Project Meetings

The project team from Rebricea School was forced to admit that human beeing is only a part of the nature , not the Nature Lord. Our first project meeting in Northern Ireland and Wales , so expected by everyone , stopped in Bucharest. That's because a volcano's eruption in Ireland and the ashe cloud didn't allow the flights. Defeated and sad Rebricea team went back home. Only the Greek team succeded to get in Wales where they had a wonderful and succesful meeting. But nothing is compared is with our all presence , together , to share good practice and ask advices and help in their problems, and , of course , ,, the more we are together , the merry we can be” A new meeting was established for Mach 2011. And the project goes on.... How the volcanos affect the enviroment? Frightened and impressive , the volcanos have both positive and negativ effects . But is not an equal ballance. The soils generated by volcano's eruption are very fertile and that's the reason there are so many localities around volcanos , even towns. The benefit is more important that the fear and people hope it will be not a volcano eruption. The negative effects are more important: a lot of people die a lot of things are destroyed , the atmosphere is polluted , transporting is disturbed and there are many economical damages. The climate is changed ; the ashe stop the beams and the climate is colder for a while.

We can't win always the Nature....

Murariu Aurelia– Adela, Prof. Voinescu Ioan, educ. Mihalache Anişoara.

Vizita în Grecia a avut următorul program: Duminică 17 octombrie –întâlnire cu echipele de la şcolile partenere ( Palaio Faliro -Grecia, Irlanda de Nord, Wales) Luni 18 Octombrie –Vizită la Şcoala partenerilor din Grecia, vizită la Muzeul Naval Marţi 19 Octombrie –Vizită la Sol Energy; prezentarea activităţilor la Şcoala partenerilor din Grecia Miercuri 20 Octombrie —Prezentarea Canalului Corint. Mycene şi Nafplion Joi 21 Octombrie— Acropole Atena;

Visit in school Palaio Faliro To visit a Greek school was an exiting experience. A lot of colours on the walls , a lot of education materials , everything is very clean and tidy. It’s a friendly school and teachers , and pupils are nice and very kind. Romanian team was happy to find Romanian children in a greek school , Romanian children which speak Romanian and are proud because they’re Romanian.

Greek folk show A nice English presentation of the history of Palaio Faliro School and then a greek folk show / music and dance. You have to hear ,, Thalassa’’ and see the ,,Spyra dance” for understand what the Greek soul means. And if the childrend show you Greek soul everything become more moving.

School presentations Everybody was very excited for the school and project presentation, but Romanian team was the most excited of all. Host School opened the show with a short history of Palaio Faliro School and the pupils helped Panos with that. Their activities were focused by Sol Energy .

Ne-au prezentat mape şi fotografii c u a c t i v i t ă ţ i frumoase.

It’s a national concern for that and they learn to use this natural advantage: SUN. The PowerPoint presentation was a succesful – Greek will be ever our teachers. The N. Ireland presentation was very good structureted , all the team colaborated and show us their good practice and work. The activities was focused on Biodiversity , water and school grounds. They showed us files and photos with nice activities.

A lovely presentation of Welsh team. The Power Point presentation was realiyed with pupils’help , not only Sion but the children presented also the project activities. It was also a Muppets show where the toys fought with garbage and waste. It’s true that Welsh are a very talented people. Romanian team tried to present the country and the district /vilage , the school also. All the activities was presented in PowerPoint , but the partners had also files

with photos and explanations about activities. We were very proud for our Green News Bulletin and Panos appreciated our efforts for make a blog. What was nice and moving : our children’s Romanian and English soung and the toys and decorations made by themsolves and send to our parteners. Romanian presentation was focused on School Grounds , Biodiversity and Waste. Transporting When we speak about Greeks , we speak about sailing. That’s the reason for the children from Palaio Faliro School offred us little paper boats. Sea transporting is very important in Greece . A lot of environmental questions are Mediteraneean Sea waters or not? We thought to all these environmental problems but we admired also the

Navy Museum with the ,,star ship” Livorno and compared it with a fairy reply of an ancient trireme. But transporting in Greece doesn’t mean only boats , only sailing . a touristic country like Greece has a very busy traffic –cars , buses , trams, motocycles , trains or planes. Cars and motocycles are everywhere in the towns and their CO2 emisions are very important for environment .The children’s drawings showed that and we saw it also down the street. A real jewellery was Corint Channel . How is it posible that the beauty and benefit to be together in human creation?

