Dear Editor ,

I am writing with regards to the article 'Is the TV Dead?' that appeared in your newspaper on the 4th March. Theauthor claimed that with the rise of the Internet, the TV was becoming less and less significant in our lives.I find it very difficult to agree with this view. The TV is still the main way most of us get our entertainment at home.It offers us the chance to see top musical artists, great films and documentaries and occasionally, thanks toimportant televised events, it has the power to bring the whole nation and all ages together in a way the Internetnever could.Your article was particularly critical of the TV for the poor quality of programmes available on the many channelswe now have. It is certainly true that many of the channels offer nothing more than repeats or low budgetprogrammes. However, I would argue that the majority of content on the Internet is also of questionable quality. Iagree with the writer that it is easy to keep up-to-date with the latest news on the Internet, but I'm sure most of usstill enjoy sitting down to the News on TV in the evening just as much.The writer is correct in stating that the Internet has become our major source for research and I think this is itsmain strength. However, criticising the TV for not being as good is totally unfair. Information programmes likedocumentaries are made for their potential as entertainment not as research tools and as such will continue to bepopular with viewers.In conclusion I don't think the writer should be so quick to write the TV off. On the contrary, I think it has manymore years left in it!

Different Colours can affect us in many different ways; thats according to Verity Allen. In her new series Colourme Healthy, Verity looks at the ways colours can influence how hard we work and the choices we make. Theycan even change our emotions and even influence how healthy we are.

Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things? says Verity. Ourtoothpaste is always white or blue or maybe red. Its never green. Why not? For some reason we think that blueand white is clean, while we think of green products as being a bit disgusting. Its the same for businesses. Werespect a company which writes its name in blue or black, but we dont respect one that uses pink or orange. People who design new products can use these ideas to influence what we buy. During this four-part series, Verity studies eight different colours, two colours in each programme. She meetspeople who work in all aspects of the colour industry, from people who design food packets, to people who namethe colours of lipsticks. Some of the people she meets clearly have very little scientific knowledge to support theirideas, such as the American Colour Doctor who believes that serious diseases can be cured by the use ofcoloured lights. However, she also interviews real scientists who are studying the effects of green and red lightson mice, with some surprising results.

Overall, its an interesting show, and anyone who watches it will probably find out something new. But becauseVerity goes out of her way to be polite to everyone she meets on the series, its up to the viewers to make theirown decisions about how much they should believe.

When I opened the first Body Shop in 1976 my only object was to earn enough to feed my children. Today The

Body Shop is an international company rapidly growing all around the world. In the years since we began I havelearned a lot. Much of what I have learned will be found in this book, for I believe that we, as a company, havesomething worth saying about how to run a successful business without giving up what we really believe in.Its not a normal business book, nor is it just about my life. The message is that to succeed in business you haveto be different. Business can be fun, a business can be run with love and it can do good. .. Finally, this week's comedy, "Tomorrow's Another Day", at the Cambridge MGM cinema, is another in the longline of successes from director Peter Hamill.This one has an unusual story-line. Just imagine this: one day Mickey Style, a TV journalist, goes off to make aprogramme about an exciting film festival in Canada. On his first morning there he wakes up, the sun is shining,the birds are singing, and life just couldn't be better. He works through the day, goes to bed, wakes up the nextmorning... to find it's the same day! The same sun, the same birds singing in the same trees, the same peoplesaying and doing exactly the same things, day after day. He is caught in a place where time has simply stood still,where there will be no tomorrows.This could be very serious, but it's not. It's an extremely funny film, which made everyone, including your reviewer,laugh out loud. It has the silliest ending, and the audience loved it! Tabitha Taylor is great as the generous bankmanager - yes, really! - although Hollywood probably won't give her any prizes. So if you want to forget yourtroubles, this is the film for you.

