would become an Arcticwasteland. In recent years, scientists have dismissed various claims about the existence of extraterrestrial life. Many people say that they have seen unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and believe that this is

proof that alien life must exist. Most scientists think that UFO sightings are imaginary or have arational explanation.

It was from him that Marie Tussaud learnt the art of wax modelling. In 1765 Curtius made a wax work of Madame du Barry. A cast of that mould is the oldest workcurrently on display. Tussaud created her first figure, that of Voltaire, a French philosopher and writer,

in 1777. During the French Revolution of 1789 Madame Tussaud and her uncle moulded the heads ofalmost every distinguished victim of the guillotine, including the heads of Louis XVI and MarieAntoinette. These can still be seen in the Chamber of Horrors in the exhibitions permanent home inLondons Marylebone Road. This section of the museum is one of the main attractions. When Dr Curtius died in 1794 he left his collection of waxworks to Marie.