Autorul –Nikos Vitantzakis- a dat autografe .

The Sol Energy Greece means sun and sky and Greek people learnt how to use the Sun Power. A visit to the Sol Energy Station in Palaio Faliro was an exciting experience ,knowledge and good practice mixed together. Everyone received a very interesting book about how to teach children for quality in primary school education , how to use Energy , the Sol Energy especialy the author - Nikos Vitantzakis- offered also his autograph. Two young and very talented inventors presented us an interesting and economical system , based an Sol Energy , very useful for institutions (schools , hotels etc). Both Romanian and British teams thought if they have enough sun for this wonderful,,Sol mashine” .

Isidora Donciu– clasa a III-a

Rainwater, is beneficial for the garden? Rainwater can be used for irrigation of garden in drought. The harvest and storage of rainwater is an economic solution which protects the environment in the same time, recommended especially for areas outside the cities – and that’s because the polluted air from the cities passes easily in the rain drops and modifying the water composition.

1.The qualities of rainwater. Usually, the rainwater is very clean and doesn’t contain salts so it can be used with success for irrigating the plants for inside and out doors as well. More than that, if it is kept in tanks in the dark, the rainwater keeps its qualities for many years. The green algae are formed in the sun light, which can affect the qualities of rain water.

2.How is it harvested? One of the most effective methods for collecting rainwater is to set the barrels to drain the casings filters to collect the water from the roofs. But, the disadvantage is the collected water that contains dirt from the roof such as: Feathers, Dried leaves, etc. Another solution is to install the special tanks into the soil to collect the water. Placed under the soil level, these tanks are very durable and very easy to use.

3.Other uses are The rainwater is used from in the old times for washing clothes. The rainwater is very clean so it doesn’t need any softening. Most substances enter in detergents compositions and helps softening – so when we use rainwater for washing clothes, we are going to use a very small quantity of detergent. Rainwater is used in the kitchen for washing the dishes. Also, the stored rainwater can be used as well as bathing.

Power The electricity brought to modernizing the whole planetary economy. Man has invested time and money in order to improve the production and the transporting networks of the electric power. Nobody had thought yet that it will reach such an exaggerated consumption of electric power which harms the surrounding environment. Thus organizations were built which fight for the environment’s protection. Our school is also involved in this protecting process, participating at the project called “Mind over Matter”. Our school’s pupils have decided to consume less electric power. We started by monitoring the consumption, we used computers for the essential, we used natural light in sunny days, we posted posters on the classrooms doors through which we were asking our colleagues to reduce the consumption of power: both electric and heating power. We established certain weeks of full reduction of the power consumption (monitoring the electric and heating power through placing thermometers in every classroom). The next step in the ongoing of our

projects, was, making a “Power Guard”. The pupils from the guard have the obligation to keep the school’s doors closed in order to maintain the heat and to turn off the lights in the school’s hallways and classes when needed. The guard’s tasks are displayed in visible place. After the developing of those activities in school we became more responsible, more active in the action of reducing of the power consumption. With wisdom we can transform power into an ally not an enemy of the surrounding environment.

Ana Aghiorghiesei– clasa a IV-a

Birds Autumn migration With the arrival of the cold days, birds find food harder. It’s the signal of the great travel southwards: the migration begins. Birds search for places with more food, with a more mild climate and longer days. The destinations of the birds from Romania are Africa and Australia. The cooler the winter is in a region, the biggest the percentage of migrating birds . This travel, well prepared by the birds, becomes a true adventure because of the great distance they have to traverse and alos because of the weather’s whims. When the time of migration comes the birds must be in top shape. That’s why, in the summer they eat a lot and store fat as “fuel” for the long journey. Some birds even double their weigh! Also, their muscles enlarge and new feathers grow on their wings and tails. A lot of birds die on the way from exhaustion, others get lost on the route, some are killed by the birds of prey or by the hungry animals which lurk on land, when the birds rest. In those conditions only the strong ones arrive at destination. The routes are chosen carefully. The birds gather on “crossings”, where shores are closer, trying to avoid the danger of a long jouney over the water, when they won’t be able to feed nor rest. The swallow, nightingale and the cuckoo avoid the regions with large water surfaces. When they don’t have a choice, they choose the route with islands, where they can rest and find food. Instead, ducks and wild geese, swans, storks avoid land surfaces, where the hungry fox lurks.

