Nicholas was born around AD 270 in

Patara,Lycia,Asia Minor,to Christianparents.As he grew, he flourishedphysically,mentally and spiritually.

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas,who was born during the third century in the villageof Patara. At the time the area was Greek and is

now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthyparents, who raised him to be a devout Christian,died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young.

Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own andgive the money to the poor," Nicholas used hiswhole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, andthe suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God

and was made Bishop of Myra while still a youngman. Bishop Nicholas became known throughoutthe land for his generosity to the those in need, hislove for children, and his concern for sailors and

ships.

In the Romanian traditions the SaintNicholas has foreign powers of

his hierarchical status: appears on a whitehorse, alluding to the first snow thatfalls in early winter, keeps the sun who is

trying to sneak past him tothe realms of the north to leave theworld without light and heat

the sailors, defendssoldiers in times ofwar, so that he isinvoked during

battles

But older is the tradition to punish

disobedient children with a rod left in theirshoes in the night of 5 / 6 December. Asa saint, Saint Nicholas was generouswith punishments than with rewards .According to Christian tradition,he punished those who deviate from theright faith by hitting them with the rod over

the hand.

On the night of December 5, childrenpolish their shoes carefully , which sits atthe door, waiting for St. Nicholas. Usuallyhe comes with candy and all sort of toys.

Children will find treats of small gifts, fruitor nuts, and special Nicholas candies and

cookies. St. Nicholas gifts are meant to beshared, not hoarded for oneself.

Nicholas became so popular because hewas a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. His

life clearly reflected the way each one ofus is called to show Gods love to

others,especially thosein need.