The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well as inother countries, originated in the middle east. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the Phoneacians,a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and Gades in Spain. Intheir alphabet, the letters were represented by little pictures which represented sounds.The Phoneacian A wasaelph, which means "bull" and it was made from a little picture of a bull's head. The letter B was bethwhich meant"house", and showed the round-roofed buildings which you can still see today in Syria.The Phoneacians had contact with another nation of sailors, the Greeks, with whom they fought and traded. TheGreeks also started to use the Phoneacian alphabet. They changed the names so aelphand bethbecame alphaand beta. The shapes of the letters are the same but they have been turned sideways. A month ago I had no idea that on a Saturday afternoon in November Id be hanging 30 metres above the groundand enjoying it. Now I looked down at the river far below me, and realised why people love rock-climbing.My friend Matt and I had arrived at the Activity Centre on Friday evening. The accommodat ion wasnt wonderful,but we had everything we needed (beds, blankets, food), and we were pleased to be out of the city and in thefresh air.On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come along with two friends,Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with Amanda. We had come from various places andnone of us knew the area.We knew we were going to spend the weekend outdoors, but none of us was sure exactly how. Half of us spentthe morning caving while the others went rock-climbing and then we changed at lunchtime. Matt and I went to the

caves first. Climbing out was harder than going in, but after a good deal of pushing, we were out at last coveredin mud but pleased and excited by what wed done.

I've always been a bit of an entertainer and played the funny man. I was a part-time comedian for years, so Ilearned how to stand in front of audiences. It made me sure of myself. I like being liked and I love makingeveryone smile.I've lived in London all my life and have just moved to a larger house with my wife Clare and our two children,Jimmy and Madeleine. We spend a lot of time just singing and dancing around the house. I grew up with musicbecause my dad is the pianist, Chester Harriott - who's still playing, by the way. My working day is dividedbetween television and writing cook books, though TV takes most of my time. I spend about five days a fortnightworking on the cooking programmes I appear in. I eat all sorts of things at home but I only buy quality food. WhenI'm cooking, I experiment with whatever is in the fridge -- it's good practice for my TV series.I'm a football fan and enjoy going to matches, but I'm a home-loving person really. I don't like going to the pub butwe do go out to eat about twice a month. There's nothing better than a night at home playing with the children. Irarely go to bed before midnight. Late evening is when fresh thoughts on cooking usually come to me, so I oftenwrite or plan my programmes then. When I eventually get to bed, I have no trouble sleeping.

The battle of Bannockburn.

Robert the Bruce is one of the great heroes of Scottish history.When Robert the Bruce was king of Scotland, theEnglish king Edward II wanted to rule the whole country. However, Robert the Bruce helped the Scots to resist andto form a large army which attacked Stirling castle. King Edwards army came to help the soldiers in the castle,and the two armies met at the small town of Bannockburn on June 24, 1314.At that time the strongest part of the English army was bowmen. These bowmen, with their long bows had wonmany victories for the English in France. The Scots did not have many bowmen, as most of their army were armedwith long spears. So when the English archers attacked they could not defend themselves or fight back. Most ofthe 4,000 Scots who died at Bannockburn died in this part of the battle. However, Robert the Bruce was ready forthis, and he called for his cavalry, (his soldiers on horseback). The horses were too quick for the bowmen, and theScots knights chased them from the battlefield.The English knights now advanced. But Robert the Bruce had ordered the Scots to put sharp sticks in front of theirsoldiers, and to dig holes in the ground for the English cavalry to fall into. The first line of English knights wasdefeated, and the second line of English knights came into the battle. They were discouraged by what happenedto the first line and they did not fight very well.At this time many people in the area knew that a great battle was being fought, and when they heard that theScots army was winning, they came to watch the battle. The English soldiers saw them appear on the top of anearby hill, and they thought that they were another Scottish army arriving. The English were terrified that theywould be caught between two Scots armies and they ran away. Now the Scots cavalry returned to the battle andthe horsemen killed many English soldiers as they ran away.After this defeat, the English army tried many more times to conquer Scotland, but they never really succeeded.Each time they were defeated by the high Scottish mountains, the bravery of the Scots soldiers, and because theyhad also to fight wars in other countries, such as France and Holland. Finally in 1707 Scotland joined with Englandas an equal partner to form the United Kingdom.