The speed with which birds fly differ from a specie to another but is, generally, between 40-70 km/ ph. The voyage is made both day and night. Pelicans, swallows and ravishers fly during the day; the night is the time of the aquatic birds, the cuckoos. The darkness offers them protection against the ravishers. During the day they rest and search for food in order to recover their consumed energy. Generally, the official trip is made in large groups, which offer more protection. Birds that fly higher are favored by the airflows, so that they can cross hundreds of kilometers in just a couple of days. Pelicans, ducks and geese- generally fly in a flock one after another, but in an open V. They flap their wings slowly and magnificently: flap, flap, flap, gliding flying. Every bird adjusts its moves in accordance with the bird in its front: or wing flapping at the same time, or on turns. Frequently the wings moves seem to look like the waves of the water. Romania has a diverse geographical position having also landforms which are not preferred by the birds, in their way southwards or northwards. Such an obstacle is the Carpathians. That’s why, Dobrogea reunites most of

the migration routes, as mountains from this zone are small heighted. In autumn and spring, in Dobrogea, Danube Delta, Braila’s Island and Snakes Island there are large crowds of birds. The experiments done by the experts have shown that birds are sensitive to the magnetic field of the Earth and are even “programmed” for this journey. It’s like they have a compass, they can fly in a constant direction with well defined orientation points. At the instincts transmitted hereditary is added the experience obtained along many migration years. When a group of mature and young birds was deviated from the route with over 4.000 km, the mature ones, with previous flying experiences, have discovered fast the correct direction towards which they had to fly, while the younger birds, being at their first flight, needed more time and had small deviations from the route. The orientation instinct is eased in eye sight, hearing, the perceiving of the airflows and the humidity. Interesting is that when the weather conditions are not favorable for the migration, the birds will wait for them to change, excepting the moments when the birds are already surprised in flight. The birds feet don’t touch only one of the electrical wires. Their body is submitted to a tension which could touch hundreds of thousands of volts. But the electric power doesn’t passes through it as long as they touch one wire. They could be electrified just in case the electrical power passes through the body from a conductor (wire) to another one. Or, the birds come in contact with one electrical wire with the air which is a good conductor of electricity. The electricians base on thisprinciple when they repair the high-voltage wires without interrupting the power. When the birds touch accidentally the other wire with one of the wings a cage is produced: the electrical power will pass from a wire to another through its body. In this case, the little birds will be electrified, phenomenon which is, unfortunately, really rare! Wild geese own the record of flight in highs through the birds of passage (8.000 km). Almost half of the total of birds of the Delta are migratory birds, 132 species leave the Danube Delta and head for warm zones. The cuckoo passes the Equator to Africa or Australia alone, and not in flocks like the other migratory birds. In spring the birds of passage arrive from the warm countries!

MAY– 2010 APRIL

22 April 2010 Then the pupils from I-IV Grades were divided in groups. There were established two routes as part of the village where they went accompanied by their teacher. They have been dis-tributed gloves and garbage bags. The groups have been made to collect the wastes selectively: bottles, plastic, paper, metal. The Earth must be maintained clean, not suffocated by all kind of wastes. The children gave every villager an ecology lesson, causing them to be more careful with the wastes that are thrown every-

where.         12th May 2010 “Every drop counts!”- day of maximum reduction of water consumption Pupils from lower classes have realized drawings on the theme of water accumulation. They used colored crayons and did not use watercolors for reducing the water consump-tion. The gymnasium pupils watered the flowers which were planted (seeded) in this spring into the school’s garden or in flower pots with rain water collected and kept for this pur-pose. The most wonderful drawings will be exposed accom-panied by rules regarding the reduction of the water con-sumption, so that all the pupils will assimilate these rules and apply them.

