INTRODUCERE

INTRODUCTION

The well-known French mathematician Pierre Fermat (1601-1665) formulated in 1637

the so-called „the last or the great Fermat theorem”, stating that:

The equation xn + yn = zn, in which n is any whole number, higher than 2, does not

have solution in x, y, z, others than those in which the unknown is 0.

14

Page 15: marea teorema

Over three centuries, mathematicians like Legendre, Euler, Lame, Cauchy, Kummer,

Mirimanoff and others, tried hard to confirm the theorem, yet it could not be demonstrated

except for particular index.

In 1995, the English mathematician Andrew Wiles demonstrated Fermat’s great

theorem on the basis of checking a conjecture of 1950 and using mathematical techniques

developed in the last decade, some of them being invented by the author himself.

A. Wiles’ demonstration of the great theorem is not the same with Fermat’s

demonstration. The demonstration must be done with the means available at that time, not

using a superior instrument.

That is why the following elementary demonstration should not amaze anyone, as it is

not but the one Fermat thought of.

One who would read through the following demonstration (as it was thought by its

author) would recognize the big truth caught by Fermat on the basis of Diofante’s

„Arithmetic”: „I discovered a demonstration truly remarcable of this statement, but this verge

is too small to cover”.

I. THE GOLDEN SECTION AND PITAGORA’S THEOREM

1.1. The golden section and Van der Eycke’s theorem

Being given the variation graphs, in

quadrant I, of the trigonometric function

and (figure 1).

15

Page 16: marea teorema

Identify the coordinates of point M, of intersection (namely, values of a and of angle

α, in degrees).

In order to calculate the coordinates of point M, the following equation must be

solved: .

Fig. 1.

The solution for this equation concurs with the theorem of Van der Eycke, with the

following content:

If from the B extremity of the AB diameter we draw a tangent BD and from the

other extremity A we draw a straight line AD that crosses the circle and the tangent so

as side BD that crosses the tangent to be equal with AC (figure 2), it will value the

fourth part of the circle.

(The theorem shows the approximate value)

If AC = BD then:

After little modifications, the equation becomes:

If considered a unit element, the segments corresponding to the golden sections can

be drawn using a plain ruler and a pair of compasses.

I.3. Being given the triangle ABC (figure 2), where:

AB = 1 (a random unit)

(resulted from the theorem of Pitagora)

Triangle ABD (figure 2) shows Van der Eycke’s idea, where .

a) Considering side AB of triangle ABC, with the angle it successively gets

the values 1; ; ; ; ; ; …

It results the values of the other two sides AC and BC, according to table 1, titled

Triangle ABC being rectangular, Pitagora’s theorem becomes:

reversal of the sides), gets successively the values:

III. CONCLUSIONS

The sides of triangle ABC, that lead to the golden section are golden segments that

represent irrational numbers.

The sides, according to tables 1 and 2, justify Pitagora’s theorem that lead to the big

theorem of Fermat, whome justifies for n ≥ 3 (including 0, 1, 2) and even decimal numbers,

positive or negative.

I propose this triangle be called „Pierre Fermat’s golden triangle”.

Solving „the big theorem” has a direct relationship with solving the equations with

integer numbers and with Fibonacci’s numbers, that Fermat gave special interest.

I suppose, considering the above, that Fermat knew very well the solutions of

equations such as: , (that can be demonstrated on a little sheet of paper), and left to

his fellows the mathematical „joke” without the key, that has been lasting for centuries.

I consider that the „geometry of the irrational numbers” represented by the alphabet

in tables 1 and 2, and the golden section, starts to say many truths, still not demonstrated.
