When Richard Brown sailed out of Long Beach in California, there were no clouds in the sky.Richard was a single man with no relatives and he didnt tell his friends about his days fishingtrip.In the afternoon, the weather changed. There was a lot of wind and rain and some big waves hit hissmall boat. After the storm, his radio and engine did not work. In the boat, Richard had somemineral water, some biscuits, some peanuts and some chocolate. After three days, he had no food

and no water!Richard collected rainwater and caught fish. He used the fish to catch birds. Then he made a firefrom parts of the boat to cook the birds. His television had solar power and he watched a lot of hisfavourite videos! He had twenty videos on his boat.Finally, after four months, a US Navy boat rescued him near the coast of Costa Rica. When wearrived, he was cooking a seagull, said the captain. Richard had lost a lot of weight but he wasokay. Were there any problems? Well, said the captain his boat was a wreck and he didnt haveany money! We collected $800 to fly him home. I think hes very lucky!

The Tower of Pisa

Everybody knows that in the city of Pisa in Italy, there is a tower that leans. However, very fewpeople know that this town has a great and glorious history.Of course, the tower itself is quite a marvel , too. It is built entirely of white marble. The walls are

4 metres thick at its base. It has eight storeys and is 55 metres high. In the tower of Pisa there is astairway which leads to the top. The people who climb these stairs to the top get a magnificentview of the city of Pisa and of the sea, which is 10 kilometres away.At the top, the tower of Pisa leans over by 5 metres. That is, if you were to stand at the top anddrop a stone to the ground it would hit 5 metres away from the wall at the bottom of the Tower.What makes it lean? Nobody really knows the answer.Of course, it wasnt supposed to lean when it was built. It was supposed to stand straight. It wasintended as a bell tower for the cathedral which is nearby and was begun in 1174 and finished in1350. The foundations of the Tower were laid in sand and this may perhaps explain why it leans.

Well, it all started when I decided to buy my girlfriend a sweater for her birthday. Like so manythings, it seemed a good idea at the time! I went straight into town, to one of the big departmentstores, you know, and bought her a lovely red sweater. I thought shed love it, but you never cantell, can you? She took one look at it and said, I just dont see myself in red! and that was that!So I had to take it back to the shop to change it, and this time I got her a blouse, not red, of course,

a rather nice green, actually. I gave it to her that evening, but when she took it out of the bag, sheburst into tears and said, Do you really think Im as large as that? It certainly did look rather bigwhen she held it up I must have got the wrong size. Anyway, I was going to take it back to theshop and change it, but I happened to be talking to the girl next door, and she saw the bag andasked what was in it, and when I told her, she asked to try it on. And she loved it! So I gave it toher. And when my girlfriend saw her wearing the green blouse, she refused to see me ever again.So, thats how I started going out with the girl next door!

At Palm Springs Airport, a writer passed through the security check and took a seat in the waitingroom. In a few minutes his flight was called and he boarded, absent-mindedly leaving the briefcase

behind. The briefcase was found and turned over to the airport security, and a guard noticed that ithad a foreign airline sticker on it.The airport authorities were suspicious because they knew about a terrorist who carried bombs in

black briefcases and planted them in airport waiting rooms. When the guards had a look at thebriefcase under X-ray they got even more suspicious. They saw an arrangement of batteries andcylinders that might well have been a bomb.The police came and carried the briefcase out to an unused runway where it could explode withoutdoing much damage. Then a demolition squad arrived and examined the briefcase. They didn't likethe combination lock. It could be a detonator. So they decided to stand back and blow the briefcaseopen. There was a small explosion. The case opened and all the things flew out. A tape recorder.An electric razor. A bottle of aftershave. And the pages of an unfinished manuscript, blowing inthe wind.The writer didn't blame anyone. The polar ice caps wouldexpand, and the sea level would fall. In 1993 Geri Halliwel, Melanie Brown, Victoria Adams and Melanie Chishom answered anadvertisement in a newspaper. Talent scouts realized that they had found a group of girls whowanted fame. The group was named Touch and when one of the group, Michelle, quit, Emma

joined as the youngest member. Emma had been a friend of Victoria since the age of ten.The relationship with their managers did not last long. The managers wanted to sack Victoriafor not being talented enough. The girls thought their managers were the ones lacking talentand sacked them instead. Michael Jordan was born in New York in February 1963, but he grew up in Wilmington,North Carolina. He wasn't a brilliant student at school. "I sometimes got into trouble," hesays, "because I didn't do my schoolwork." But he loved sports. He first played basketball inthe family's back garden. No visit to London is complete without a tour of Madame Tussauds Exhibition of Wax Works. Thiswas originally opened in Paris in 1770 by Dr Philippe Curtius, her uncle, who was a physician skilledin wax modelling. It was from him that Marie Tussaud learnt the art of wax modelling.In 1765 Curtius made a wax work of Madame du Barry. A cast of that mould is the oldest workcurrently on display. Tussaud created her first figure, that of Voltaire, a French philosopher and writer,

in 1777. During the French Revolution of 1789 Madame Tussaud and her uncle moulded the heads ofalmost every distinguished victim of the guillotine, including the heads of Louis XVI and MarieAntoinette. These can still be seen in the Chamber of Horrors in the exhibitions permanent home inLondons Marylebone Road. This section of the museum is one of the main attractions.When Dr Curtius died in 1794 he left his collection of waxworks to Marie.