21st May 2010 “The environment where my favorite animal lives” - drawing contest In the 21st May the pupils from the whole school participated at a drawing contest where they will have to realize drawings on sheets (drawing tablet sheets) A3 with his favorite animal in its natural habitat for mark-ing the day of 22nd May “The World Wide Day of Pre-serving the Biological Diversities”. To each class has been distributed boxes with colored crayons, markers, wax crayons, the theme was communicated to them and they have been urged to let their imagination free. At the end, a committee made out of teachers and pupils have selected more drawings. From those, two drawings were selected and sent at the national contest by the Minister of Medium and Forests, thus punctuating the fact that year 2010 has been declared the “Year of Biodiversity”.

“Reduce, recycle, reuse” - collecting and delivering wastes action Once with the start of the contest “School for a green future”, has started the action of paper wastes collecting. One day a week has been established when pupils from school brought the collected wastes which they stored it into the school’s ware-house. First they have been explained the neces-sity of collecting the paper putting great accent on the rational use of paper. Actually May was declared the month of maxim use of paper when in school were given more oral estimates than written, it was printed on both sides of paper (as a habit that maintained and will be perpetuated in school, the Plastic Arts classes were done at computers, the pupils drawn beautiful

drawings on computers) . Accumulating paper, we accumulate wood, saving from cutting a lot of trees. The paper collected this way we will deliver it to Vaslui at a collecting center. 25th September 2010 - Activity of collecting wastes in the school ground and from the streets in the Re-bricea locality For marking the cleaning day the Rebricea School’s pupils along with a representative of World Vision Organization went on dif-ferent streets of the village to collect wastes. They were endowed with gloves and garbage bags. On the sacks they wrote on a pa-per what they will gather in every sack for elective gathering of the waste. There were sacks in which there were gathered: pa-per , plastic, household waste, glass, metal. Pupils from primary classes decided to gather first the wastes from the school ground then they continued with the sport field, the riverbed that passes through the locality and one of the village’s streets. They gathered the waste selectively The sacks with the selected wastes were stored first of all into the bins next to the school then the other sacks were left at the bins from the end of the village.

26th of September- Hiking around Rebricea commune The weather was adequate for taking a walk in the commune’s orchard. The pupils have admired the landscape, they have observed the villages from the environs establishing the points of the compass and the locality’s neighbors. The pathway till the orchard and the tiredness opened the children’s appetite which sat on the grass and ate the parcels taken from the knapsack. The hiking’s attraction was the discovery of a lizard. In the orchard they have discovered blackberries, apples and sloes. They have also discovered a fox’s den and bird’s nests.

15th of October 2010 The weather started to cool that’s why today we brought flower pots for some flowers planted in the school’s garden. These flowers named by us Canna Indica have to be kept in the winter at a warm place in order not to freeze or decay. A part of the children brought flower pots but more were from the previous year. They washed the flower pots, made holes in the new ones, put the soil and then the flowers. They carried them into the classrooms dividing them by twos in each class. The flowers were taken from the garden and replaced into flower pots. The flower pots were taken into the class and on the school’s hallway.

October 2010- The school’s garden care activity Once with the coming of autumn the pupils came to school and found the school’s garden occupied by wild plants. Thus they have decided to go and weed a part of these wild plants but taking care not to pull out the flowers. They pulled out the dried flowers which were carried in a special place. The pupils from grades I-IV along with the teachers and form masters participated. October- November 2010- Building and placing bird houses Starting with October the teachers proposed the pupils to ask their parents to build some more bird houses.

Thus the pupils began to bring one after other a house each being unique. A pupil from the 4th Grade built alone the house being very appreciated by his classmates and the teacher. The houses were built from different materials left from constructions: board, parquet, tin plate, linoleum. The houses will be placed in every tree in the school’s court so that the birds feel protected here as in their natural homes. The pupils were excited because in spring they saw that some birds laid eggs into the houses built by them. When the houses were placed food was also put for the birds into pots made out of bottles.

The next step in the ongoing of our projects, was, making a “Power Guard”.
